An interesting soulslike that delivers unique combat mechanics which result in fun gameplay encounters. I am not crazy about the story but some of the characters were HOT.

On the final stage at this point and I'm seriously considering to platinum this game. I see a lot of hate directed at the combat and I think I understand why. Mainly the rolling which feels hallow even if you're fat rolling it doesn't feel remotely responsive and I hated that at first and I still don't like it. Utilizing blood codes and inheriting gifts is key. Like dark souls it's fitting to call this anime souls.

I was excited to finally play Code Vein in preparation for Code Vein 2, and I genuinely wish I hadn’t. This game completely killed my interest in the sequel. I’m left wondering how it even earned **** game isn’t broken in any single catastrophic way—it’s worse than that. It feels like it was never properly finished. Every part of it screams a lack of polish, from the writing and character design to the level layouts and combat **** character presentation is especially bad. Female characters are designed in a way that feels aggressively pandering and ridiculous. Armor constantly clips through models, not just on the player character but on NPCs as well. It makes the entire experience feel sloppy and unprofessional before you’ve even started engaging with the systems Code Vein has to **** writing only makes that worse. The story tries to be deep, emotional, and dramatic, but it’s delivered in a convoluted, awkward “bad anime” style that never lands. Characters are wildly unlikable and cringey, yet the game keeps forcing big emotional moments that feel completely undeserved, making them painful to sit through rather than moving or engaging. That lack of subtlety carries over into the presentation as well. The music is hit-or-miss: sometimes the game triggers more dramatic themes during tougher encounters or on low HP, which is a nice idea, but much of the soundtrack clashes with what’s happening on screen. There’s even a cinematic combat sequence set to loud rock music that’s so poorly choreographed it’s almost embarrassing.Combat itself feels floaty and awkward. One genuinely interesting mechanic is the “focus meter,” which lets you launch enemies into the air and finish them with cinematic attacks—that part actually works and feels satisfying, even if it looks ridiculous on huge enemies. The Blood Code system, which is meant to define your build, ends up undermining itself because you can freely cherry-pick abilities across all classes, forming an overpowered “uber” class. Instead of meaningful trade-offs, it turns into a grab bag of BIS skills, which removes any real sense of identity or commitment. That lack of meaningful design shows most clearly in how the game handles difficulty. As a Soulslike, Code Vein completely misses the point. Early on, challenge comes almost entirely from throwing large numbers of functionally identical enemies at you while giving you very weak, limited, and very slow healing. Exploration feels punishing because chip damage adds up quickly, yet boss fights are trivialized by your AI companion, who deals huge damage and can even revive you if you die. If you actually want any tension or risk, you have to dismiss the companion manually—but then the game forces them back into every story scene anyway, and when they’re in your party they come with constant dialogue that you can only partially mute. It creates a bizarre situation where the game both refuses to commit to being accessible and refuses to commit to being challenging.Camera and lock-on behavior make things even worse. Lock-on often feels like a death sentence in tight spaces, hit detection is inconsistent, and parrying is so unreliable that you’re almost always better off dodging and building focus for air juggles instead. When fights do go poorly, it rarely feels like you were outplayed—it feels like the systems simply didn’t cooperate or were cheap.Exploration doesn’t help. Levels are huge, maze-like, and visually repetitive, making it extremely hard to get your bearings or remember where you’ve been; the map can only do so much to help you navigate. Souls games usually use strong landmarks and environmental storytelling to guide players, but Code Vein does neither. Instead of letting the world speak for itself, it dumps awkward exposition on you constantly, hammering home a story that’s already poorly written. From a technical standpoint, the game didn’t crash for me, but that’s about the highest praise I can give it. Armor clipping, animation issues, and awkward transitions are everywhere, reinforcing the feeling that this game was never properly finished or **** the end, there are countless games that do everything Code Vein tries to do—combat, builds, exploration, atmosphere, storytelling—far better. This is one of the most frustrating and miserable gaming experiences I’ve had in recent memory, and it completely killed my hype for Code Vein 2. I genuinely do not understand how this game has fans, and I can’t see what people find compelling about it when so many better alternatives **** not waste your time or your money.

This was my first souls games, and i think the only reviews that should matter are the ones that never get compared to other games. Many criticize the game saying "Its just Dark Souls but anime and gooner" but in my opinión this games was beautiful in gameplay, graphics and maybe story not the most logical but keeps amazing and emotive. Those called "souls genre fans" for sure just watch tiktok editsof their games and then criticize a game that is just perfection for other people.

Sadly it is just a bad copy of Fromsoft's formula. It's all a generic anime style world without a soul. The combat is a bit clunky and I don't like the hit feedback at all. The runbacks/checkpoints are insanely annoying without a reason.

Overall, a good Souls game that lacks some polish. I liked the story, characters, customization and the ability to bring a companion with you if you want. While the level design is nothing special, I enjoyed unlocking all of the sections of the maps. Stamina drains way too fast, though, and healing takes way too long. When you need to heal during a boss fight, it feels almost impossible because it is so slow and the boss constantly targets you and not your partner. Otherwise, the game is much better than the scores it got. I feel like people who give this game low scores did so because they are not good at the game. Maybe they should not play Souls games?

There are games that are not worth your money. And then there are games the developers should pay you back for losing your precious lifetime on them because they are so bad. Code Vein is one of the latter. If not the one. I feel bad i can only give zero points because this rubbish is such a BS it would deserve negative points. I dont know what you have to have in your brain to deliver such a desaster. The story and design might draw your interesst if you are a 12 year old girl. 14 not so much anymore. Technically it is utter trash. How about employing some real developers instead of some script kiddies who dont even know how to handle game engines where you only have to click some buttons?! Honestly i spent around 20 hours with this crap. I tried really hard. I played most of all the soulslike games there are. This one is such a embaressment for the genre. Stay away from Code Pain. Dont support such cheap developers!

FINAL SCORE: 8.6 / 10 — RESONANT INTRODUCTIONCode Vein stands as a bold and stylistically distinct entry in the souls-like genre. Developed with clear inspiration from titles like Bloodborne and Dark Souls, it nevertheless carves out a powerful identity of its own—not through flawless execution, but through daring philosophical ambition, a strong character-driven narrative, and a striking aesthetic vision. ️ THE HAND – GAMEPLAY & INTERACTIVITY (7.8/10)A deep and customizable system weighed down by friction and **** game offers a robust action-RPG foundation. Combat controls feel responsive, and the weapon variety meaningfully impacts playstyle. The class and skill system is a particular standout—flexible, non-permanent, and encouraging deep experimentation. Progression is well-paced, with optional areas that feel rewarding rather than obligatory. However, the experience is marred by significant flaws. Punishing animation locks and poorly-telegraphed enemy attacks make combat feel sluggish and at times unfair. Enemy HP bloat, especially in solo play, turns encounters into wars of attrition. The companion AI, while a welcome accessibility option, drastically trivializes many challenges, creating a jarring imbalance between solo and assisted play. THE HEART – NARRATIVE & PROGRESSION (8.5/10)A compelling, character-focused story with emotional **** narrative takes a refreshingly character-centric approach. The amnesiac "Revenant" premise effectively hooks the player into uncovering the pasts of a well-realized cast. The story builds momentum beautifully, balancing plot twists and emotional moments on its way to a satisfying final act. The memory fragment system is a clever, mechanics-integrated method of delivering lore that avoids simply copying the "item description" style of its inspirations. Multiple endings add meaningful replayability, and the consistent tragic, bittersweet mood is enhanced by superb Japanese voice acting and a poignant score. THE MIND – PHILOSOPHY & THEMATIC RESONANCE (9.5/10)A flawlessly executed and courageous thematic core. This is where Code Vein truly excels. On the surface, it explores what it means to retain one's humanity while becoming a "monster." Beneath that lies a powerful, nuanced, and radical critique of oppressive systems. The game presents a world where the protagonists champion community, mutual aid, and revolutionary empathy over vengeance and individualism as the means to survive a hellish existence. It offers a profoundly anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist message, even advocating for the abolition of the state, all without being preachy. It handles these complex ideas with remarkable fairness, acknowledging the temptation of vengeance while framing empathy as the more difficult and revolutionary path. ️ THE EYE – ARTISTIC VISION & ATMOSPHERE (8.8/10)A bold and cohesive aesthetic **** game's "Gothic Industrial" style—a fusion of Victorian, anime, and Mad Max influences—is unique and full of personality. Character and boss designs are distinct and memorable. The soundtrack is masterful, using ambient dread for exploration and soaring, hyped-orchestral themes for bosses. The atmosphere is consistently oppressive and isolating, achieved not through typical horror imagery but through masterful use of apocalyptic skylines and lighting. Its only notable shortcoming is a lack of environmental variety, with a heavy reliance on caverns and ruined cities. CONCLUSION Code Vein is not a perfect game. Its gameplay lacks the polished, balanced feel of its inspirations, and its environments can grow repetitive. Yet, it triumphs through sheer ambition and heart. It is a game that dares to be intellectually substantial, wrapping a radical political statement in a tragic, character-driven tale, all presented through a confident and unique artistic lens. It is a deeply resonant experience whose strengths easily overshadow its flaws, securing its place as a memorable and important title for those seeking more from the genre than just challenging combat.

I played 20 hours and almost 90 percent of the game. but I can't even number a good thing in that game instead hot spring .Trash and reused level design. Trash Parry system. Trash poise and stability mechanics. Trash NPC and enemy AI. Trash combat and enemy and also weapon mechanisms.trash and unbalanced boss fights with unlogical attacks like IN THE MIDDLE OF ENEMY CAMBO ATTACK HE PREFORM A 2 SECOND DELAY BETWEEN 4 AND 5 CAMBO. It's absolutely not a souls like. I played DS trilogy, elden ring, bloodborne and also sekiro but code vein didnt got a single good phenomenon from souls, like good combat and hitbox or perfect lore. All mid enemies in code vein can deal you the damage that you must heal 2 times per a light hit. It's not about armor and dodging or level up. With level 110 and a Zweihander with good levels heal item and skilled dodge this game still have lots of problems that dont let you just finish the **** A SINGLE GOOD BOSS OR ENEMY OR COMBAT OR MECHANISM.

Surprising coming from Bandai, the combat doesnt feel good, it lacks impact, heavy strikes feels like you are are hitting the enemies with a towel, the developers misunderstood the very core of what makes Dark souls souls combat so satisfying, they thought clumsiness was the signature trait of DS, Bosses are generic, unmemorable and their mechanics are annoying, most of them are just damage sponges that spam AoF attacks, apart from the combat the endings are tied to to a tedious collecting of worthless "memory fragments" in every level, it you miss one of them , too bad you wont be able to fight the final boss and you will get a bad ending-

Anime souls game, with little more story to it. For hardcore players solo is a real challenge, with comapanion it makes this walkthrough much easier. Compared to other souls games, this game offers different combat system with skills and variety of preset builds. I loved every second of this game.

Code vein is soul-like game, but it's both difficult and easy at some points. The gameplay is fine, story is not something very special, it is like average shonen, romance anime but i still enjoy it. The music is way too good

Highly underrated game, it's basically anime dark souls without the hype. i skipped most cutscenes halfway into the game. the gameplay alone is worth it, but the story seems decent. the combat system is surprisingly complex and is automatically a duo-journey scheme. the game eases you into difficulty with the more difficult parts appearing near mid-game and notably appearing at endgame. there is a ton of potential here in the formula. the old mechanics really show in the gameplay but it could rightfully be called an unofficial souls game just for how it does things uniquely in its own way.

Writing this review on the occasion of my 3rd time trying to get into Code Vein and being disappointed again. Some interesting ideas, but unfortunately it all falls flat compared to any good souls like or action game. I wanted to like it, but no dice. Combat has no weight whatsoever. No noise, no feedback, no bounce off of weapons or visual cues. Enemies mostly don't react to your swings. There were many times I didn't even know I was getting hit because of the lack of weight. But once you're hit, you're screwed, as you're often stunlocked. No ability to animation cancel as far as I can tell. Weapon variety is terrible. Decent selection of abilities, but the visual flair for spells and such is surprisingly disappointing and subdued for an anime game. The whole "anime vampire" premise starts off interesting but goes nowhere. Environments and enemies are boring and repetitive. Story is blah. Typical anime tropes and poor dialogue, including of course female characters wearing almost nothing. Not a terrible game, but save yourself some time: go play Elden Ring or Lies of P or Nioh or Lords of the Fallen or anything else.

I loved the Blood Codes and vestiges concept, and the build versatility that come with it But the general art style looks like a cellphone game The weapons system is kinda strange, they tried to copy dark souls 1 formula for it, but that resulted in me using the same f*cking hammer on my STR build

I had an urge to play a Souls game as well recently, so I decided to give Code Vein a try. Code Vein is basically "Anime Dark Souls", but not from the same developer team; it's just heavily inspired by Dark Souls. Its story, however, is not delivered via environmental storytelling like in the Dark Souls games, but proper cutscenes and dialogue. It's an interesting decision but many frequent cutscenes in games like these get annoying after a bit because they bring the gameplay to a halt. As for the gameplay though, it's actually fun; typical awkward Souls camera aside, the combat system feels fluid, the build variety is good and some unique mechanics are cool. Also, the companion system is a great addition in my opinion. The extraordinary fashion and visuals in Code Vein remind me much more of Bloodborne than Dark Souls, but paired with an "Anime" aesthetic. Also, the story, the world design and many of its ideas lean closer to Bloodborne as well, and that's a wonderful thing. The biggest highlight of the game for me, however, is the character creation and customization; it's honestly fantastic, better than in any Souls game I've played so far, including FromSoftware's Souls games. With that being said though, the level design is hit or miss; the shortcuts and the interconnected levels are done well, but the environments are usually bland and repetitive, and the layouts are confusing most of the time. Also, the bosses are mostly underwhelming and weak. Pros: + Enjoyable gameplay + Build diversity + Awesome fashion + Nice visuals + Amazing character customization Cons: - Cutscenes - Clunky camera - Inconsistent level design - Disappointing bosses Narrative: ?/10 Gameplay: 7/10 Content: 7/10 Characters: ?/10 Music: 6/10 Art Style: 7/10 Final Rating: 7/10 - Good - Code Vein is indeed "Anime Dark Souls" and a surprisingly good "Soulslike" game, but it's still a much inferior game to FromSoftware's legendary progenitor series. Do I recommend it?: If you are a fan of FromSoftware's Souls games, I'd highly recommend it but at low price. Otherwise, just play any of FromSoftware's recent Souls games first.

While not a perfect Souls-Like game, Code Vein has its own charm that makes it one of the better games that tries to replicate the magic of Dark Souls. The stylized graphics will help ensure it ages well, the soundtrack is top notch, the gameplay is easy to learn, but difficult to master. The world is interesting, and your team of characters are both competent, and interesting. The only knocks I have are that the game can get a bit too repetitive, and there are some performance issues every so often.

A mediocre attempt to recreate a soulslike experience. Don't get me wrong, this game is solid, it's quite easy and relaxing, but it feels like it doesn't really know what makes the souls games so special, the amount of cutscenes and the emphasis on the story doesn't really fit for this genre, in a way, its a flawed soulslike game, but on its own, it's actually surprisingly enjoyable for the most part. The gameplay is good and the exploration is pretty fun, the world looks very beautiful, I like the art-style, the characters look cool and the graphics are pretty nice, most areas look great, the destroyed city with the spikes coming out of the earth, the crystalline cathedral of the sacred blood, the corrupted dark caves, and many more. The character customization is fantastic, there are many options to choose from, even though there's a lack of clothing options, since your character is going to wear an armor and a mask most of the time, I do appreciate the amount of different customization options, I just really like creating my own character, and the game did satisfy me on that part. As for the progression system, oh well it's honestly so damn confusing, I still don't understand how it works, it doesn't make any sense and most abilities are useless, I ended up leveling up all the time and using a strenght build with a greatsword, didn't really bother with the Blood Codes, and I still decimated everything, even in the endgame areas. The boss fights are actually very simple, no challenge whatsoever, I do like the fact that you can have a sidekick but it makes the game significantly easier, which isn't really a complaint but I wish the boss fights had more variety and a bigger moveset, to balance it out, but unfortunately that's not the case at all. Also, it's worth to mention that the hitboxes are terrible, enemies attack in front of them and if you are behind them, chances are you still get hit, even if you are about to attack, because the frames are broken, it's very inconsistent and random. Lastly, the level design is very boring, most areas are okay, but some of them suffer from terrible and obnoxious platforming, and monotonous layout, they're not connected well, and they feel copy-pasted. I know, I complained a lot, but at the end of the day, this is still an enjoyable game even with all its flaws. It's worth trying out but don't expect anything more than just a silly unmemorable little adventure, some people might enjoy it even more than I did but it's just nothing to write home about. Final Rating: "Decent" ~ 6/10.

Code Vein is one of the most boring, bland, and uninteresting games I have ever played. The gameplay feels disconnected and the combat is simple and lifeless. The enemies and boss battles are dull and have poor telegraphing. Mechanically and story-wise this game is mediocre and underwhelming.

Unfortunately another Dark Souls Clone without having any spirit of the original Game. And it doesn't matter if you like Anime or not. We've got 1:1 all the mechanics of the DS Series, like Bonfires, Leveling-System, Weapon-Upgrades, etc. which is not a bad thing at all. Actually everything that was copied from the Master works good and without flaws... BUT the levels itself are truly AWFUL to look at AND to play. It's always an extremely narrow lane, tiny areas, Graphics from PS3-Area and the way they are build are just nonsense! It all fells like a big surreal picture without any references to how a world actually would exist. Beside those non-existing worlds, we've got stupid cities, deserts and a government building that's just so artificial nonsense, it reminds me of the games in the 90s, where Level-Design just had nothing to do with any sort of real worlds. How would anybody design and build a building like this?! Anyway, the mechanics and combat is okay, nothing special though and it saves the Game from beeing a total disaster. But still, it's so average in every way that I was just relieved when the final Boss hit the ground. And don't bother with buying the Add-On! It's basically recycled Bosses, tiny areas and a complete waste of time.

Code Vein is an action jrpg Souls like anime style. Code Vein is a great action jrpg and for what it is this has probably the best character customization in a game that I've ever seen. You can create male or female and style them how you want. The story is not something that will wow you however in the middle of the game there is a surprising connection to another game wondering if both games are connected in the same universe. Boss battles are not like Souls or Bloodborne by any stretch but still they can be challenging in their own right. You can have an NPC follow you on journey and switch them out for a strategic approach in areas. Music is your typical jrpg with a few kick butt boss themes. Weaponry plays a big role along with armor that certain types does have great benefits and Blood Memories these are most important to the style your playing. These can be upgraded by finding them and by using your soul points I highly recommend doing these cause once you have them complete you can use them as passive abilities forever. The game is fully voiced acted in English and Japanese.. the length is well over 40 hours and the game does have optional bosses and a 3 dlcs sold separately. My score is an 8 for how deep the character customization was and how fun it can be. However the game does suffer bad enemy aggressive behavior that seems unfair. Enemies can clip through the walls FPS drops is rare but it can be noticeable when close buildings. It's a great game but a few hiccups.

Generalement

To start things up, let me say that code vein is not a souls Bourne clone! But rather a new take on a formula that the souls games have used for every game single souls game. Code vein has a story and an excellent character customization to boot! Plus the whole anime feel is just perfect. I'm really enjoying code vein and hope to see a sequel in the future.

Code Vein is an action RPG that is HEAVILY influenced by the Dark Souls games, unfortunately it is a pale imitation in virtually every way. The combat is unsatisfying, the environments are dull cut and paste labyrinths and you seem to just fight the same enemy types over and over again. A few hours was all I could take of this game.

An alright game with some good combat, great bosses/enemies and alright level design. The things holding it back are its garbage story, bad and overly confusing progression system, and some of it's level design is incredibly weak. It also simply doesn't have enough unique enemy types to last its overly long completion time. This game would have been twice as good if it were half as long

Yet another Souls-like with plenty of goofy anime/JRPG cheese... A few cool mechanics do little to separate a mediocre, yet mostly solid slasher from the rest of the formulaic pack. Loose controls and repetitive action are melded to inconsistent performance and dull level design. The game is far less of an artificially-difficult chore than From's clunkathons, and at least the cringe-tastic story and characters are as comprehensible as they are annoying. Wait for a sale or save your cash for something more inspired and deserving of your time.

Good for - those that like a fun, challenging, action game with anime style. Possibly among the best looking anime games to date. Bad for- first time gamers or people who dont like anime art style and strategic games Similar games - dark souls, bloodborne Let me say as an individual who's played well over a thousand games. This is exactly another perfect example of how terrible " professional "critics are. Games like repeated CoD trash get great rating while this magnificent game gets knocked on. Now to my review, The character building is perfect, you can choose so many cosmetics. You can choose so many different armor types that tremendously impact gameplay. You can hide your armor (which actually looks great also) if you want only cosmetics. The character creation is amazing.Every character is so well designed you actually find yourself liking all of then. There is so much to do and you get an epic soundtrack as well. The story is well narrated and really thought out. You also have a chance to dive into everyones back story if you want.
