i played for like 10+ hours, it feels like you're playing skyrim in a virtual tokyo, the combat system is okay but it is limited. Then there are a ton of objectives to complete that would give you power-ups, it reminded me of playing far cry. it has a very gamey clunkey feel. story-wise, i dont really like the people tbh, they just seem super generic. its okay, its acceptable as a game but I don't feel like finishing it. For someone who really enjoys learning aspects of japanese culture, this could be good.

Monster Hunter: World9
Jun 9, 2024
the core gameplay loop is extremely fun to the point that it made me want to do side missions which i rarely do. i really enjoyed playing the game solo in the first half of the game, after a point the monsters became more complex so they were enjoyable from the skill challenge but the raw HP and time needed to kill them made it a slog, so I invited people through the SOS group gameplay of up to 4 people, that turned out to be extremely fun too, reminded me of the borderlands/last remnant type of game play. there are many janky moments which can cause lots of frustration but the positives of being in such a magical yet realistic feeling world taking down progressively bigger and badder monsters, and using their gear to get stronger, is an experience that cant be understood unless you have gotten into the loop. the story is straight-up awful but this game isnt about the story, the story is just an engine to introduce you to this world of distinct monsters with their own personalities and traits.

Remnant: From the Ashes8

this is compared to dark souls a lot but it feels more like borderlands with dark souls quality bosses and it's focus on evade mechanics. This type of game is best played with other people, in pubs or friends. Generative AI maps made campaign replays feel decent but eventually doing the same 3 areas repeatedly gets boring. You won't see every boss unless you do multiple campaign replays, which is a shame. Shooting feels very old-school but every gun is solid, i really liked the starter guns and mods. Bosses feel distinct and reasonably challenging and fun. Was worth it for $10, and makes me consider the sequel for $30 since I cant find that many online pubs to play in the first game

Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut9
Jun 4, 2024
A modern samurai game that solidly delivers a triple AAA experience (imo better than GoW ragnarok). The main character is very likable, and the mongol invader antagonists play their part well too. The plot deals with lots of questions around morality - cultural expectations, the responsibility of leadership and the clash of order vs disorder. the main story is compelling since it is very action and consequence-heavy. the side missions are boring to complete because its often filler gameplay busy-work with low consequences. specific side missions were very enjoyable, I rarely enjoy side missions but this game made me want to do them. the combat, stealth, platforming are the most fun aspects of the game, but especially the combat that makes you feel like a samurai. easily a modern masterpiece because it remembers to be fun throughout the game

Far Cry 39

im extremely surprised at the complexity of this game's story, and its very fun gameplay loop that other modern games have tried to copy but fail to do. the story is deeply philosophical and told through the gameplay and cutscenes. it makes you question things people take for granted. it tries to grapple with the deep chaos within by presenting this fantasy landscape to enact all those dark actions but letting you contemplate the implications by showing the transformation of the main character through these dark deeds. Vaas, who you meet early, is the most standout villain, because he embodies the nature of human chaos naturally with an authentic depiction of human rage and contradiction. There were some rage-inducing moments with glitches that show the game's age but the pacing of fun gameplay and intentionally well crafted story more than makes up for everything.

ME3 is very similar to ME1 and ME2 but very different. the gameplay loop is much less confusing. shooting feels the best in trilogy. weapon variety feels limited since many good guns are expensive and locked till late-game. the story feels standard and not as daring as ME2 but the expansion on the geth-turian and krogan-salarian conflict were very good. the ending was slightly confusing but I understand it and I like that there's many implications between the possibilities and that there is no standard "best ending"

Horizon Zero Dawn7

HZD has a very intriguing combat system vs the robot machines with multiple ways to take down an enemy. The game is over before you can explore the depth of combat mechanics properly. the story is a stereotypical coming-of-age story with what feels like forced/arbitrary women empowerment tropes. If you see a woman, expect them to be strong independent. if it's a man, and you are wondering whether he is deeply flawed or evil, the answer is yes, unless he is deeply loyal to the main character. I played as part of PS Plus subscription but I wouldn't pay for this directly because it is partly a long lecture of exposition and forgets to be "fun" through many assigned tasks in the game

Mass Effect 210

mass effect 2 is an improvement to the ME1 formula in almost every way. ME1 has an edge with the pacing of the story but ME2 has depth, boldness in the story, beyond most 2020+ games's willingness to push the boundaries of storytelling. the gameplay loop is easier to understand, I do miss the variety of weapons and the importance of the leveling mechanic, but spending more time on missions actually shooting is very satisfying. the settings in the level design are very diverse and fun to explore. learning about each character through their loyalty missions was a highlight beyond the gameplay.

its crazy to think this came out at 2007, the story is extremely compelling. the mechanics are somewhat janky but the guns and constant weapon/armor upgrades are fun to cycle through. it reminded me of destiny in many ways but better because it has actual substance

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order8
Apr 23, 2024
honestly the game mechanics feel very good. the combat reminds me of dark souls, the platforming puzzles are fun and enjoyable but sometimes they became painfully confusing . being lost in large confusing maps made this game somewhat painful. i really like the direction of this game and how it combines all these elements of different games but something about it feels off too, it feels a bit soulless. the plot is very vague and its not interesting in a mysterious way either. the landscapes are sort of varied but not really. it still feels very modern and there are great visuals. but i cant see myself paying much for the sequel knowing what this one is like but at $5 this is worth it

its the same as every call of duty multiplayer ever released, just more refined. Paying full price for this game is for fools since the company is basically releasing the same game every year. I got this for $45 on sale, worth the value for the realistic pvp gunplay and great graphics. But there are serious issues with the small campaign, multiplayer spawn logic and SBMM intensity

Destiny 24
Apr 14, 2024
After about 40 hours or so, completing some major quest lines, the constant attempts to upsell DLC content felt very predatory, I could never recommend something like this to other people with good conscience. The core gameplay loop of gunplay shooting is very fun but the entire game itself is structured around grinding to keep the players hooked in cheap ways rather than focusing on enjoyable experiences. Eventually all the content becomes very repetitive and stale. There's a lack of real progression knowing that your progress is going to be wiped by next season and that you need to buy a season pass to progress the level system. Sometimes it feels like I'm stuck in loading screens 30-45% of the time. Navigating the UI is somewhat painful. The story is also disjointed and incomprehensible for new players. If someone says the story in destiny 2 is good, that's like saying marvel universe movies are masterpieces

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel7
Apr 9, 2024
the game lacks polish compared to BL1, BL2, feels like a DLC game but it has some good moments. Specific main characters we've seen in BL1 and BL2 are explored well, and I wish we saw more of athena later in BL3. the oxygen mechanic is a hit/miss, a nuisance to me but if we still had hover in BL3 that would have been nice.

Borderlands 29

major QoL gameplay improvements over BL1. Has the best story in the series, and better pacing than BL3, but the gunplay is not satisfying as BL1 or BL3. It's good as a standalone first-time intro to the series, very immersive and arguably the best multiplayer experience too.

Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition8
Mar 28, 2024
if borderlands 3 is an 8/10 for its gameplay aspects, borderlands 1 is a 8/10 for capturing a cohesive gritty dark aesthetic through its game that really gives you the feeling of being a vault hunter left stranded in a dangerous brutal world. there are many old-feeling mechanics and glitches and lack of QoL aspects that ruin gameplay flow and immersion but it has the themes all right. i didnt feel i understood 'vault hunter' concept properly after doing BL3 but BL1 really gives you that feeling.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End7
Mar 24, 2024
the game has a decent story, good characters but i am not a fan of the gameplay itself, feels boring. at chapter 14/22, i am going to stop. most of the game is platforming challenges and solving puzzles, like 20-30% of it is gun-fighting. i finished uncharted 1 and 2 fast and enjoyed their pacing and gameplay elements but this one has really slow pacing and feels more like they focus more on the problem-solving challenge over whether it is fun to play through. it becomes formulaic in mid-game, feels like a chore to advance the story. the story itself becomes tired, its a wild goose chase resembling mario going to the wrong castle over and over
PlayStation 4

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot8
Mar 24, 2024
Positives: stays very close to the source material of the OG show, specifically will cater to nostalgia but hard to say whether it'd be good as a stand-alone game. satisfying-ish modern combat for a dragonball z game. does a good job of capturing the storytelling magic of the original tv series.
Negatives: RPG style elements that feel like a total hassle. I almost quit the game at the start due to the slow start and boring introduction to the open RPG world. I care mostly about the story and the combat, I dont care about meal dishes, or collecting random items, but the game tries very hard to make you do it. You need to collect items to unlock some characters movesets, even essential movesets like final flash on vegeta or kameha on gohan. Each saga had 1-2 filler fetch-item quests, made purposely confusing. Heals are consumables and difficult to come by if you do main quests alone. Too much focus on items and trying to make me 'grind' even though i skipped all of the side content

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands8
Mar 17, 2024
this game takes away everything i disliked about borderlands 3 and improves on it. no more driving crappy cars, just straight shooting and basic platforming. the story doesn't take itself seriously and ends up having some really good moments because of it. i dont think this would be worth $50-70 but as a game I played through the PS Plus subscription, it is really good and finding people to play with is what makes it especially enjoyable. yes there are issues with glitches sometimes, graphics could be better, but the core gameplay elements are just right

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade6
Mar 15, 2024
11 hours in, I've had enough, don't want to play anymore. The amount of unfun minigames are excessive and very boring, from picking up flowers to picking up boxes with loot crates. the story is cheesy and follows japanese anime tropes. the english dialogue audio is awful and is more bearable in japanese audio. much of the game feels like filler, there's decent boss fights but also many moments when theres nothing really happening, it feels like they're taking up time for nothing. the combat is fun-ish, its modern but theres few complex or meaningful decisions to be made. the gameplay outside of the combat is mainly corridor-to-corridor, extremely linear. It's just too boring to keep going, I can't handle another lame puzzle or more cheesy dialogue and filler-level events

Psychonauts 26
Mar 13, 2024
this game reminds me of ratchet & clank but also its different in a lot of ways. 10 hours in, I have no motivation to finish the game. the good: the story is complex, the characters are unique, the main character is very likable, some puzzles are satisfying to complete. the bad: There's not many powerful weapons, very weak. the focus is more on platforming over combat. theres only 4 buttons for picking between a wheel of weapons, very annoying. exploration of areas feels daunting with no live map. too many random collectables, confusing gear upgrade shop.
I like the concept of the game overall, the older mechanics of the game make it unpleasant to play.

Code Vein8
Mar 5, 2024
Highly underrated game, it's basically anime dark souls without the hype. i skipped most cutscenes halfway into the game. the gameplay alone is worth it, but the story seems decent. the combat system is surprisingly complex and is automatically a duo-journey scheme. the game eases you into difficulty with the more difficult parts appearing near mid-game and notably appearing at endgame. there is a ton of potential here in the formula. the old mechanics really show in the gameplay but it could rightfully be called an unofficial souls game just for how it does things uniquely in its own way.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood7
Feb 29, 2024
8/10 at release but 7/10 for 2024 gameplay, the outdated nature shows with the lack of hand-to-hand combat versatility. the brotherhood system is the most notable improvement over AC1 and AC2. the game has some cheesy dialogue and plot progression but does a good job of selling Ezio himself. The missions are mostly fun but also many noticable annoying missions too. Anything related to Desmond is an annoying parkour puzzle, it overstays its welcome.

God of War: Ragnarok8
Feb 21, 2024
this is a very different game from the OG god of war games. the combat system is better than 2018, with more meaningful decisions and mob varieties. Production quality is very high and there is a large amount of core + optional content. Too much time spent on cutscenes, especially for filler content. disney/marvel-type of plot, a disappointingly safe progression of events. Takes little to no risks unlike its predecessors bold and brutal approaches. it had potential to be a masterpiece but the glaring issues with the last 25% of the game having rushed plot development and almost illogical sequence of events, leaves much to be desired

Dark Souls9
Feb 13, 2024
the game is a technological marvel for its time. if you were to judge it by that standard, its a 10/10. modern gameplay-wise it still holds up extremely well. My only real complaint is some large boss run-back times combined with gimmicky bosses that kill you in 1-2 shots. when the boss feels fair or you're able to do more attempts without 5 minutes running each time, it is usually very satisfying flow of gaming, otherwise it feels like a major reset simulator

Demon's Souls8
Feb 6, 2024
naturally hard difficulty. the levels are harder than the bosses since there is no checkpoints, you just start at spawn over and over, can be rage-inducing. the bosses are varied, often puzzle-like mechanics, very satisfying once you win. the game's age shows in the janky mechanics. But for its time, easily a masterpiece and it still holds up very well in the remake
