Citizen Sleeper is an amazing piece of sci-fi media and an even better TTRPG game that will have you glued to your seat to the early hours of the morning, reading and trying to figure out how this world and its colorful characters work. If you love adventure and story in games you mustn’t pass on this one.
Citizen Sleeper is a title that we feel we can promote without too many hesitations because it represents what any author's game should be: a personal work that carries out its main theme within its systems, that is, that makes its ultimate meaning in the mechanics alive.
That a game is this stimulating with out a sword swinging or gun blasting.... It's been maybe decades since I remember enjoying reading this much. This is what Shakespeare would've done if he were born today...Incredibly well written, entertaining, and deeply soul-stirring
A perfect vibe The artwork is unique and really detailed The layes back atmosphere gives to some more pressing matters The story is cliché but touching
And a really nice touch on the role playing genre
Citizen Sleeper creates a strong universe and gives the main character an engaging story with plenty of choices. Erlin’s Eye feels like a small part of a well-designed narrative space that can support more exploration. The visual design fits in with the wider themes of the game and the characters never become preachy. The problem is that the developer also cares about gameplay and the concept of investing for a result. The dice system is adequate enough, but everything takes so long and requires too many clicks. Citizen Sleeper would have probably worked better as a more classic visual novel, with the resources assigned to mechanics re-routed to deliver more story.
Citizen Sleeper is fantastic. It's a deep and well-crafted narrative experience with a fascinating setting, and is filled with plenty of challenging questions for players to ponder over. This is a game that gets cyberpunk right.
Overall, Citizen Sleeper is the kind of game one has to be in the right mood for. The setting is cold and alienating, while the overall mood for much of the game is a desperate struggle for survival against stacked odds. Once the stress of this abates, however, there are some genuinely lovely moments of characterization and storytelling that are absolutely worth it to experience. The challenging dice-based tabletop gaming experience is stressful at first, but loses some of its challenge as situations are dealt with, giving way to lovely and thought-provoking story interludes. With the developer supporting the game further with several pieces of free DLC, there’s a good amount of worthwhile sci-fi to experience here.
I can't love this game enough. I've never played a game of this genre, but loved it. The story is freaking great and I hope there's a sequel to this game in the works. Oh and the soundtrack is insanely **** good.
It was a slow start, but once I started and knew how to play I really loved this game. But not so much could be said about the second half of the game. The early/mid gameplay was really nice, but late game you are too op and everything from there is extremely time consuming and repetitive tasks. It did not help at all that the whole refugee arc which is essentially the second half of the game was not remotely interesting compared to the first half of the story.Although I really liked the dice mechanic, I wish they added some sort of time mechanic like morning/day whatever like how some other story games of this type do. I just really didnt like this game's day mechanic of where you sleep whenever as you had very limited actions a day and it made the game feel very time consuming / repetitive in many parts, while lots of it was also just spent waiting towards the end of the game for new chapters to unlock as there is a waiting period. I hope they have a better mechanic polishing for Citizen Sleeper 2 which I'll def be playing soon.Lastly the game is bit of a word dump. I wish they condensed the countless paragraphs a bit more, and add in some art or animated scenes, as the game is just a massive book with game mechanics to stall out the reading. I think having less filler in the story would've been super beneficial, as lots of the content was filler. Some of it was nice but other times it felt a real drag reading through like the refugee section where the story isn't interesting. The story choices usually had very little actual impact too, as most only change a sentence or paragraph, with only the very ending changing, whether you "pass" or "failed".
interesting stuff. i do not understand why they would have only 3 classes though. there's no class that has a boost to awareness or head on engagement, so it feels unfinished from the start.
Clunky UI and mechanics. Was meant to simulate a TTRPG but they didn't show rolls well and results were inconsistent with what I would consider a success or failure. Lore and characters were interesting at least
I like the artstyle, the mechanics are fun. However the ideological hammer that beats you in the head is a bit difficult to miss. The evil capitalist corporation, that owns everything including your body (you get it?! Not your body, not your choice!) Fights the good physically strong women. It's too blatant for good storytelling and makes it more like a fairy tale than cyberpunk. There are no gray-area for your morals. Everything is black or white, good or bad. A bit lazy story..
