A mixed bag. It’s fun to revisit one of the first “looter shooters” for consoles again, and the mix of run, gun, and loot still holds up well despite its age. But this is hardly a perfect port/remaster of that game, and because of that, it’s difficult to really suggest picking it up.

Gearbox's release of Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition brings the missing piece of the franchise to current generation consoles. Mechanical and visual improvements solidify Borderlands has always been a fun, beautiful game that was quite forward-thinking despite some things not aging well.

Having already seen Borderlands 2 squeezed into the PlayStation Vita (with, admittedly, ropey results), it’s a surprise this version of the first game isn’t also coming out on Nintendo Switch, but that’s an issue for another day. For many though, having an excuse to replay Borderlands 1 on the same console as the Handsome Collection is good enough. Definitely worth a play if you’ve never done so before, but perhaps not all that essential anymore.

The PS4 remaster of Borderlands is essentially the definitive way to experience the original game. It keeps everything that made the 2009 release unique while polishing the visuals and performance for modern **** core loop is still strong — satisfying first-person shooting combined with addictive loot progression. The randomized weapons system remains the highlight, constantly pushing you to search for better gear. Pandora’s world-building still stands out, with its lawless atmosphere, corporate influence, and strange inhabitants giving the game **** remaster improves textures, lighting, and overall smoothness, making it more enjoyable to revisit. It runs better, looks cleaner, and feels less rough around the edges compared to the original PS3 version. However, despite the improvements, the core design still shows its age. Some mission structures feel repetitive, enemy AI can feel basic, and the storytelling is more restrained compared to later entries.Even so, it’s still a fun and visually distinctive experience thanks to its cel-shaded art style, which ages better than most realistic shooters from that era. It absolutely deserves credit for creating the blueprint that the series would later refine. While this remaster is the best version of the original, the later titles in the franchise significantly improve in writing, humor, emotional depth, and gameplay mechanics. If you enjoy this, the sequels only raise the bar.

Not a game that particularly needed a remaster but that in itself speaks to the quality of the original and the potential of the new sequel.

Borderlands 1 is clearly the worst in the series. Its gameplay isn't as fluid as Borderlands 3, its RPG elements aren't as fun as Borderlands 2, its loot is boring, its characters or villains and dialogue just aren't that interesting, but the core is there. Its still a decent start for the series and thankfully it was a shorter Borderlands experience so it didn't overstay.

I'm giving this a 1 until the powers that be FIX THE MATCHMAKING! Since this launched 3 days ago, my friends have struggled to play together (the way this game was intended to play ). The end result is wasted hours with all 3 of us not being able to get together & bailing in frustration. Until that glairing issue is fixed, this game only warrants a 1 from me. I strongly recommend to stay away from this game until its fixed!

The matchmaking in this thing is broken...Unless you want to play solo offline its nothing more than menu simulator **** can't join random games, you can't invite your **** sure who thought it was a great idea to release this thing in this **** also pretty sure the fast travel is also broken, because in trying to fast travel ANYWHERE your only options are the DLC **** looking forward to this, but when you release it with broken matchmaking yeah no.....Maybe that could change when they fix it, but somehow considering who is involved I bet its not a **** don't forget to pre-order Borderlands 3, this game is constantly going to remind you to do that. So is the Handsome collection that they could patch in pre-order 3, and I would bet its also in Borderlands 2 VR
SummaryBorderlands is an RPG sci-fi shooter that features four player online co-op.
