There's a fine line between graphic artistry and immaturity, and while Alter Echo makes an attempt at the former, it probably falls into the latter. The hues are creative enough, and the faux-naturelle structures suitably curled and alien but perhaps the real problem is that a world made from plastic would look as dull as it sounds. [Nov 2003, p.109]

You'll never get lost instantly die from misjudged jumps, or have to play through difficult parts ten times over. Consequently, it's also a little too easy. [Oct 2003, p.135]

There's an abundance of camera problems and the enemy AI is dumb as a doornail. [Oct 2003, p.38]

The game is very fun.I played it on the PS3 via the PS2 classic **** Story is very interesting, the combat is also on a very good level.I want to give it a higher score, but the controls are not good(maybe its just me),the invert option seemed to not working for me and some performance issues steal some of the gameplay fun.

I wish there was a more creative way to say that this game is just boring. Got it for a bargain without expecting much of anything and discovered it was just mediocre. Bad games are one thing--they have the potential to be funny--but mediocre games just have meh structure, meh stories, meh characters, and meh gameplay. But, it is playable, so I'll grant it that.

All I can say about this game is that it is incredibly average. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since the game comes across as harmless, but it's not a compliment either. It has a nice atmosphere, but the story and the gameplay are just kinda weak. If you stumble upon it for less than $10 at the game store then go ahead and pick it up. But it's only worth going out of your way to find it if you're a PS2 game collector.

A unique action game that’s repetitive in its style and level structure, Alter Echo is kept from being boring by its over-exaggerated morphing combo system and a wide variety of enemies that adapt to your attacks.

It would have been nice to have seen some more variety in the environments, and the instances of backtracking through areas you've already visited are disappointing. But the game's exciting, free-form combat makes up for those deficiencies.

The coolness of the character-morphing and combat are overshadowed by the repetitive and linear play and a lackluster look.
60
The story is predictable to a fault, but with a nice twist ending.
50
There's some mindless fun on offer here, but in terms of depth and replay value, Alter Echo simply doesn't cut the mustard.

It’s as if the guys at Outrage struck upon innovative gameplay ideas but they just couldn’t mould a good game around them.

You'll quickly realise that it's button bashing and not finesse that will aid you in your quest. Add to this a tacked-on rhythm-action game and you're left with a shallow and derivative game that offers no redeeming features. [Nov 2003, p.122]
