My kind of horror. It was really good. Graphics don’t hold up as much today; but, for its time, it’s a great FP horror game with plenty of jump scares to keep you on your toes.
This game was a lot of fun. Awesome story and even better gameplay. Love the titan combat. A little too short of a campaign.Protagonist is a bit vanilla, but BT is cool.
Damn, this story and plot is excellent. A tad too similar of gameplay to Spider-Man and Miles Morales, but the upgradables and skill trees are pretty cool. Fast Travel is very well done in this. Combat gets repetitive during the first half of the game, but the difficulty spike makes it more of a challenge all the way to the end. Admittedly, some bosses you can just spam heavy attacks and gadgets on until you win, but it was still enjoyable. Definitely recommend this trilogy!
Maybe I'm the anomaly, here. I didn't like this game at all. I love stealth games where I'm required to kill my enemies without alerting others. But this was just too slow and punishing for me. Maybe it requires more time and skill to really enjoy this, but I can't say this is for me.
The idea of being a police car that's only purpose is to get into high-speed chases and stop perpetrators by ramming into them until their car breaks sounds awesome... until you realize that the game could be so much better. That's literally all you do in this game: you chase after a car, you drive into them until their meter fills all the way up, and then it says, "Suspect Apprehended" and forgets about what just happened. It would be so much cooler to actually be the officer and simulate arresting the suspect and taking him to jail. It would be a bit more realistic. Here's the main thing that REALLY makes the game frustrating. You'd better be really good at driving games and put your pedal to the floor if you want a shot at this. If you make one wrong turn or a slight mistake/oversight when chasing someone, you have approximately 3 seconds to get back in range before you fail the mission or the suspect gets away. Even if you can still see the car or are on your way back into pursuit, the game will just fail you without giving you enough time. What a crock of ****.
My favorite RPG on the PS1 is Final Fantasy IX, hands down. So when I play other RPGs on consoles around the same time as the PS1, I often compare them to FFIX. Suikoden II is pretty close, even though the graphics are not nearly the same, nor the story. In Suikoden II, the drama element is very well done. As soon as you begin the campaign, you're thrown right into conflict and need to make decisions quickly that can impact your story. The music is fantastic, as well. Battles are pretty simple and straightforward, like most RPGs. What I liked most is that you can team up with some members of your party to inflict more damage to collective groups of enemies (which I did when I found myself outnumbered). The only issues that I had with the game were fairly minor. One, navigating isn't really analog-friendly. I found myself using the d-pad more often because turning while walking/running was too stiff and wouldn't register. The other issue that was an inconvenience was navigating the open world... you're forced to talk painfully slow, and you need to guess where you're going when you're told to go to another town for items or progress with the story. Again, nothing that damns the game, but it is a bit annoying. If you're into RPG's, this is one you should try.
I'm admittedly more into Resident Evil than Silent Hill when it comes to survival horror games. When I found out that they were remaking Silent Hill 2, I was reluctantly excited. On one hand, I had never played a Silent Hill game before (but I really wanted to). On the other hand, I was looking forward to being introduced to the series through a re-told story of the beloved second game. Once I got my hands on a copy of this, I was stoked to try it out. While writing this review, I must admit that I haven't beaten it yet (although, I am close). The puzzles and riddles are surprisingly difficult! If you enjoy escape rooms like me, you'll like a lot of these puzzles, as most of them require you to do some detective work around rooms that you're locked inside of. This is probably my favorite part of the game. The story is interesting. I also like the main protagonist, as he is determined to find his wife while also encountering the demons of his past. The voice acting is hit and miss on this, as some lines are delivered a bit awkwardly, while others are emotionally driven (and this is an emotional game, for sure). The monsters are damn terrifying, but it doesn't really scare me or immerse me more in the game. However, Pyramid Head is a damn BEAST... kudos to whoever conjured him up in their nightmares. Overall, it's a really good survival horror game that takes lots of time and patience to defeat the monsters of Silent Hill, as well as the puzzles required to open areas and find weapons/items. I'm looking forward to finishing it.
If this game came out on some console during the late 90's when I was really into Pokemon, I would have probably cried tears of joy. This is essentially an open-world RPG reminiscent of the Pokemon Blue or Red. The story is much more in-depth, though, which I found myself not really getting invested in. The battling is very interesting in this - you can battle 1:1 or have a 2-on-2 matchup. If you played any of the Pokemon handheld games, you can pick this up and play it no problem. The music is also pretty charming for each stage. The only main issue I had with this game is that the character models really aren't that spectacular. Some models look bland, other models look dead (seriously, when an NPC is staring at me with cold, gray eyes, I'm not sure if I'm talking to another trainer or a zombie). Pokemon fans should definitely play this one.
Ed, Edd n Eddy was one of my favorite shows on Cartoon Network, growing up. This game doesn't do it justice by much. While the voice acting is there to bring a tear to your nostalgic eye, the animation is definitely off-putting (I sincerely hate when character models in games can't blink their eyes... so unnatural). The gameplay is also pretty tedious and bland. It's cool to be able to switch between the "Ed Boys," as each has their own unique abilities. But playing these missions ("scams") was boring after having to do the same things again and again only for the game to give you a percentage of how much is left. Even if you're a fan of the show, there's no need to play this game... unless you're that bored.
This had a neat idea for a plot, but the execution was really awkward and funky. To start with the pros, the game is pretty simple to control and is easy to pick up and play. Possessing people (and objects, for some weird reason) is easy to understand, as it's required to get through levels and missions. I've also got to say that this is the first time I've played a Gamecube game with this much violence and gore (I dunno, I've pretty much associated Nintendo as a family-friendly gaming company, so seeing an alien monster bit the head off of some guy was a bit surprising). Now, the cons... this game seems amateurly done. The character models are weird (check some NPC eyes... they can be huge), the voice acting is awkward, and the game physics are pretty unnatural. The game also seems glitchy, as some models clip through doors and other objects. It had a cool idea, but I didn't really enjoy this as much. You can definitely skip past this game.
This is basically if Super Mario 64 was a kid wearing a chicken suit and rolling an egg to his destination. Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg is adorable. The graphics are so nice, and it's a fun concept. The music is also pretty upbeat and catchy. My main gripe with it is that it's almost too easy. I compare it to Super Mario 64 (you'll see them similarities when you play it - end-of-level items, mission/world selections), but this is child's play compared to how difficult Super Mario 64 can be as soon as you pick it up and play it for the first time. Overall, this is definitely worth a play (and playthrough, if you're really into it), but there are better games for the Gamecube than this.
It's a cute game that charms with its desire to be a 3D platformer. I like the idea! Use your bombs to collect items and powerups; solve puzzles by using bombs to clear paths and build bridges to get you to the next area. But I feel like this game gets stuck in trying to be too cute. There isn't a lot of tutorial to this. It's "pick up a bomb to make it into a big bomb"... but it doesn't necessarily tell you how to pick up the bomb you just put down. It's not a deal-breaker - I think if you like puzzle games or platformers that you might like this one. But I'd rather play others that are better than this.
I can tell this came from a time when "scary" or "thrilling" meant gore and unnecessary violence. I think the plot of this game is interesting - end up on death row and things go south immediately when you get there, so you need to investigate what these things are that are killing everyone in the prison, and what you've got to do with everything happening around you. Story-wise, I'm invested. However, this is definitely a dated game. Character models look super goofy (it's safe to assume that more detail and work went towards the next generation of consoles this was made on). The dialogue is also pretty bland and doesn't hold up too well. I also sense that some enemies were inspired by Silent Hill, which is pretty neat. This is worth a play if you're interested, and definitely worth a run through if the story catches your attention. But that's it.
The combat is surprisingly fun and satisfying. The voice acting is really well done as it appears most of the voice cast makes a return for this game. I liked the idea of collecting items and powering up Jack's Soul Robber. Additionally, Jack's move set is actually pretty neat. Then, there were the cons of this game... First, the licensed music is here, and it's nostalgic to hear for us 90's gamers. However, hearing "This Is Halloween" during almost every fight that Jack encounters gets old after a while. Even Kingdom Hearts didn't jam the song down your throat as much as this game does, and Halloween Town's soundtrack is LITERALLY just that song. There's also really awkward moments during boss battles where it becomes a rhythm game. It's not difficult or anything... it just seems out of place. You'll be wailing on Oogie Boogie, and then it turns into a DDR game with a controller. I'm sure you'll like this game if you're a fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas or hack-n-slash beat-em-ups. It's a charming attempt, but it just didn't grab my attention.
Up to this point of my life, I'd never played a God of War game (and that's insane for me, seeing as how much of a Sony fanboy I've grown up to be). This was an amazing start for the series. The combat is basic, yet super fun - you hack and slash, you pull enemies apart, and you destroy everything in your path as you reach your objectives. Boss fights are challenging, and they use quick-time events to make them interesting. The weapon upgrade system in this game is simple and straightforward. The platforming parts of God of War are pretty decent (I especially like how jumping while climbing nets makes Kratos climb much faster). Kratos is a BAD ASS CHARACTER. He isn't a protagonist or a hero, as the player quickly learns when they play this for about an hour. The kills that you can perform with him are BRUTAL. Kratos doesn't just stab an enemy in the heart or put it out of its misery... he makes it as gruesome and painful as necessary to prove that he should not be **** with. Simply iconic. My only gripes with this game are minor, but they can't be ignored. First, the fixed camera becomes annoying pretty quickly - especially when you travel on narrow paths or poles. I found myself falling off frequently because I couldn't tell exactly which way Kratos was leaning as he lost his balance. It also limits the navigation in each area. The other issue I had is that there isn't a lock-on system during combat. Like I mentioned, this is mainly hack-n-slash combat, so Kratos will just swing his swords at enemies all around him until all are dead. Is this a bad feature? Not exactly... but it could be improved for flying enemies or those that you want to exterminate first. This may be one of the best games on the PS2. SO glad I finally got around to play this.
I love the mech suit fighting! This also played very clean and well as far as the story goes. While the battle gameplay can be a little tedious, as I was spamming the basic attacks and doing mostly fine, the difficulty spike increases shortly after you start playing it. This is a lot of fun!
The designs from the levels to the characters are really nice for being on the PS2. The voice acting is also really good most of the time. I think the fighting and battles are fun in this game compared to other action RPGs that I've tried. This is a definite must-try.
This game is actually pretty unique, as far as RPG's go. I like the Westernized, gunslinging feel. The focus on multiple characters rather than one main protagonist is also a nice feature to the game. The battle mode is very basic and easy to use for first-time players. Story is easy to follow, as well. The character designs are a bit blocky, but it's still a bit charming. Fans of RPG's would like this, for sure.
This looks and plays very clean - like an actual anime (I, admittedly, don't watch any anime, so that's saying a lot coming from me). I like how the dialogue selections are timed and a bit more interactive than other games. Some prompts require you to put more emotion or energy into your responses to elicit certain responses from other characters. Graphics are also awesome for the PS2. Navigating between areas on the map is pretty quick and simple - just select where you want to go, and voila! Downsides... it's mainly just dialogue-driven, which drives my ADHD brain crazy. It gets pretty boring at times, and I find myself skimming through conversations and dialogue just to look for exposition or ANY action. That's really my only problem with this game, but it's not a big one. In conclusion, if you are into Japanese culture and like games that are more artistic and dialogue-driven, this is for you. It's not for me, but I still enjoyed it a bit.
This was sort of boring, to me. I love FF Tactics, so I thought this was going to be up my alley. The music is kinda weird and choppy… not like that has a huge effect on the game. But the battles can take forever when you have to wait your turn.
YESSSSSSS. This is what I needed back in the day. I remember finding out this existed so that I could play Alpha and Alpha 2, only to find out that there was also Alpha 3 Gold AND Street Fighter II Turbo? Sign me up. Also, a nice addition of the animated Street Fighter II movie. Love this.
This is such a fun game. Voice acting is a bit funny, but the missions are smooth (although, short). The replayability is definitely there, and you can unlock multiplayer skins by completing missions on different difficulties. That gold PP9 is so sick.
Great sense of humor with some pretty nice voice acting, to boot. However, this is pretty dang close to Ratchet & Clank, game-play wise. I also thought the controls were a bit wonky.
This is fine. The military strategy is a cool feature, and the story seems pretty interesting. But the lighting and brightness can be a bit off-putting, and the controls are weird for a military-style FPS.
The story is intriguing but the gameplay is pretty awkward. I was a bit disappointed trying this after playing other survival horror games. It just wasn’t for me.
I loved this remake! God, I wish RE3Remake was this planned-out and detailed. The perfect difficulty settings with an interesting expansion on the original game. I HIGHLY recommend this one.
This game is near perfect. Story is awesome, and the stealth gameplay is excellent. My only gripe is that cut scenes are SOOOOO LOOOOONG. Hey - it’s a Kojima game.
This is a fun GTA that’s a bit tamer, in a sense. Definitely couldn’t make this game today with the dialogue and premise, but I would have loved a sequel.
This game was a blast to play. Replayability is there; but there’s also so much to do! The design and display is literally straight out of an episode of the show. The writing is pretty great, as is the dialogue. Some of the gameplay is repetitive. And I wish that there were more rewards for using specific party members. Like ways to level them up or make them stronger, too. But all in all, this game is a blast for fans of the show, or even fans of RPGs.
For being a timidly dark game, it’s actually gorgeous as far as visuals go. Love the art design on this.Gameplay gets monotonous after a whilr, but the variety of puzzles keeps it interesting.Cool upgrade system as well. It’s a solid pickup.
Sorry, I’m just not into the “you’re going to die a lot. Good luck.”games. The idea is really nice, and the design is dark and twisted. But I didn’t really have gun playing this. I’m sure it’s a great game… it’s just not for me.
Just amazing. Not my favorite Final Fantasy game in the series; but this game is really damn good. Story is great, characters have pretty nice depth, and the battles can be really fun. Speaking of which, I really like the battle layout in FFX! Being able to swap characters out mid-battle makes it much less stressful and more fluid. Hell yes for this game!
I didn’t have a lot of expectations for this game, but I actually found it to be a bit addicting. While the kill cam is a bit overdone, it’s super satisfying seeing where your bullet travels and what kind of kill you achieve. Story is pretty linear, and side missions are not very rewarding to play through (unless you’re a completionist). This game is worth getting on sale or for free (thanks, PS+), but it’s not worth the full retail price.
This is definitely a step up from Hitman Agent 47. The weapon/item navigation is much easier, as is the controller-friendly mobility. Sneaking is so god damn slow…I often missed out on subduing enemies because I wasn’t following them quickly enough. It’s also a big buggy at times - enemies get stuck in doors, and the game crashed for me once because I was jammed underneath someone coming down a ladder.
The story is fine, but it gets a bit ADD at times. I forgot about my pastor buddy being kidnapped until the end of the game just reminded me (“Oh ****! There WAS a plot to this game!”).I had some fun playing this, and I was looking forward to the end. Speaking of which, the end boss fight is pretty easy. A bit of a letdown. It’s a good entry to the series, but it’s not the best Hitman game out of them all.
For the first game in the Hitman series, Codename 47 isn’t bad by any means. Sure, it’s a bit glitchy, and the strict-keyboard/mouse usage can take a bit for console players like me to learn (I tried using controller and mapping it to a keyboard, but it really isn’t recommended). But the plot is fairly decent, as it explains why 47 is doing what he’s doing and who he is. The assassinations ate a bit linear, but the way they progress the story is simple enough. This game wasn’t necessarily created for people to explore assassinations like you would today, with the new versions allowing players to display their “creativity”. However, for its time, Codename 47 is an OK game, but it can definitely be skipped. Seriously? If you fail the mission or die, you need to start from the beginning? Major flaw.
SSX On Tour is a really good addition to the series, but SSX Tricky is still the greatest snowboarding game ever made. The game modes are just OK. Campaign (“tour”) is a bit lackluster. You race a familiar name, as well as some new ones. It’s over. The end. Then you race someone else. It’s over. The end. You can upgrade your boards, buy new tricks. But they’re so DAMN EXPENSIVE! This is fun, but it’s not great.
Dunks areSUPER satisfying - as are the blocked shots. I still think NBA Street Vol. 2 is the best basketball game I’ve ever played, but this is also great. It’s very fluid and easy to control. I like the 1 on 1 game mode. It’s a great game for the time it came out!
I must say that, next to the Mario Golf series, Hot Shots is definitely one of the better “fun” golf games. Pretty simple to play for newcomers - pretty competitive for virtual golf gaming veterans, like myself. The art style is… cute… for a lack of better words. It’s also nice to have a caddy that helps you and gives you advice on which clubs to use or which direction to aim your putt. Is HSG Fore! a great game? Not exactly. Some inputs are a little finicky (at least, for me they were), and it isn’t a golf game that I could pick up and play for hours (are there many, though?). But I think it’s really good!If you’re a golf-gamer, it’s definitely worth a couple playthroughs, at least.
It’s cool that they made another Crash game in its typical format. But I just feel it was kind of unnecessary. Did we really need another crash game? Was bringing back Tawna really what people wanted? It just felt like a bit much. Not as simple as the better Crash games.
I’ve always wanted a Final Fantasy game to play like Kingdom Hearts as far as the Action RPG element goes(that last FF game I’ve played was X); and this one met my expectations. I thought this game was a lot of fun to play, and it was super creative. I LOVE that they remade this - it’s a beautiful creation with breathtaking visuals (for the most part). However, the voice acting and character animations can be a bit cringe. It also feels a bit… watered down compared to its original PS1 release. It’s a lot of fun, but I don’t think it’s the best FF game ever made. Now if they remade FFIX as an action rpg and maintained the story to a “t”…
This is a really fun co-op game to play locally with your friend or your spouse. My brother in law and I were sometimes rolling with how goofy and over-the-top we could make interactions and gameplay.
If you’re looking to take this seriously… maybe don’t expect too much. Acting is fine, but dialogue and delivery is a little wonky. Also, the story is a bit stale. I won’t give away too much, but it got to the point where I was questioning the plot more than I was “just going along with it”. Overall: 6/10 local co-op and gameplay. 5/10 story/campaign.
Listen. The premise of this game is silly, but this game is a little catchy. VERY simple to pick up and play. It’s funny that the cover of this game makes the wolf seem so cartoonish and mischievous, when the game actually describes him as being some sort of a hell hound that was encased in concrete so he wouldn’t terrorize towns and villages. Gotta love Rare!
Great game! Love how crisp, yet ominous the graphics are with the remake! I love survival horror games, and this is definitely in my Top 3. Story is fantastic, and the tension is near-constant. Isaac isn’t the most spectacular protagonist (and good LORD is he slow with that suit), but he fits the part for this game. My only cons are minimal. First, I needed to rely on the guide (R3), as it is very easy to get lost in the Ishimura. The second, missions can be fairly repetitive, as you need to turn on circuit breakers, move batteries, and destroy tendrils up the wazoo. Difficulty is just right - perfectly challenging while not rage-quit inducing. Pretty nice twist, too! If you’re a fan of Silent Hill or Resident Evil, you NEED to check this out.
This is a neat upgrade to Super Star; but it’s too easy. If you’re well-versed in the Kirby games, you’ll more than likely fly through this. The power-ups are OP in most stages, which doesn’t make it too challenging. It’s a good game, but not my favorite in the Kirby franchise.
This game was an absolute friggin’ BLAST. I didn’t have that high of expectations going into this game, but MAN was I pleasantly surprised. The upgrade system is very unique and innovative, as are the weapons (although, I found myself really only relying on a select arsenal rather than some that were just meant to be silly weapons).
The animation and story development is top notch. I genuinely cracked up at the humor of this game. This is legitimately a game both children and adults can play. Simple enough to hack and slash for bolts, challenging enough where you’re not necessarily going to breeze through it in a day (unless you’re like that).
Story gets a little cliché at some points, but this is an excellent game. A must-play for PlayStation gamers, for sure.
I like tactic turned-based strategy games, and I like RPGs. This is a really good game; but my only issue is that I compare it to the simplicity of Final Fantasy Tactics (which, I swear is the only game that nails the genre 100%). For fans of FFT, this game is for you.
