Assassin's Creed III4

This game has a lot of good - the free running is a lot of fun, and the locations are interesting. The good, however, is clogged within so many overwhelming problems. The story is not good, and it lasts way too long. The modern day parts just show how problematic the story is. There is serious drag in this game which makes it frustrating to play after a while.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition10

This has quickly become one of my favorite games ever. It's presentation is phenomenal and the characters are phenomenal. The characters are both deep and likable and make the entire experience feel just like that - an experience. The world is so enchanting, and the towns give the player a nice break from the combat and exploration. Coming into a town feels like you'r entering a vacation, especially after finishing the quests surrounding the town. The landscapes are great and exciting to explore. The combat is snappy and classic, and the worldbuilding is phenomenal. It has a classic and lasting impression that resonates with you that you're playing something carefully crafted. It's jokes are funny, it's sentimental moments are sentimental, and the quality of life improvements make this the best version of the game. This game is relaxing, with the right doses of sentimental moments, serious moments, and action moments.

The visuals are stunning, and the gameplay is super fun. It's one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played, making the game extremely exciting to play. It contains a level of polish rarely seen. This game oozes with character. The game runs on the easy side, but that's okay simply because of how fun it is. It doesn't have as much freedom as the original, but new mechanics get introduced that made me want to explore previous floors again.

Super Mario 3D World6
Jul 30, 2019
Super Mario 3D World, while well designed, does not give the ambitious adventure found in many other Mario games. The game has flawless level design, but the locations and HUB worlds feel so empty and forgettable. It's not a journey like 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy (1 and 2), it's more of a laid back road trip. While this isn't inherently bad, it is lackluster and basic, lacking the ambition to make it special.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle7
Jul 30, 2019
This game is fun and the battle are really creative and unique... However, much of the game is played too safe or frustrating. The puzzles between fights are too simple to be satisfying, and sometimes fights seem to common or repetitive. However, the game has some great features and upgrades, a great 2- player mode, and some great fights and secrets. It's great to see these two worlds collide, but it doesn't guarantee perfection.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild9
Jul 30, 2019
For generations, open world games have been striving to create a world that's not only beautiful in it's graphical process, but beautiful in it's world building and nature interactions Breath of the Wild might be the first game to master it's own world and make something beautifully immersive and sincere. The quiet music works to give the player a feeling of loneliness and hopelessness. There is a deep and dark feeling about the world that intrigues the player and urges them to keep going. The lack of invisible walls gives the player full control, and there is a shrine around every corner to draw the players to a new puzzle. The shrines are fantastic: being short and sweet, they are basic and to the point. The divine beasts, while somewhat underwhelming, are still a blast to explore. This game is so immersive, and the memories continue to give the players a story to look for throughout the vast world.

LEGO City Undercover0
Jul 30, 2019
This game fails to understand what makes GTA so refreshing. This game builds an open world, but then fills it with invisible walls. The gameplay falls into a loop: Drive, puzzle, quick-time event, boss, drive, etc. The driving is dull, puzzles are repetitive, and bosses are simply pointless and dull. There is very little detail, and after 15 hours in the game, you haven't even touched 90% of a map, and there's no reason to explore this area. The unused areas are uninteresting unless you enjoy watching cars driving and people moving. Insane pop-ins and pop-outs, a button-bashing combat system, and overused humor. I fail to find a redeeming aspect of this game.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap4
Jul 30, 2019
This game is absolutely stunning. However, the gameplay felt repetitive after a while. The Switch has a phenomenal selection of amazing 2d platforms, and this one just feels bland in comparison. The art direction does give this game it's own unique flair, but ultimately the gameplay was sub-par.

This game is special. This world is so atmospheric and immersive. Such a gorgeous environment and universe, that brings back nostalgic feeling. Back in the day, I loved this atmosphere. Now that those memories are 10 years old, I feel that nostalgia. Back in the day, I lived in a foreign country, and I didn't know the world around me. This game brought people together, and we would spend our nights in a bedroom, playing galaxy. This game is special, especially for me. This game was my comfort and my escape when I didn't know the world around me.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses9
Jul 29, 2019
So many games of this scale use NPCs as plot devices to put together a story. Others use annoyingly frequent cutscenes for character development. However, Fire Emblem Three Houses is the first game I've played where the NPCs are the main force driving the story forward. The characters are amazing, and character development happens through conversations. It reminds me of **** valley in that regard. Characters are deep and their emotions are genuine. The phenomenal VA makes this game absurdly immersive. I have never been a big fan of turn based combat or strategy focused games, but the combat in this game is simple enough to be enjoyed by anyone, and complex enough to be enjoyed by hardcore fans. I actually care about the characters, making battles all the more serious. I want my characters to succeed and stay alive because I can actually care about them. No other game has succeeded in that goal. The performance is solid, although the textured are low-quality. However it's hard to dwell on these low-res textures because the character models are so absolutely fantastic. I love this game so much, and chances are you will too.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe4
Feb 25, 2019
This game is just like every other new super mario bros game: bland. Let me explain... This game is often criticized for it's lack of creativity, which is valid, but it's also criticized for being in the 'New' Series. That's not valid. I believe this game deserves a 4 because it has some good gameplay, but has a distinct lack of good or new ideas. The visual style and art is borderline unacceptable for a AAA studio. Looking at a game like Tropical Freeze, we can see just how bad NSMBUD looks. Beyond this, every level in Tropical Freeze tells a story and has a purpose. In NSMBUD, every level feels like a cluster of assets with no rhyme or reason. Basically, every level could be easily created with little though, because of the distinct lack of purpose. There are so many games out there that are simply superior 2d platformers - The Shovel Knight Games (with Co-op); Tropical Freeze (with Co-op); Celeste, and Shovel Knight and Celeste are cheaper as well. If you love NSMB then by all means, enjoy this game, but if you are looking for a good 2d platformer, this is not the place to go.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas6
Jan 24, 2019
This would be a great game if it wasn't so repetitive. It really does have some great moments and phenomenal ideas. However, it seems far too often that ubisoft forgets what the word 'fun' means. Every single fight is the same, and so many of these copy/paste fights are mandatory. It overshadows the fun that I actually had while playing. The co-op is much better though, as the repetitive fights become quicker. Other glitches are frustrating as well. The same 30-second song looped for over 3 hours of gameplay. While some if this game is great, most of it is boring and repetitive.

Super Mario Odyssey9
Dec 7, 2018
Odyssey is pure joy. While not as emotionally deep as Galaxy, Odyssey is so absurdly fun. The worlds are deep and simplistic, while still maintaining a complex nature. The music is great, and the gameplay is better. Odyssey brings about that youth-like enthusiasm that we can't bring out in ourselves. Odyssey has a special whimsicality to it that will never be forgotten. YOU CAN BE A GOOMBAS!!

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate9
Dec 7, 2018
Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the culmination of Smash Bros history. Masterfully crafted for Smash fans, with all characters and then some. The fighting is fun, and rivals melee, the Spirits mode is hefty, even if it eventually becomes redundant. The music is masterful, the game is gorgeous, and the gameplay is the best it's ever been. So many maps, and unlocking the largest roster in Smash History is thrilling. Target Smash and Home Run derby will be missed, but the amount of content is somehow greater.

DOOM9
Nov 16, 2018
This game is a hellish, high-intensity battle. While there were calm sections with exploration, the entire game felt like one gigantic fight that never stopped, and that's why DOOM is amazing. The game can only be played in short spurts because of the thick atmosphere that overwhelms the player, and the action that never stops. This makes DOOM perfect for the Switch, because you can easily find a secret or kill a few enemies if you have 5 minutes to play. The deep atmosphere was genuinely scary and creates fear and discomfort. The Switch also runs the game fine enough. 30 fps was fine, and textures looked perfectly acceptable given how quickly you move at all times. In my entire play-through, the game only slowed down once, when the game froze for .5 seconds.

Astro Bears Party8
Nov 16, 2018
Astro Bears is not an ambitious game... and it's getting a lot of crap for that. The game isn't TRYING to be ambitious. It's just trying to be a fun, yet basic party game with a fun single player as well. If this game was a full-release, these negative reviews would have reason, but for a $5 game it is an absolute blast that's worth the small price.

Xenoblade Chronicles 28
Oct 14, 2018
While frustrating at times, Xenoblade 2 manages to create a world big enough and a story intricate enough to intrigue the player, especially near the end of the game. There is a masterpiece underneath a few mind numbing design choices and terrible difficulty spikes. The combat system is deep and takes time to master, while the rest of the gameplay is monotonous walking. Every single chapter is phenomenal, but each chapter has at least one terrible moment. There is so much good, but all that good comes with something terrible. However the good is so darn good and the story goes from an interesting, but relatively forgettable story to an insanely intricate political war by the end of the 8th chapter. The story was so carefully designed, and while the still animation is less than appealing, the fight cut scenes are a wonderful sight to see. If you are willing to go through a few tedious, frustrating moments, this game opens up in an incredible fashion.

Super Mario Party7
Oct 9, 2018
While the 8-10 scores are typically reserved for more ambitious titles, Super Mario Party (in it's more reserved state) does everything it intends to do perfectly. The multitude of modes is refreshing, the minigames are good, and the Mario Party gameplay is the same, classic gameplay. While more maps would be nice, the board size proved to be for the better, as it allowed for closer, more intense games. Sometimes the boards can be unfair, but that's true for any party game. The lack of boards (only 4) is disappointing, but ultimately prevents redundancy. This is the best Mario Party of the decade, and hopefully updates will keep it in that position for years to come.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove9
Oct 4, 2018
These games are all phenomenal, and deserve to be played by all. The game is challenging due to tough enemies and bosses... While it isn't as tough as Celeste, checkpoints are far and few between. The game is high-energy and has an interesting, while somewhat understated story. The character movement is smooth, with the exception of Plague Knight, who feels a bit sluggish. All around great experience filled to the brim with energetic fun.

Stardew Valley10
Oct 3, 2018
**** Valley immediately puts you into this immersive world and gives you the wheel. You can do whatever you want almost immediately, and meeting the townspeople adds to this immersion. The relationships that you can create are incredible, and truly make you feel one with the community. Then, the game lets you grow at your own pace, meaning that you don't have to farm if you don't want. There is a community center where you collect items and "beat" the game. But I fell so much in love with the world and Pelican Town, that I still haven't gotten around to this by year 3. There is never a requirement to do a certain thing, except for on holidays, where you gather with the community and just have fun hanging out. This game is so immersive and simple.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition5
Oct 3, 2018
This game gives you plenty of interesting world to explore, but it starts to feel jumbled. The combat system feels outdated, even though the game still has great moments. Skyrim just feels dull in this day and age because of games like Breath of the Wild, that open up travel with climbing and gliding. The travel in Skyrim is a chore, but getting somewhere and completing a task is fun. There is an overload of different ways to play, and Skyrim allows you to play the way you want (be a hero, a criminal, a stalker). The story of Skyrim is empty, and winning a big fight is underwhelming, but every once in a blue moon, the game can feel incredible.

Celeste10
Oct 3, 2018
Wow. This game is stunning. Games like Shovel Knight brought retro games back into the spotlight... Celeste masters this. Gorgeous and detailed pixel art mixed with tear-jerking music make this game so absurdly immersive. The story is motivating, and the gameplay is as stressful as it is rewarding. A game about climbing mountains should be hard, but this game makes you want to quit at every level. Everything is so hard and unforgiving, but there is so much motivation to beat the level and continue the story that we still finish this, and feel so rewarded when we do so. Then, after the main game, there are nearly impossible b-side levels that provide the most extreme challenges i had ever seen in a video game, until I saw the c-sides. This game is packed with so much quality gameplay that puts you to your limits. Absolute materpiece.
