Shantae: Half-Genie Hero9
Jul 29, 2018
One of the best platformers on the Vita, Shantae plays and looks great. The production level quality is brilliantly demonstrated in the visuals, music, and audio. The gameplay is well balanced, including both easy and difficult sections. The game also gives you plenty of opportunities to make use of her various form transformation dances and magic. The game can be be done in less than 10 hours, but if you want to collect all the items or look for "clues" for a better ending, it will definitely take longer. Finding secret areas and hidden items is rewarding but going back to find them can sometimes feel repetitive. The level designs are very well done, but it's quality over quantity since there is only a handful of areas to enjoy. Thankfully there are also more modes and characters to explore. Overall, I'm very happy to come across this game. If you're looking for a great platform game, this game has plenty of fun. It plays as good as it looks.

Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends - Complete Edition9

The DW8:XLCE is the definitive Dynasty Warriors experience. It takes the strengths from previous Dynasty Warriors games and improves upon them. But, yes, it's still a Dynasty Warriors game. So be prepared for officers repeating the same lines and the incredibly cheesy cutscenes. But if you can get beyond that, there is plenty of fun to be had in this addictive hack-and-slash. The shear amount of content in this game makes it an excellent value. Unlike some previous entries in the series, none of the 82 playable officers are clones of each other. They all have their own unique fighting styles, strengths, and weaknesses. And even though any officer can equip any weapon, the 2 EX combos gives the players enough incentive to use their own weapons and switch between 2 or more combos through the gameplay instead of spamming the same one over and over. The graphics in Dynasty Warriors has never been anything to write home about, but the PS4 version does offer better textures, dynamic lighting, and depth of field. While I didn’t like the depth of field very much, the game gives you the option to soften the effect or disable it altogether. But fans of the series will know that one of the most important topics in DW is the performance of the game. Does it slow down when there are many enemies on screen? What is the distance from which you can see enemy officers? Dynasty Warriors does fairly well on performance. There is absolutely no slowdown from amount of enemies and you can see them at a great distance away. However, I did notice the framerate drop some when caught in a fire attack. But thankfully, the game performs well and does not take away anything from the experience. The amount of content in the game is absolutely astounding. Not only are there 82 unique characters, there are hundreds of different weapons, including 5-star and 6-star weapons which each have special requirements to acquire. Besides that regular story mode stages, there is also a hypothetical route and bonus stages to be unlocked. Ambition mode is also great way to play the game in a different way and allows players to unlock features such as weapon tampering. All in all, you will not run out of things to do.

While this game definitely had the potential to be much better, it is still an enjoyable experience. I played this game with my wife so if you are looking for a fun multiplayer game or something you can play with the family; this is a good option for PS4 owners. There are a few bugs plaguing the game but there is nothing really game breaking. Many times, we ran into an error when we tried to pull up another profile saved on the PS4 when another player joined the game. This required me to delete the profile several times. It was incredibly frustrating to lose all the collected outfits and stickers associated with the profile. The story mode is creative and fun but it is pretty short. There is definitely enough to keep it interested and the environment and levels look beautiful. As good as the levels look, not all of them are completely fun or amazing. There are a few areas in the game that require teamwork to access and those are pretty rewarding moments. However, there are other parts of the game that actually seem harder with more people since you share lives. The new characters are fun to play with but others may not like them all. And since you spend most of the story mode unlocking them, it seems like the story ends much too soon. Creating levels and created levels is what gives this game the most life. I myself am not the creative type but I do find some of the levels other people created to be incredible fun.
