NieR: Automata - Game of the YoRHa Edition9
Apr 17, 2025
There are very few A-RPGs that I've beaten and then replayed it from the beginning. While the story itself is so-so (I was a philosophy major so the existentialism is annoying as I've studied in more depth than the story offers), what really makes NieR a 9/10 is the controls and the movement. The music also is a huge booster for this game. A definite recommend for all A-RPG lovers

Playing on the PS5. About 20 hours in, currently chapter 5. The gaming experience for me is very disconnected. I must have missed reading the book to the story, because Promto won't shut up (I don't know why he's in the game) Noctis is both emo and not emo and seems to flip between who he when ever the story is convenient. Other than Cindy's pants (which boosts how good this game is significantly), the characters feel very forced. Underwhelming game play. I'll will be running up to an item and press A, but the game will make me jump. This happens frequently, as if the game is lagging on each input so that you have to repeat actions many times. Basic mechanics being a chore, greatly reduces how good this game is. The Play Cycle, which is mostly about you being nearly forced to go to bed, destroys the illusion of an open world. The constant, "are you sure you want to be in the car now?!" is really irritable for me--as if the game is soft forcing me to play it a certain way. Drive in Car to Quest. Instant travel back to quest giver, Go to bed. The cycle seems rather narrow minded. The good part of the game is the initial feeling of driving in a car with my bros, until it's go drive some where...5 minutes...I guess I better go order food because there is LITERALLY NO GAMEPLAY for those minutes. Again, concept is interesting, but when you've repeated the game loop now 20-30 times, it's just a chore. I start quests and walk out the room because it takes so long...I mean it's a **** goes fast...right? 5/10.

Played and beat the whole game. While aspects of the game are good and grow on you over time, the vast majority of this game is a lifeless and unimpactful. It's only okay. The vast majority of side quests are mindless, the characters you can do quests for almost never have a point to it. While I completely all side quests, it's more because I like to, not that I enjoyed any of them. The story is preset, so any optional things you do, adds nothing. Very poor may to make a game. Combat is okay. It is very repetitious which is good and bad. Recycled minibosses made the game feel like a chore, since they have memorable patterns of attack. Story. It was, okay and good at parts. A lot of it was very slow and later would build up to be worthwhile. The game as a whole feels rough and had lots of filler and the story lines were aggravating at times. For example, there is a Jill side quest which I really liked, but only could be accessed towards the end of the game. The Mid main quest was entirely awful and wasted loads of time. The game's priorities were confusing to say the least. The Ending. I think the ending is good--but it's not replayable good. If not for the ending I think this game is a 4/10, as one of the worst final fantasies, but this ending is good. Finally. There was no reason to make this rated M. Woo! You added some extra blood! Wow. Great game play. You had some nudity...which had no point to it. Yay! Now we got that rated M!

This game is more re-skin of Yakuza type games without the charm of those games. There are issues which make the game constantly unfun to play. The action bar prevents you from acting, making hard battlesa filibuster to try and heal.
The story needed to remove Barret who adds nothing but a sour disposition. The lack of creativity and sticking to the original story, makes no sense when they've revamped all the mini games.
Also everything is behind a mini game. This game is like playing Mario party, except if Mario party was really bad. I was a big fan of the original FF7, but the game play is punishing if you don't do exactly how the developer wants. 50-50 as to whether to play.
Should have been the game to set a standard, but the action in the game is confusing, hard to see and without good animations by the enemies you often take loads of damage without seeing it coming. The AI is set to stand around and block, so it can feel like some bosses are just 1v1s. Really disappointed because I wanted to love this game, and I can barely like it.

3 out of 10. I stopped played about 22 hours in, because there is nothing in this game. All the content is rehashed, I have no idea who the villian is, 2 dungeons in and there's no point in continuing on. There are many issues with the entire "logic" of the game, and the characters in the game itself even comment so, repeatedly. But what really gets me isn't the generic J-Rpg style gameplay, that I'm fine with, I enjoy the gameplay, but the story and characters and that your actions almost seem to not matter at all is what bothers me. Ryuji is a delinquent and a bad person, so he spends all his time avoiding his own issues and your character just goes along with him. IRL, this person you drop as fast as possible, but in this game he's your bestie...because the universe told you so. So much of this game is, because the universe told you so. The writing is so bad, that I doubt it could pass a highschool class. I know that you need a variety of characters, but they repeat and repeat the same lines, just to fill out time. Very one dimensional with forced choices in gameplay. It reminds me of why highschoolers in real life are terrible to be around, they have no personalities, say the same thing everyday, and can't help their own glaring personal issues. This game is torture. You can skip entire scenes and the plot will not progress at all. Who ever wrote this must have made a note to repeat everything 3-4 times just incase the player forgot there are ways to reread every part of the story. Yes, you can REREAD the repeats just incase you have the attention span ****.

To be honest, I don't know if the game directly out of the disc is considered finished, as it's so badly done I don't think it's complete. The battle system isn't as good as Ocarina of time, a game made 20 years prior. It's monsters needed a lot more work, and seemed to have been rushed without much thought. Your choices don't really matter to the story, for example, you have the option to tell Anastasia she can't rejoin the team, only to have your members (who take orders from you) override you. But this game's selling point is character **** it's so heavily forced it feels awkward to play. There are no meaningful RPG elements in this game, such as upgrades or progression. Every level starts you from zero which makes your choices outside of battle pointless from a progression standpoint. ****'re not rewarded for doing the right things, but just forced to play a certain way. There are several moral standards such as traitors and black magic which are played for laughs I guess? This makes the game seem tone deaf and as if the script was not proof read or was written by a clueless intern. Something which has cultural and moral dimensions should not be ignored when a competent writer could easily present these topics without assuming his audience are mindless teenagers. (For example, instead of Anastasia shooting Reji, have her hit him with a comically large prop back stage.) Sakura never develops as a character and never progresses beyond her basic level. She loses her development anytime the plot needs pointless drama. She even undoes her own character development later on in the game when she goes back into time. Any chance of being epic or even relatable is thrown out because, she has to maintain the same complexes. Happy until a problem arises, then cry a lot, then go, "I care about people" and win the day! Hatsuho and Clarice are both excellent characters, which is the only reason this game gets a 3 instead of a 2. They show how lighthearted progression can easily be done. Azami is a frick'n ninja who can summon monsters. Except this does nothing for the game and never means anything. Azami is capable of much more than she is allowed to **** ever made this game cannot think outside of very bland anime tropes. Why create possibilities which are interesting only to throw them out? Again, utter incompetence There are 4 series of mecha **** not make more? Why not add 4 more chapters to the game and develop things more? This game feels rushed, played way to safe and is inconsistent in it's tone. For example, the Shanghai team runs a restaurant, which is cool, so why don't the other teams do stuff? Again, it's played off for laughs instead of actually developing characters. (also why can I get them to join me? seriously make this game into a waifu collector) Finally, Kamiyama, the main character. He is shown to be worthless and a coward, but for some reason he's made Captain. The tone of the game doesn't make sense at all, it's as if Kamiyama isn't allowed to be himself and is a slave to the story. Sometimes he's not attracted to girls then he's leering at them, like how a 14 year old things about women. Then the whole world is about to end and we have sacrifice people to save Tokyo. This game sometimes feels more like a Shonen Manga, wherein saying "friendship" and "try harder" over and over again replaces character development.

Terrible. The idea of the game 5v5 in a small map forces you to play the way the game designers want. Unlike League, your individual skill can't carry, you can't customize your build--there are no items--, there is little rewards to practice, and it feels like it was made specifically for people who can't think for themselves and create unique play styles. If you get stuck with a bad team. Don't try, because the enemy literally has to throw for you to have a chance. And if you are carrying your team and going 10 kills for zero deaths, the exp system doesn't reward you. Mindless, stupid, devoid of any coherent meta. I give it 2 stars for 2 reasons. Sexy Butts and the concept of gathering all the different heroes and making them fight. The idea is good, but you'd have to put your brain on acid to like it.
