Love this game on PS5 (it was not good on PS4). Have really enjoyed HUT, the updates, and graphics. Still, some changes can be made to improve cut-scenes, animations, etc….

Updated review: I’ve now upgraded to a PS5 and have been playing ‘22. The game seems to have been built for PS5 and not PS4. I love it on PS5! It took some getting used to but now I think it’s the best NHL game to date and I’m looking forward to 23 on PS5 as well. I am skewing my new score from a 1 to a 10 because of the system difference and all the bad reviews. — Early review for PS4: The graphics are far, far worse than the really good graphics in 21. Frostbite must mean slow and dying. The menus are slower, the cards are uglier, the gameplay is worse by a mile than 21 and the cut shots and camera angles are bizarre.

The reason I give this a 1 is because I'm comparing it to NHL Legacy for PS3. It's not a zero because it exists, so is something. The gameplay that made NHL so fun on the legacy systems PS3 and Xbox 360 is not there. The game isn't fun to play, despite good looking advertisements. For me, NHL Legacy HUT is where the action is to be found.

It's time now for PS3 hockey gamers to band together and decide which NHL game to stick with. It should be this one. Best gameplay for an NHL game hands down. In my opinion this clearly has the edge over NHL for new consoles. It's a great balance between simulation and arcade-style action that has been nailed on the head. Remember GamePro reviews? I would mostly decide on games by looking at fun factor. This gets the max fun factor score of 5 from me. Skating and collisions are more nuanced. There are noticeably fewer tripping penalties from poke checks which is welcome. Slight changes in many areas seem to be throughout which make for a better game. The commentary is significantly improved over NHL 15, which was quite awkward and in my opinion actually so bad that after purchase I quickly sold my copy of NHL 15 and returned to playing NHL 14. Legacy Edition still has a more relaxed announcing approach than NHL 14 and earlier NHL games did in that it doesn't focus so heavily on dropping every puck carrier's name in an authoritative tone. It's already easy to tell that the EA Trax are much more friendly to longterm use than in the past. Like FIFA, the genre of music is more chill which is nice when exploring HUT and other modes while not playing a game. Since I'm not planning to buy a next-gen console, it's also nice to have the option to import my own audio into the menus. In terms of sound overall, this game is put together very nicely. The menus still haven't changed much from NHL 14, aside from the Stanley Cup appearing top left in the main menu rather than a player from your favorite team. This minutiae seems to cheapen the work that EA actually did put into the game because it looks like a copy and paste. The menu may not be ideal for getting to some of your favorite modes like EASHL, NHL Moments Live, or heads up online play but in EA's defense, if it's not broken, why fix it? Clearly a lot of work has been put into NHL Moments Live. There's a lot of good content there. I just played the first moment as Duncan Keith, preserving the Hawks' shutout, and the Conn Smythe & Stanley Cup presentation that follow winning that moment are sweet. I look forward to seeing new special items in HUT as the season moves along. Will a Winter Classic Stadium become an available item? Will there be a milestone card for Brian Leetch? Time will tell. NHL Moments Live -- stacked full for last season -- looks primed for pampering this season. If we're all onboard, it's going to be much easier to find online matches in Legacy Edition than in any other previous NHL game. It might as well be. This is the disc to own for PS3 hockey.

I had watched a gameplay video on youtube before buying and it looked like it could be worth the under $10 price based on what I read in the first user's review. My review is for the vita version so not sure how experiences will differ between platforms but on the vita I feel responsive mechanics, forgiving and intelligent smoothness, exciting, and just plain FUN. It's actually feels like the best mechanics of any game like Vigilante 8 genre I've ever played. It was intuitive for me to pick up after one glance at the control scheme in options. I look forward to unlocks and challenges with such a solid fluidity in play. If you are a vita owner, I highly recommend you get yourself a hand grip if you don't already, mine does not have triggers so I can't comment on those but it makes playing games a better experience. Perhaps Sony could construct and release an offer to play online with other vita owners.

There should be a rewind option during the credits, the people who made this are amazing. A good reason to buy or own a ps3. If you liked Grand Theft Auto IV and are waiting for V check this game out and be on the side of the law for a change. Ground combat system like Arkham games, solid vehicle mechanics too.
