Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration7
Feb 24, 2021
I really enjoyed the first entry to the reboot trilogy, Tomb Raider. This second entry feels like the even bigger budget sequel with frantic and elaborate escape sequences, but didn't add much substance. Lara's set of weapons and skills is tiny, so each upgrade feels negligible. Many upgrades felt like more **** quality of life improvement than an unlocked skill (unlock / heal / reload / etc faster), which would have made the game feel more enjoyable from the start. I loved the beautifully designed tomb puzzles, and of course the scenery and level design is spectacular. However, the climbing got a bit samey after a while. The 3D model artefacts are engaging, but the narrated documents were tiring. I thought the back stories they told were fantastic, but I sped read through the dialogue instead of listening to the decent voice acting, as there were SO many of them to listen to. It just really broke up the pacing too often. Why couldn't the narrations play in the background while exploring? They could be strategically placed so as not to interfere with other in game sounds. Great looking action puzzler that needs more puzzles.

Some of the best gaming fun I've had in years. Pure unadulterated audio-visual joy! My daughter was entertained no end even while watching me fail dozens of times. Such a great comic sensibility, including many gameplay scenes which made me laugh our loud. Better than the previous game Rayman Origins in every way.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners8

Just the right amount of challenge and long enough to satisfy me but keep me wanting more. Very polished but extremely simple mechanics. Very 'small' story set in the Walking Dead world.

Incredibly polished and just the right length to keep me wanting more. Made me feel super smart even though the only reason I could finish the game was due to the fantastic art direction, sound and game design.
