The opinion on this film may just come down to life point. The main character is unlikeable and very entitled. She is a perfect caricature of a millennial. I don't think this was done as a parody, it comes off like Larson actually thought this would be a good protagonist. A 25 year old I work with thought it was the best movie ever. Everyone else I've talked to thought it was terrible. Turns out what works as acting in a psychological thriller about being locked in a room doesn't translate to any other acting . . . or directing. Larson is overrated and wastes a great supporting cast.

Captain Marvel4
Mar 8, 2019
This movie isn't a complete train wreck that deserves total score. There are some good visuals, the villain is solid, young Fury is fun to see, and hey that cat was a solid addition. It also isn't a good film. Very few of the professional reviews are praising Larson in the role. That is because she just isn't that good. "Hey she is an Oscar winner, you can't say that." Just because she won an award for a very particular role doesn't mean every single thing she does is gold. She was miscast for this role. The concerns about her having a flat persona on screen sort of played out. There are solid elements to the film, but when your lead isn't one of them reviewers should be ashamed for giving the movie 8,9,10 ratings. I'm not hating on the film because "it has a strong female character." I just calling a spade a spade. If this had a male character as the lead many reviewers would point out this is standard fare that Marvel turns out each year and is nothing special. The film is fine. It is much closer to Thor Dark World than it is to Winter Soldier.

Robin Hood2

When I saw all of the bad reviews I thought "the movie can't really be that bad." I was wrong. So wrong. There was clearly a lot of money dumped into this film. Some of the visuals were downright amazing. I also appreciated how it tried to portray soldiers akin to what occurs in the middle east now. I mean I appreciated how they were swinging big and that it was an interesting choice. Everything else in the film is a disaster. The pacing and plot are just terrible. None of the set pieces pay off. I was also very annoyed at how they were very heavy handed about a parallel to the US being in the middle east being evil and how the church is just a bunch of evil white men. For the record the Crusades were a response to invasions by muslims, not aggression by Christians into Muslim lands. It was clear that the script was written by a bunch of hacks with liberal views thinking they were clever. Instead you got a poor film and a wasted cast.

La La Land4
Jan 31, 2019
I still don't get why people went crazy over this film. It was . . . fine. The whole end sequence made me angry. They stopped dating because she was going to take a job away for a couple months? It wasn't like she was going there permanently. They have phones. And planes. He didn't have to give up his job. He could go visit her off and on until the film was done. Instead they just throw in the towel and she ends up with someone else and you get the "might have been sequence." Just give us the happy ending. The bittersweet one was just the director trying to get Oscar bait. It didn't make the movie better. Also in no way did she deserve an Oscar for her performance. It was good, but nothing different than any of her other movies. If anything Ryan was the standout role.

Aliens10
Jan 31, 2019
This is one of my all time favorite movies. In high school and college I watched this every couple months. It is infinitely quotable, has a great score, and a ton of memorable characters. No subsequent movie in the Alien franchise has come close to this masterpiece.

Avengers: Infinity War6
Jan 28, 2019
The film is an enjoyable ride but . . . you know that the ending isn't going to stick. Since it is part 1 of 2, you know Thanos is going to win. If he didn't there wouldn't be a second film. Marvel doesn't even pretend any deaths have consequences though. People that have "died" in part 1 are in trailers for subsequent films (cough Spiderman). So meh. It isn't some great magnum opus like reviewers want to make you think. It is a mismash of action pieces against CG villains and over the top acting just like all other Marvel films.

Aquaman9
Jan 28, 2019
I'm not sure what the professional reviewers are thinking. They give ever Marvel/Disney movie that comes out incredibly high marks no matter how much of a stinker (cough The Last Jedi) the film is. Is Aquaman perfect? Of course not. Is it a fun filled romp? Heck yes it is. Jason Momoa was a great casting choice. Aquaman is a campy hero. He isn't the first hero I'd pick to tell a compelling story. Still, this is by far DC's best film. It is better than Wonder Woman (you know the last 20 minutes of WW was garbage). The visuals in this film are amazing. Momoa is fun, and Amber Heard's Mera is a badass in her own right. Just a very enjoyable film.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation6
Jan 28, 2019
I really liked the first movie and the second was decent. This one suffers as I find Drac is better in small doses. It is still an enjoyable, and family friendly, movie. The visuals are also very impressive. In some ways there are just too many characters. It would have been better if some of the background characters stayed in the background and had less screen time. So it is overall an okay, but just okay movie.

Molly's Game3
May 22, 2018
I don't know how this movie is getting such high reviews. It is well acted but . . . well it is a terrible story. Molly Bloom is a self centered, terrible human being. She profits off of gambling addicts, does drugs, and is a criminal. Her whole redeeming point is that she doesn't beat up people that owe her money. That is it. I going to guess that most of the positive reviews are only because Jessica Chastain is the lead . Kevin Costner also has a memorable turn in the film as Bloom's dad. Idris Elba also does a bang up job. Still, neither my wife or I cared what happened to Molly. Chastain has an issue that she comes off smarmy and as a know it all in every scene. I wanted her to go to jail.

Lady Bird6
Mar 28, 2018
I went into Lady Bird after all of the hype. The movie is interesting. I would say that all of the actors and actresses do a really nice job playing the roles they have been given. The hard part is that some of the characters are quite unlikeable. Lady Bird is just all over the place. She is self entitled, selfish, and just straight up weird. Saoirse Ronan is a great actress, but I often was taken out of scenes because she is clearly so much older than the role she is playing. I know 20 year olds routinely play high school kids, but something about her appearance makes her look even older. The movie also doesn't really have a plot. It is a good snapshot of what it is like to be Lady Bird. The movie just doesn't deserve the 9 and 10's critics have been giving it. I chalk that up to a couple factors. One is that Lady Bird is obsessed with New York and moving to where there is more "culture." This feeds into the elitist mindset of many critics. The other is that the main character and the director are women. Again, most reviewers have a liberal bias and this will buy the movie a couple extra good will points.

Wonder Woman6
Feb 9, 2018
The film was a solid flick, but no where as good as most of the reviews say it is. Gal Gadot does a great job as does most of the cast. The film just has a terrible 3rd arc with lots of plot holes.

Despicable Me 35
Jan 31, 2018
This film was . . . okay? A good summary of the quality is that while we were watching it by wife and I both end up splitting our attention to do something else. It was sort of amusing. Balthazar Brett was hilarious. The rest of it was . . . bad. There are worse ways to spend an hour and a half, but there are also a lot of ways that time could be better spent.

Logan Lucky9
Jan 31, 2018
Jimmy Logan isn't having very much luck. His pro football career was ruined when he blew out his knee. His brother Clyde lost his hand to an explosion while serving in the military. With nothing left to lose they hatch a plan to steal money from the vault of the Charlotte Speedway. What follows is a hillbilly caper. I have to say I found this movie to be very enjoyable. Daniel Craig in particular has to be commended for being virtually unrecognizable. It was a very enjoyable two hours spent watching the film.

Spider-Man: Homecoming8
Oct 23, 2017
I went into this movie with mixed expectations. Tom Holland did a great job in his introduction in Civil War. Fox movies though are often hit and miss. I have to say the movie is great. Tom Holland owns the role of Peter Parker. Michael Keaton is also just fantastic as the Vulture. Every scene he is in just pops off of the screen. Marisa Tomei is a great take on Aunt May. Robert Downey Jr. is his typical self, smarmy and sort of funny. In general the movie captured a good mixture of suspense, action, and humor. All of the background characters (with one exception) were amazingly well cast. Often times actors are playing rolls that don't make a lot of sense given their profiles (e.g. Donald Glover's cameo) but they are all shout outs to characters with bigger roles in the Spiderverse. The only casting/plot character that I disliked was Zendaya as Michelle. Her character isn't funny. She is creepy and annoying as heck. She is basically stalking Peter, rude, and just sort of a nasty smarmy person. The reveal at the end that she is "MJ" is also just terrible. They positive press this is getting is just due to the fact that she isn't white. The media goes bonkers any time there is a "strong" female character or a white character is recast as non-white. Since when is "strong" code for snarky? I do not want to see her character get more screen time.

Battle of the Sexes1
Oct 4, 2017
This movie is exactly what you think it is going to be going in. Hey look a lesbian beats down a chauvinistic man. Hugs all around for empowerment. Lets skirt by the fact he was 25 years older than her, started with one fault, had to play doubles rather than singles courts, and likely threw the match to erase gambling debts. It is more important to serve a narrative than tell the accurate story.

Rough Night3
Oct 4, 2017
There is some talent in this movie, but the script and writing are just terrible. The film is a mixture of drunken bachelorette tropes mixed with bachelor party tropes. Hey they accidentally kill a stripper at the party. Their attempts to deal with the dead body are stolen from Very Bad Things and Weekend and Bernies. The director/writer Lucia Aniello also has to throw in some man bashing and ham fisted feminism. The male characters in the movie as emasculated, effeminates who oh and ah over wine tastings. The other men are criminals. There is also a plot of two of the friends being former lesbian lovers who reunite. Perhaps all of the flaws could be overlooked if you gave a **** about any of the women. Only Kate McKinnon's character is even remotely likable and brings the most humor to the group. The rest of them are selfish, egotistical, jerks. They also never get any sort of comeuppance. Their multiple murders just get washed away with some hand waving and everything keeps going. There is no remorse, no real growth, no humor. Thumbs down.

The Accountant8

I wasn't sure what this movie was about going in. I wasn't sure if Ben Affleck's character was going to be a good guy or a bad guy. After seeing it he is mostly a good guy, but with some pretty dark shades. Overall I really enjoyed the movie. Some people may not like the fact that Affleck's character has Aspergers and a number of psychological traits that are not always consistently written. Still, I liked all of the actors and thought they did a good job with the material.

Masterminds1

I watched this movie on a plane ride back from Scotland. I think I would have rather than plane crashed into the sea. This movie is a series of bad SNL skits strung together back to back. None of the characters make sense, there really isn't a plot, and the acting is subpar.

Passengers3
May 18, 2017
My fiancee and I are both big fans of Chris Pratt. We are mixed on Jennifer Lawrence. We thought this movie would be fun, with the two of them racing to save the ship. There are only four characters in the entire film. Pratt, Lawrence, Michael Sheen, and Laurence Fishburne. The latter two have modest roles in the film. The plot to save the ship encompasses only the last thirty minutes of the movie. The other 1.5 hours deals with the Pratt and Lawrence having to deal with being the only two people awake on the ship. It is . . . droll. I felt that I was sitting through the 90 years of their journey just watching the film. There are some interesting moral questions raised, but the film was just flat. The production level and filmwork are quite good, the story is just terrible. I just wanted them to die so the film would be over. I didn't care. Lawrence in particular is sort of a spoiled, rich, **** of a character. Take a pass on watching this film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story7
Dec 19, 2016
I will preface this by stating that I did not like TFA at all. I thought it was a complete retread of previous movies. I went into Rouge One with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. Most of the story is quite predictable, you can see almost all of the twists and turns coming from a mile away. The characters are ok, but not great. This is both a plus and a minus to the movie. Part of the reason I did not like TFA is that the characters were overly dominant to the movie. If you didn't like Finn or Rey the movie was hard to watch. None of the Rogue One characters stand out either way. No one really bothered me, but I also didn't care about any of them in any significant way. The movie is almost a paint by numbers remake of a half dozen WWII movies. I however liked this to a certain degree. I left thinking the movie did its job. It told a one off story that was engaging but not over the top. It gave me some space battles and ground fights that I could enjoy without setting up a series of other new movies (boo TFA).

Bad Moms0
Nov 29, 2016
I watched Bad Moms with my fiancee. I was mildly excited for the movie as I am a big fan of all three leads. All three women do a fine job with the script they have been given. It is only because of my appreciation of these three that I even gave this movie a four. Their strong screen presences (particularly Kristen Bell's weird stay at home mom) carried what is otherwise a dumpster fire of a film. First lets just get the main message of the film out of the way. It repeatedly depicts that men are bumbling, incompetent, and narcissistic. Even Amy's (Mila Kunis) son is presented as a spoiled brat while her daughter is a hard working but stressed achiever. The only male presented in an even slightly positive light is a widower who is just a vapid body for Amy to have rebound sex with. No men are shown at the PTA meetings, taking care of their kids, or doing anything remotely parental. If some rampant sexist depictions of women were done in the name of "comedy" the movie would universally be panned. Instead the film continues the growing trend that it is okay to depict (white) men as buffoons. The rest of the plot of the movie is basically paint by numbers. There are nuanced characters or any real insight besides "moms are the best but society demands too much of them."

Sausage Party4
Nov 20, 2016
I had no idea what this movie was about when I saw the posters appear. I eventually got a brief synopsis of the film. I thought it would be raunchy, but amusing. I rented it from my local library. In the world of Sausage Party all food items are alive and can move around, humans just can't see them. THe grocery story items believe that when humans taken them home they go off into paradise. Frank is a good old fashioned hot dog that just wants to be taken home along with a pack of buns featuring his girlfriend Brenda. He wants to put his sausage all up in her bun. After a jar of honey **** is returned to the store with insight into the real world (food gets eaten) there is an accident that spills Frank, Brenda, and other assorted food out into the store aisles. They try to navigate the store and along the way find out about the great beyond. Oh yeah and **** **** **** ****ity **** There are some interesting sight gags in the film and the animation is well done. Most of the jokes are beyond juvenile and you can see them coming from a mile away. I still enjoyed the first 75% of the movie though. Eventually I wondered how they would resolve the main issue (humans are eating food but the food is alive). They don't really, the movie just sort of goes off of the rails. I guess this is expected due to the absurd nature of the movie. The food also really wants to get funky. There is a giant food orgy at the end. Food characters who are clearly designed to be same sex get it on. Group sex. Just lots of really raunchy stuff. Oh wow you have the two male(ish) Jewish and Arab foods who bickered all movie get down and have sex? Wow what an enlightened movie. The food orgy was funny for about 10 seconds but kept going and going and going. This was the hole point of the movie. Seth Rogan said "hmm how can I show food ****ing" and then the rest was built up from there. Blah.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising7
Nov 2, 2016
This movie was about par with the first one. You have a lot of the same humor and back and forth between Seth Rogan and the sorority house that you got with the fraternity in the first one. It wasn't the best comedy I have ever seen, but I enjoyed it.

Ghostbusters2
Nov 2, 2016
My fiancee and I got this movie from the library. We were watching it leading up to Halloween. We thought it would be kind of a fun way to be in the spirit. I knew there were very mixed reviews of the film so I went in with mixed expectations but an open mind. An hour into the film my fiancee suggested we turn the movie off and go get a drink instead. We finished the film two days later. She lamented that she would never get those two hours of her life back (the movie is much too long), and that the film was terrible. I completely agree with her. There is talent in the film. I won't say there is a LOT of talent, but more than what this terrible script provided. The plot makes no sense even for a movie about ghosts. The antagonist has no actual motivation that makes any sense. The four leads seem incompetent in every way. Worst of all the film isn't funny. I meant at all. It was a slot to get through. On top of it they straight up troll the audience by having bits on anti-female themes (youtube comments and the main antagonist). The cameos by the original crew were forced and added nothing to the plot. Kate McKinnon as Holtzmann is just terrible. There group will just be walking, and there she is bopping around in the background, looking straight into the camera. She isn't funny, she is annoying. Reviews and articles praising Ghostbusters (and McKinnon in particular) must not have seen the film I (and most users) saw. Instead they are seeing a film filtered through social justice warrior lenses where the fact that the main characters are all women (and Holtzmann is gay according to the director) means more than the quality of the film. If the film spent more time, you know, working on a script and directing than fighting social media fires perhaps this wouldn't be the dumpster fire that it is. Lets throw out a couple other tidbits. Leslie Jones's character seems like a racist stereotype. The only joke about Hemsworth (who is hilarious) is that he is hot but dumb. Would reviewers be ok if it was a super hot female who was a ditz? The double standards are astounding.

Gods of Egypt7
Aug 23, 2016
I went into this movie with pretty low expectations. I rented it from the library so there was absolutely no cost for me other than time spent watching the movie. I have to say it wasn't terrible. The CGI effects are outdated, but other than that it was ok. Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau both do excellent jobs. Brenton Thwaites is utterly forgettable as Bek. Everyone else does a fine job as secondary background characters. The movie is entertaining rather than a work of art. I enjoyed this much more than I did Suicide Squad, Batman vs. Superman, or heck even Civil War. I think the movie took an inordinate amount of flak because the lead characters were white and there were cries of "white washing." For the record 1) classical Egyptians (or modern ones for that matter) were never black. 2) Egypt was conquered by Alexander the Great so a large chunk of Egyptian rulers (e.g. Cleopatra) were actually of Greek decent (i.e. white). I mean should more of the actors have been brown or Mediterranean hued? Sure. Is that what should define a movie? Not really. Judge it on its merits.

Suicide Squad3
Aug 17, 2016
I can't believe I am going to say this, I thought Batman vs. Superman was better than Suicide Squad. What the heck is wrong with DC that they keep turning out crappy movie after crappy movie. The plot is beyond ridiculous. The Suicide Squad doesn't go up against world ending magical gods. They do the job that no one else can do because it is down and dirty. I for for **** sake their skills are are bunch of melee weapons, one guy who is strong and has alligator skin (but is only 6 feet tall . . .), a couple guys who can shoot, and one guy who can manipulate fire. It is just the wrong story line for them. They spent a ton of money on the film. It looks good. Except for Killer Croc. Instead of a monstrous man, he is a normal sized dude with scaly skin. Just terrible. The Joker didn't do it for me either. Crazy prison tats and just psychotic. Harley Quinn was hot, but that was it. They made too big a deal of her. Overall the script was baffling and a complete misfire.

X-Men: Apocalypse5
Jun 8, 2016
Apocalypse has always been one of my favorite villains from the comics. As a result I initially was quite excited about this movie. Early stills and footage made me hesitant. He is a character that could be quite hard to adapt to the big screen. Unfortunately that is exactly what happens here. His power level varies wildly from scene to scene to the point where he should literally be able to do anything. Oscar Issac and their choice of makeup costume also doesn't convey the appropriate screen presence. He should be menacing and dominant the scenes he is in. That just doesn't happen. The second major problem is that this movie is much closer to Last Stand than First Class. Besides costume choices, there is no real connection that this movie is set in the 80's. There is also way too much mutant bloat. Yet again Angel is poorly done, Psychlocke is a nonentity, and Havock is killed in a ridiculous way (wtf did Beast put in that jet engine). The movie, and franchise suffers by having Mystique be the main lead. I just don't think she is that good of a character. Jennifer Lawrence is attractive and in other movies (Silver Linings Playbook) I have found her to be outstanding. Mystique is just flat to me. Oh and Dark Phoenix is clearly the next story. Boo. I am not invested enough in her character for that story to carry a whole movie. Quicksilver is great as always. Beast is decent. I liked Storm as well. Overall though the movie was just eh.

Trainwreck5
Dec 22, 2015
Instead of watching this movie just go watch Amy's stand up. I am a fan of Amy Schumer and enjoy both her stand up and her TV show. I had seen generally positive reviews of the movie and my girlfriend and I were both excited to watch it. It seemed like a perfect movie that could have a balance of both comedy and romance. The movie follows Amy whose main claim to fame in the movie is that she is a slut. She meets Bill Hader's character, and decides being a slut isn't all that it is cracked up to be. The general plot and final outcome (spoiler they find love!) was never in doubt. I was just hoping that going from points A to B in the movie would be entertaining. It was not. There are points of humor in the film, but that are few and far between. Most of the film is just plodding and drags out. There is a cheer leading scene at the end that makes absolutely no sense and just drags on. There is nothing novel or interesting about the movie.

Feb 27, 2015
I saw Horrible Bosses and was pleasantly surprised by the film. I went into Horrible Bosses 2 with slightly lower expectations. These lower expectations were thoroughly met. The film is just eh. It wasn't horrible, but I found myself just wading through the film. There wasn't a joke done in this movie that wasn't done better in the first. Rent the movie if you are looking for a time killer, but go in knowing it is just an amusing 1.5 hours.

Big Hero 68
Feb 27, 2015
Big Hero 6 is an animated movie that is enjoyable for both older kids as well as adults. The animation is clean and very aesthetically pleasing. The plot is a bit predictable but still enjoyable. The highlight of the film is Baxmax, a robot designed to be a medical helper. Almost all of the humor is derived from this marshmallow like robot. The background characters have distinct visual elements, but really no character development at all. Still I enjoyed the movie and it is worth checking out through your local library.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies4
Dec 22, 2014
I remember reading the Hobbit when I was a kid. I love the wonder and sense of adventure the book contained. This sense carried over to the Animated Hobbit film that I still love to this day. Watching these three movies has been more of a chore than anything else. I entered the first movie with such hope. Instead of joy I just keep hitting scenes thinking "oh wow how can he screw up this time." This feeling extended to the final film. I don't need Thorin facing off in a duel on an icy river. I don't need an interracial love triangle with elves and dwarves. Smaug was great, but that was about it. It is sad that what could have been turned into these three drawn out stories with bad CG, horrible plot added in, and slop shod directing. I will be reading the Hobbit again over Christmas to wash the bad taste out of my mouth.

Friends with Kids3
Mar 20, 2012
The movie starts out promising but falls flat. There is not a scene in the movie that is not predictable. There are also some anti-religious statements thrown in that do not further the plot but just serve as a way for the writer (and star) to push their own liberal views.

John Carter10
Mar 20, 2012
The film is exactly what you expect going in. There is a decent plot supplemented by gorgeous backgrounds and the occasional action scene. Shakespeare this is not, but is a genuine good time with its mixture of humor, scifi, and western themes.
