Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

With plenty of laughs, truly dazzling animation, and some more of the franchise’s signature dance sequences, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is a summer treat worth savoring, and a reminder that if we can see past our differences, we’ll find we’re not that different after all.

The harmless high jinks all go down easily enough without being particularly memorable or pushing the art form past the expected.

It’s a pleasant mini-break that should keep little monsters quiet for a while, and a welcome excuse to hide in the crypt-like cool of your local multiplex’s air-conditioning.

The’re not a lot of momentum to Hotel Transylvania 3; this is a children’s film after all. But the character and location designs are inventive and appealing, and there are several memorable set pieces, including a wordless scuba diving sequence that draws heavy inspiration from classic Warner Bros. cartoons.

Genndy Tartakovsky brings back all the fan favorites from the previous two films and sets them all on an overcrowded, doomed cruise, but the thin plot feels less engaging than the previous films and the jokes less inspired.

The scenes of Dracula befuddled by a mobile phone were familiar; those in which the vampire’s garlic “intolerance” preludes a flatulence joke predictable. Returning a third time as director, Genndy Tartakovsky lends his usual graphic savvy, providing a not-quite-saving grace.

It’s just the jokes that aren’t funny — not even to the supposedly undemanding (very young) audience these films are tailored to.

While being a fan of the first film, the second disappointed a lot until this entry to the Monster saga came out. I couldn't watch all of it, not one thing I found funny (unsurprisingly it is for kids). The addition to the cast of Kathryn Hahn and Jim Gaffigan were both awful the former being a voice I cannot stand. This particular film lacked what the original had, unfunny moments to make a kid fall asleep and I hope the monsters go back on that boat and sail away, sail away, sail away.... forever.
