Final Fantasy XVI10
Sep 7, 2023
I played the first Final Fantasy games when they came out. When they stopped getting released on Nintendo consoles I had no access to them. Have played the newer ones on Playstation and I have to say that this one is the best of the newer games (after FF10). The music, the graphics, the story, the cadence... everything about this game is Final Fantasy. Very polished and enjoyable. There are lots of cut scenes, which I normally don't like, but they outdid themselves on these and I actually watched them.

This time around they made the game truly addictive and replayable. If you were to compare it briefly to the wiiU version to say it's worth buying it again I would say brighter and not fuzzy. What a difference between the two. I used to think the wiiU version was stunning and now it's painful to look at. Beyond that there are multiple battle modes, new players, new items etc. They finally nailed it Love this game so much. See you online!

I like this game so much. It's the first addictive game I've played from the series since Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I would have given the game a solid 10/10 if it was 3D. Since it doesn't use the 3D I am knocking off a full point because it's disappointing. Must like repetitive battles to enjoy this game as much as I did.

I tried watching a stream to see if it was something I could get into and thought maybe there was too much dialogue. Now that I've been playing it I don't notice the dialogue. You can skip through some of the more boring parts. After playing Breath of the Wild it was hard to learn a new control scheme for basically the same mechanics. Solid story and great graphics. The music is serious most of the time. My only issue is that some of the lighting effects are a little too orange sometimes.

Because it has roguelike elements it can be brutally hard at times. The more I play the better I get. I love the items, even though I have no idea what most of them do. I like that this game is portable because runs don't take up too much time... the only drawback is if you scream in public from an intense encounter with some fast moving erratic thing you may get some severe looks. Most enemies I wouldn't say are hard because once you figure out how to kill them they aren't so bad, so there is a huge learning curve. The learning isn't hard though and if anything some of the bad guys are annoying. I will get replay value out of this game. Although it is rated M I've seen much worse on television. There is a daily run posted online and you can compete to see how you stack up against other players around the world.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild10
Mar 11, 2017
This is the finest crafted game I have ever played. There is so much attention to detail it is truly awe inspiring. It never gets stale or boring as there is a wonderful variety of baddies and weapon sets without feeling too overwhelmed. You are allowed to do whatever you want and go at your own pace. The story is simple enough and unfolds as you progress organically towards saving Zelda. It is easy to get sidetracked by the fun side quests and it almost never seems like it is too hard, even though some of the puzzles can be complex and take more time than others; it never feels like a chore. I love the atmosphere in Breath of the Wild and as a long time fan of the series I am very happy to have not been disappointed. The music, the art style, the tight controls all lend themselves to a game that is accessible to all players. In the weeks leading up to it I played the original Legend of Zelda and while technology has advanced in years, this iconic series has remained loyal to it's creation. Highly recommended.

I have no idea what to do in this "game" and find the graphics very dull. The digging gets tired very quickly. The enemies always kill you, especially the ones with the bow and arrows and you can't see where they are because the graphics are SO bad. In the mode where you get to play with all the items it's overwhelming and when you turn enemies off it's boring. I appreciate that it's open world and sandbox and got a little creative with it but can't understand why I paid as much as I did for it. And now they want more money for DLC. Not gonna happen!

Yoshi's Woolly World10
Oct 17, 2015
The game is super adorable. It's very creative and the visuals are stunning. The jump/flutter mechanic is flawless, when in alot of indie platform games you have to be very precise with your jump (looking at you Shovel Knight) and the flow of the levels is always very smooth. The wool you are supposed to collect is always carefully hidden and it is a real challenge to search them all out. They unlock the cutest patterned Yoshi's and it really drives you to want to find them all. Expect to replay levels and still have a great time!

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars10
Aug 19, 2015
This game delivers everything a Mario vs. Donkey Kong could offer and then some! Level editing and sharing take it to a new level and I love the HD graphics. I think it's amazing that it comes with the 3DS version and your game is transferable, making it easy to go portable if you are on the move. This has been holding me over until Super Mario Maker comes out. Excellent level design and I enjoy the tipping stars aspect. The music is wonderful also.

This is more of a learning program than a game, although there are some playful elements like uploading your drawings to social media. The lessons are very informative and teach you how to use the various tools provided. I found the pencil lessons very useful as I never knew exactly how to use them in a practical way as the softness and hardness provide different techniques. I would almost say this is a perfect teaching tool because it also has a tactile feeling with the sounds the pencil makes on the paper, however sometimes the shading can be tricky and not so precise, often over powered and when you go to erase it goes completely white. The smudger is also very tricky to use, as expected this is digital drawing and harder to control than in reality, but does teach you the techniques.

I would like to point out some simple facts about the general ratings. The media ratings are severely limited. For example on the first page of an online search I found at least two large and very accessible reviews of the game written by TIME magazine and the Toronto Star newspaper. Both gave it a 10/10. Also, 48 of the negative scores, only 9 have dared to leave a review. Click on their names and expose that they have only ever left one review in their entire history of being on Metacritic, so I call Troll on that. In my original review I wanted to stress that I'm not interested in shooter games, and especially not interested in voice chat option in any game because in my experience it has been mostly annoying listening to racist, misogynist, and homophobic slurs, and/or being told where to go and what to do by a complete stranger. What makes the lack of voice chat succeed even more is that the matches are extremely short, they are always with random people, the game play is so simple and manic there is no way of guessing the other team's moves and then there is the ability to use the touch pad to launch yourself to a player who taps the commands, "C'mon" or "Booyah"... what other communication does someone need? It's not like a shooter at all, it's more like capture the flag aka Turf War. You don't get points for shooting the other players, just covering Turf. Also, I want to add that this is the first time I have ever felt like the game pad has been put to great use with the motion controls adding superior aiming and a sense of immersion that has me totally addicted. What most reviewers also don't say much about is the single player mode where it sometimes feels like a 3D platformer along the lines of the Mario Galaxy series, which are pretty huge boots to fill! So combined with the Ranked Battle mode, the General Mode, the General Mode with friends, the local two player mode, and the single player adventure, I'd say we got the game of the year right here!

New Words With Friends2
May 12, 2015
I played this game with an online helper and beat everyone playing because of the most insane words it generated for me. I could not play this game without the generator because there are just too many B.S. words that are allowed by the game's dictionary. Call me traditional, but real Scrabble is way more fun. If you are looking for Scrabble this game will make you mad.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft3
May 12, 2015
This game gets a 93 by 16 critics and a 72 from 100+ users. I'm with the users, only I would give it a much lower score. I saw this game on the Video Game Awards show win Game of the Year and thought I should try it. At first it reminded me of Magic the Gathering, only simplified so it was easy to get into. I tried to build up my characters and decks. They introduced a new deck. There were way too many cards flying around. It felt like I was grinding to level up and get more cards. I admittedly spent money on the game, but never got a great card, just many bad ones. Even still I was able to beat my opponents. I can see how people can get really good at this, but to me it doesn't feel like a game it feels like work. How much money do you have to spend to get to the competition level I wonder? While it is a well built game and I did get **** into it there was a lack of animation, gameplay mechanics, music, and well it felt a bit like a browser based mmorpg from the 90's but with touch screen.

They have finally fixed everything that in my original review I said was wrong with the game. So for that it gets a 10. But also gets a ten for the addition of 200cc racing for free for everyone!!! This game just keeps paying off. Cheap DLC and huge amounts of bonus content. Great Job Nintendo!!

Worth every cent. While the game already feels complete by the time you get 3 stars in every course in every category, the new courses are so much fun especially because you can play as LINK! So yeah, I'm very happy about this super affordable 16 new courses (including mirror modes), new cars, drivers, and cart customizing. Also when bought together with DLC Pack 2 you get a discount as well as bonus colored Yoshis and Shy Guys. Too cute!

I played the original and ended up putting it down. I really love this in 3D as it makes you feel like you are more part of the action. The atmospheres are immersive and the story is deeply emotional. There are enough cut scenes to make a short mini series (with all of the heart-to-hearts!) And the attack system feels so much cleaner than the Wii version. The controls are amazing, especially with the c-stick. It's the only game I've managed to play long enough to kill my batteries!

Pokemon Omega Ruby6
May 11, 2015
I was majorly disappointed in the lack of 3D in this '3DS remake' as the colours and backgrounds are vibrant. The game, while being my first Pokemon game (I won it in an online draw), fails to impress. Over the years I have heard so much hype. I bought Platinum for the Wii but never had a chance to play too much of it before a friend "borrowed it" and never saw it again. But from my memory this is pretty much the same game. Repetitive, juvenile, slow, too many Pokemon to remember or care about, too easy to play... it leaves you wondering what am I missing? The animations are cute and it is at least not as bad as Paper Mario Sticker Star, and it does make an okay portable game without having to commit too much of your brain cells or time restraints make it easy to put down and pick up again. Too bad Xenoblade Chronicles 3D had to come along and take my time instead!

BOXBOY!9
May 11, 2015
I have played my share of puzzle games in the past and this one sits up there as one of the best. I like the black and white no 3DS stark graphics in comparison to the majority of the games on 3DS. The game starts off easily enough and can get pretty pretty hard. You can use play coins to unlock hints if things get too tough, but they don't tell you how to get the crowns. The crowns can be very challenging! Addictive and relaxing with no time limits, but the opportunity to unlock new game modes (including time challenges) makes this game great value at being priced as low as a VC game. The music is also pretty decent!

While I would never buy this game, I got it free from Club Nintendo as a reward. I am so glad I had the chance to play it and now I put aside some time everyday. I like how you can just pick it up and put it down. Everything about this game is simple and relaxing. I wouldn't give it a 10 just because the music gets a little annoying sometimes (always chipper and upbeat).

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker10

This game if fun for anybody who picks it up. So far two people who never play video games are currently loving it in my household. For the more seasoned gamer, it takes some getting used to not being able to jump, however the quirky mechanics they dreamed up to compensate make it much more enjoyable than your average puzzle platforming adventure. Very colorful, imaginative and priced lower than a AAA title while delivering AAA fun. Highly recommended.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U10
Nov 22, 2014
I normally don't play games like this but I bought it to get the 2 CD bonus soundtrack when you buy the 3DS Smash and the Wii U Smash. I also really liked the Smash posters Club Nintendo sent me. Needless to say the soundtrack is amazing enough on it's own to convince this gamer to buy both versions. I spent a couple hours playing with a friend and it was really hard to put down. The graphics are gorgeous and well thought out. All of the stages are breathtaking and unpredictable. There were a number of surprises I won't list here as spoilers. I'm glad Nintendo offers free promotions or I don't know if I would have bothered with this fantastic game!!

I got this game because of the Wii U hype and wanted to get some practice in before the release on November 21. The demo did not do this game justice. the replay value here is immense. Pikmin 310
Oct 27, 2014
There is no other game that is more precise and finely crafted than this instant hit. I enjoy the graphics, music, and even the story line, when usually one or all three of those fail to impress. The best thing about it is the replay value as well as a large amount of inexpensive DLC. I won't go further into the details of its fluid game play as it must be experienced to be understood. Very endearing and memorable game, one of the most unique emotional experiences I've ever had brought on by pixels. What makes me give this a ten is that it actually never pissed me off, always engaged, was beautiful, the sound was organic instead of produced, and there is this weird connection to another world that feels completely normal. What's not normal are these mysterious bits of loose Human detritus. There is no human presence, and these wonderful Pikmin beings have evolved to be both plant and animal in an eerie post-apocalyptic world where everything is gorgeous including the baddies. The unique play style takes very little getting used to for young and old alike. Seriously one of the best games ever made.

Hyrule Warriors10

This game is only getting low scores by reviewers who a) got the game for free and/or b) are gamers who like Zelda and don't enjoy the Dynasty Warrior series. One called it 'cringe worthy'... I'm sorry but I have been playing Zelda games for at least 20 years and I think this game is a blast. Very polished and fun to play with a friend because of the gamepad.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star4
Jul 9, 2014
This Paper Mario feels like nothing else in the series. It is hard to get into, with no real direction given. The combat is long and the combat system is clumsy. The stickers are not fun or very useful most of the time. There are so many limits placed on Mario. There is no flip world, and after playing Zelda Link Between Worlds I would say it is more loyal to the Paper Mario spirit than Sticker Star. More than a little disappointed this game as it could have been something else without tarnishing the Mario brand.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag6
Jul 9, 2014
I enjoyed the graphics, sound effects, music and gameplay. The ship battles got tedious, especially when the odds are 100% in your favour you have to watch a long predictable repetitive battle scene (instead of playing the game). THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY MISSIONS. It's hard to imagine completing them all before boredom sinks in. Playing online is also boring as there are supremely advanced players who have played these games before waiting to kill you and call you n00b. Although I give thanks to Ubisoft for supporting Wii U, it's hard to overlook some of the game breaking glitches. Once I was hovering in the air unable to move and another example is getting stuck in the mast of the ship. I guess I am spoiled by highly polished Nintendo titles because after 50% progress the game starts feeling tired and offers no new experiences.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe10
Jul 9, 2014
I had only given Kirby a few hours over the past 20 years and now because of this game I feel like I have been missing out on some real greatness. At first the game was super easy and offered no real challenge, yet it's compelling enough to continue based on the chipper music and colourful scenery. These are the warm up levels. By the time you reach 50% completion you will begin to break a sweat. All of the keychains you collect offer glimpses into the past Kirby library, and there are hundreds of them to collect, although not necessary. Also, finding the sunstones is fun, but not essential to collect them all (in case you can't figure out some of them). These aspects offer a tonne of replay, and make the game very hard to put down for completists. It's tough to play the game in public because the music is so great you'll crank it full blast, This is also one of the best 3D games visually, the amount of care and detail makes it feel like HD. Triple Deluxe is an all-ages gateway drug into the Kirby universe.

LEGO The Hobbit6
Jul 9, 2014
I tried playing this by myself and couldn't get very far. There is a glitch early in the game that traps your companion behind a locked door. Without the companion you cannot move forward and when you switch to that charachter he's still stuck behind the door. Because of the puzzle solving nature of the game I wasted alot of time trying to figure it out before giving up. A few weeks later my brother came over and he wanted to play. With two players the locked door glitch doesn't happen. Although the repetitive combat wears thin, it was fun playing in multiplayer. Coupled with long cut scenes you can't skip, that first experience has made me wary of giving the game anymore of my solo time.

Mario Kart 89
Jul 9, 2014
This game is almost perfect so I will only point out the minor flaws: it doesn't offer off-tv play, there is no map option on tv, and no option to turn off Mario TV. When you finish a race the default menu option is to watch a replay instead of playing the next race. These things are all very tiny issues in a game I must be hard on as a huge fan of the Mario Kart franchise.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze10
Feb 21, 2014
Better than Rayman Legends. I think people who give it a low score are either mad about not getting HD Metroid, or they didn't grow up playing games in the 80's. This Retro game feels like an arcade adventure with limitless quarters. Sure the motion and timing has to be precise just like the original Donkey Kong, but at least they throw as many lives as you need at you without making it feel like hand holding. This game is 1080p running at 60fps so that makes it "next gen" in the minds of pixel counters. For me, sure the graphics and music are stunning, but it's the challenge that gives this game huge replay value.
