Tetris 99: Big Block

This is great to practice Tetris at your own speed and playing offline. The gameplay is smoother that Puyo Puyo Tetris and it is significantly cheaper than Tetris Effect. It’s only $10 and the Tetris 99 main game was free. With this, you can take Tetris anywhere, and no cartridge. Seriously, what is there to complain about. You wanna get good? Play 999 line mode and practice those double and triple t spins. Learn builds from hard-drop. Perfect 4-wide. This is my favorite practice ground and also good for zoning out, dropping blocks while I listen to an audiobook. Money well spent. I was gonna give it an 8, and I usually don’t do this, but the low reviews don’t make sense to me at all. So, a 9 it is.

So, I came into this game as a solid Tetris 99 player and a newbie at Puyo Puyo. I got half way through story mode, at which point Tetris had been very easy and Puyo Puyo had been a good challenge but was now becoming difficult. This was somewhat expected, although I thought I might get a little farther before Puyo Puyo became so difficult. I enjoyed this first half of the game and decided to try out another of the various game modes I saw in the menu. So, I switched to online play for Tetris only, something I was looking forward to. Online play for Tetris does not run smooth. I may go back to finish story mode or play other game modes but I can’t go higher than this with the disappointing online Tetris.

So I bought the game a week before Thanksgiving. It had been out for almost 2 months by the time I got it. But, it was on sale at GameStop, brand new for only $20. I gotta say, it feels like the same game I was playing on PS3 10 years ago! That is both good and bad I guess, because I loved the game then, but it really isn’t much different. I’ve only heard bad things about Ultimate Team, and I know as Legacy edition it’s is the exact game from a few years ago with a roster update. However, it still has great gameplay and I was able to get it at a very reasonable price. It’s still the best soccer game on switch, unless you count Rocket League! EA should provide cheap roster updates every season, though, if they’re not going to change the game at all. Overall though, I gotta give this one a passing score, based on the price I payed, and amount I will be playing it, regardless of EA’s shortcomings. 7/10

So, I started playing Pokémon go to get out walking more; and I did for a while, and my dog loved it, because I took him too, and we pit patted around the block. But, it eventually devolved into this addicting game where I was driving around to wait around and battle giant Pokémon in raids with a group of people. And I was sitting on the coach trading Pokemon with my brother and nephew for ‘lucky’ ones an hour at a time. So, I decided to try Pikmin Bloom! Now I am getting up early to walk long, and fast, spreading flowers across the world. Sure, Pikmin might not be as cool as Pokemon, and the gameplay pretty basic, but I’m getting out and getting exercise! And I don’t have to stare at my phone as much! It’s motivating me to be healthier. I used to be a runner and suffered a bad back injury, and can only walk now, and Pikmin was just the thing I needed. :) it will be interesting to see how the game evolves moving forward and if the game will be able to hold my attention, in a healthy way, and keep these positive changes flowing.

The large roster of heroes, cutscenes, graphics, story and overall fanservice was very enjoyable, and lengthy. However, there were very few moments where I felt I had really learned something and got better at gameplay, which was lacking. You’re mostly using staggering moves followed by powerful attack moves on bosses, room clearing moves on others, and synergizing your attacks as much as possible with your teammates. Disappointingly, you have to constantly change characters during the fight because computer controlled players don’t use their special attacks often. Defense is mostly absent, and I very rarely had to learn a boss’s attack and developed any kind of strategy. So, it’s mostly button mashing mayhem. When I switch characters I often lose track of where my guy is on the screen and the camera is unreliable. Players abilities are grinded up in exercises outside the main story, which is tedious and your best off sticking with the same group as much as possible to level up quickly and get through the story. I ended up leaving some heroes behind without hardly touching them and sticking to just a handful of guys. Hulk, Spider-Man, iron man, captain America, venom, miss marvel and more all left behind. Storm and black panther, who aren’t favorites of mine, fit well with my group and were leveled up additions half way through, so they got more play than I had anticipated. That said, I did have some(not many) battles I lost, but always won on the second if not third try which kept the story going. The moves for some players I used were fun, as well, (hello Thor, Starlord, Ghost Rider) and I’m sure there were more I missed out on. My team at the end was Storm, BP, Deadpool, and Wolverine. They were able to do the job even on the harder difficulty and slightly below the recommended leveling. I would recommend this game, despite its misses in gameplay, to marvel movie fans and button mashers, both of which I am. Heck, maybe even families and friends could enjoy some button mashing mayhem together. 7.5/10

My niece asked me to buy this game. I was skeptical, but it was only $3. She and my other niece, each around 6 years old have played for hours. The cakes move back and forth at the top of the screen, and you just have to time a click to stack them on top of each other. You can have one error; two errors and you have to restart the level. Based on how straight they are you get a rating of 1-3 stars. There are 50 levels I think, each moving the cake faster than the last. Between levels you can customize your own cakes, with some truly girly options. It is $3 well spent if you have a girl this age. My nephew(10 y/o) also plays sometimes and I’ve even played it with them a little myself. It’s simple, but it’s fun.

Ok, so I’m stuck babysitting my niece once a week, and she loved the demo version. She begged for me to buy the game when it came out, so now I sunk $50 into this port. I did enjoy making the miis with her to look like family members. But, the game itself is very silly and simplistic. Like, put players in the same room together to build friendship. Then increased friendship leads to random collaborative attacks on the battlefield. The fighting is very simplistic. Players can choose a job such as thief, pop star or chef. There are unicorns. It is a game for kids. Little kids. I’m glad that she’s happy to play the game and it is an activity that she doesn’t need much supervision, but hopefully she can beat it and let go of it in a few months and I can get half my money back. For young kids, I’d give this game a 8/10. For adults, it’s like a 3. I would never pay $50 for a game like this for myself. Games that young kids and adults can enjoy together better include Mario Kart, Snipperclippers, Luigis Mansion, and Minecraft.

This is the first FPS game I’ve played since the original Duke Nukem. It was very cinematic and really enjoyable. One of the best storylines and most detailed game I’ve ever played. Games have come a long way since ol’ Duke. The gameplay was top notch and although I’m not a veteran of the genre, I found it to be smooth in docked mode and on the TV. Shooting with a gun in each hand and two different triggers was unique. I’m normally not the type to like a lot of dialogue, but fully enjoyed it here. I read others saying you can’t skip the cutscenes, but you can. If you hit a button an option to skip pops up on the screen. I haven’t actually gone through and did that, but I’m sure it works. It must’ve been added in after the complaints. This is a rambling review, I realize. What I want to say is, great game: 9/10.

Ok, so this is a twin stick shooter, like Enter the Gungeon, but not quite as good. It does have the brilliant idea of players picking up items that handicap them rather than help them, and the worse you are handicapped the better items you can trade them in for when you finally find a shop. However, the levels feel way too cramped, I suffered way too many unavoidable deaths, and didn’t get a sense of any meaningful progression in the game or in my skills that I experienced in Enter the Gungeon. It seemed like it would **** up many hours to beat, but wasn’t worth the time. Considering I only paid $2 for this, I give it 7/10. But I’ve spent roughly $2 on better switch games: Caveblazers, Mutant Mudds, Downwell, Gonner, Dadish 1&2, Broforce, Mother Russia Bleeds, to name a few.....

It can be beat in 2 hours or so, but not without challenge. The humor is perfect! Thomas Young is spot on, and has a great lighthearted take on with how kids rationalize their mischief, and the the responses overwhelmed and clueless parents give. The platforming is simple, and similar to the original Dadish with a few surprises. It starts off very easy and progresses in difficulty very seamlessly. I enjoyed my time spent here and will be buying Dadish 3 if there is one.

This game is overrated. Buy this game if you like: 1. Making sure you talk to an owl in every dungeon room. Oh, he didn’t say anything? That’s because you have to find his beak first and retrace your steps. 2. Retracing your steps. Not just for owls, but for well, everything. Want to get to that heart you can’t get to, want to get in that boss room. You don’t have the item you need yet. 3. Treating enemies as if they don’t exist because you have 15 hearts, they do half a heart damage and often leave a full heart when you do decide to kill them. 4 Short and simple boss battles. 5. Figuring out where is the key you’re missing in the internet. Or maybe it’s not a key, you didn’t notice there was a spot to use the hookshot, or who knows. Did you talk to every owl? 6. Remembering hints/directions that were told to you in the game last week. 7. NOT HAVING A DEDICATED JUMP BUTTON!!! Every time you walk up to a pit, make sure you go back into the menu and have that feather equipped. 8. Jumping down from a ledge to realize you want to go back up and that’s a long journey. 9. Talking to townfolk. 10. Playing on those crane machines where you stick in the quarter and it picks up and drops a stuffed animal back where it picked it up from. Sounds fun, right?

Seemed fun, but not for me. It made me miss SSX Tricky on PS2, a game where tricks in the air were much more intuitive and enjoyable. I found the most effective way to dodge bullets was the spin move, but it wasn’t conducive to a good style points score, which led to either death or, most often, a “C” on my report card. Admittedly, I only played this game for an hour, cruising through the first ten levels with C’s, but the game controls to aim were imprecise and my joycon stick is easily pushed in, which inadvertently and repeatedly put the game in slow motion. I was able to tolerate inadvertently crawling in Zelda at times, but this game is no Zelda. Maybe I should invest in a pro controller, or just give the game more time, but ultimately, it’s for sale on eBay. I give it a 7/10 mostly because it seems like a game other people would enjoy more than me, it’s affordable, and although short, I imagine it has significant replayability as trick shots are mastered and higher scores are chased.

I bought this for $2 and my score is based on this price point. This was a sweet and short platformer I was able to 100% in 2 hours and go back to 100% in less than an hour of additional time. You play as a dad radish searching for his raddish kids, double jumping dangers and pushing blocks to solve puzzles in each level, culminating in finding one of your kids, who says something funny, if you like dad jokes. Each level has a star to collect. There are approximately 50 levels and 5 bosses. Many can be beat in a minute or two, but progress naturally in difficulty, and take a bit longer later on. Overall, it was a good palate cleanser between the more difficult platformers I often play. If you liked it, the most similar game to this one I’ve played would be Whipsey.

I got this on sale for $1. For that price, it was excellent. It was very vulgar, gory, violent, and as others stated, depicts Russians in a racist manner. That might not be for everybody, but was fine for me. It’s not a game to take seriously, you know? The game mechanics were repetitive but fun. The level of difficulty was trying at times, but not overwhelming, except for the final boss, who I gave up on. Maybe I’ll go back and beat him some day, but I already got my dollar’s worth. $15 is a little steep considering the great selection of games you can find on the Eshop in the $15-$20 range, but If you are a fan of South Park type humor and 90’s style beat’em ups it’s worth giving a try if you find it on sale 50% off or more. Update: I went back and beat it, and it was do-able. It took me an hour or so of my efforts. There is a second ending if you beat the boss without using a power-up which seemed within reach, but the one ending was enough for me.

This game is ok, but is definitely frustrating at times. It is a Mega Man clone, especially in level design, enemy design and boss design. Level selection layout is similar to Super Mario 3. Interestingly, it shares similarities with Hollow Knight, with the shovel bounce off the heads of enemies and the money drop that floats in air upon death. All of those games I enjoyed a ton, but Shovel Knight not quite as much. Mega Man bosses were easy if you figured out the order to beat the bosses in and a particular boss’s weakness. Shovel Knight bosses were just easy. Super Mario 3 just had better gameplay, along with a bigger map with interesting warp options. Hollow Knight had better gameplay, better art, less frustrating deaths, and you could get your money back most of the time. Mostly, I just didn’t find the game well balanced. Shovel knight’s purple armor allowed additional magic, the phase locket cost little magic to induce invincibility, and 2 goblets of red ichor could be called upon to replenish both magic and HP completely. Consequently, deaths by enemy were few. Deaths instead came through frustrating platforming falls into bottomless pits or spikes for an instant death. These were often caused by kickback from your own attack, difficult sections of moving parts, or a combination of wind and spikes. I like hard games, and Super Meat Boy was a favorite, but these deaths always seamed to come after a significant playthrough, right before the next checkpoint. A portion of my money was often lost as it would fall in difficult and/or unretrievable areas. Unlocking secret areas was pretty unimaginative as well, as most were simply found by shoveling through a knot in the wall. I did enjoy the tower of fate and the final bosses, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the rest of the game. And worst of all, after beating Shovel of Hope, I played the next game expecting a new game. What I got was largely THE SAME GAME!!!! - same exact levels, tweaked a little. The difference was that you played with a different character with a new set of skills - lame. Ok - so I kept playing and the game was tweaked more than I thought. It burrowed levels from the original but changed them to varying degrees, rewrote the stories, and changed various other aspects. Plague knight had a steeper learning curve and lots of weapon combination choices. It was perhaps the most frustrating game of the 4, but also had the most replay ability. Also, the best writing of the 4 games was Plague knight. Specter knight I found most enjoyable overall as the gameplay felt so natural and pit deaths were minimized. King of cards probably had second best gameplay and introduced a card game, but the rules were not explained well. This was probably the second most enjoyable for me.

Also, I had not played the previous iterations. However, it was undeniable the amount of work that must have gone into this game. The levels and puzzles were very well thought out and the cut scenes were great. Once I had put about 5 hours into the game the buttons became second nature and found myself finding better hidden gems in later levels than the more obviously placed once I passed over at the beginning. It was satisfying figuring out how to beat each boss, as discovering their weakness was always a puzzle itself. Overall, pleasantly surprised. I’m sure someday I’ll purchase Luigi’s Mansion 4.

Ok, so let’s be realistic here. This is a great game. Anybody who likes Mario platformers, playing this for the first time, and not afraid of a little challenge will enjoy this game. I have played numerous games for the Nintendo Switch and this is one of a select few that I enjoyed so much I went back to 100%. The reason for the low ratings appear to be because: a) it’s the same game already released for the Wii U. b) people bought it again because they thought Luigi mode added new levels and all it really does is speed up the clock. c) it’s a little more challenging than they are accustomed to. The reality is that the original game got an 8.0 on metacritic, the game aged well, and new features were added to it. If you already played the game, don’t buy it if you’re expecting it to be much more than it was before. If you are new to the game, make the purchase, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

I love a good fart joke, but didn’t love this game. I didn’t dig the artwork. It looked like a little kid drew it. The gameplay was very simplistic in that you move along at a constant speed and use a button to jump and do double jumps using the power of farts to avoid obstacles or grab items. Simplistic gameplay can be okay with complex and varied level design, but I didn’t find that here. I believe I read that a man and his girlfriend made this game themselves, and while that’s an impressive accomplishment I can’t recommend this game. If you are looking for a similar style one button jump game, I would recommend super one more jump. Or, you could hop on your computer and play the helicopter game for free.

I put in about 5 or 10 hours in this game. A certain enemy, when he showed up, killed me easily every time. When he wasn’t there I got a while farther. I felt progression in my personal performance, as I began to master the enjoyable gameplay mechanics. However, it didn’t translate well to how far I was getting in the game. I felt how far I was reaching on my runs was more determined by the randomness of the game, and that wasn’t fun. I’ve played and enjoyed a number of hard games on the switch as well as a number of roguelikes. I purchased the physical version of this game for $30 used and had previously read a lot of hype on this game. I feel as though it didn’t live up to the hype.

It’s a Q-Bert clone. It’s a good game for a quick handheld session if you don’t have an Switch Online or an internet connection to play better quick session games. I will say that it is good in handheld mode and I played it for at least a few hours.

So, everyone knows this game is excellent. One frustrating thing I would like to mention is that when attacking or running from enemies I find the joystick on my joycon is easily pushed in and I find myself now crawling on the ground with an enemy closing in, or already beating me to smithereens. I’ve learned to finesse the joystick a bit more over time, but it distracts me from the gameplay at times, and other times I still end up crawling on accident. I would still give this game a 10. But, it may be better played with a different controller, maybe the pro controller(I don’t have one), and this may want to be considered before buying the game, especially if you mash hard on your joystick.

if you like fast, addicting gameplay with high difficulty, and competitive leaderboards, this is the game for you. If you are frustrated easily, like easy platformers, or have people at home that will be walking in front of the screen frequently, maybe it’s not. I’m of the former group, and I loved this game!!!! It was the most addicting game ever. My wife hated it. It’s absolutely not fun to watch someone else play this game or get reprimanded for walking in front of the screen and causing player death. What is fun is defeating an incredibly difficult level with an incredibly fast time, and seeing your name high on the leaderboard, after 100 tries and 100 deaths. What makes a person want to play the same levels 100 times you ask??? What makes this possible are levels that only take seconds to beat, great physics based gameplay, and nonexistent load times. Many times it seems like straight forward execution of the course, but more often than not there is an alternate route most players are not seeing, that when executed nearly perfect will lead you to the top. I hope Super Meat Boy Forever is this good when it is finally released!!!!!!

Graphics and level design were spot on. Bosses were a little on the easy side as they often are in Nintendo games. Player movement didn’t feel as sharp as in other platformers I’ve enjoyed more(Rayman Legends, Guacamelee, Super Meat Boy, Cuphead).

This game plays a lot like Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze with similar level design, box busting rolls, roll jumps, and collectibles. You gather up beetalions, saving one at the end of each level, which serve as 1 more hit you can take in the impossible lair. You can access the impossible lair or not so impossible lair at any point in the game. That’s not a joke. There are 2 different lairs, and that’s what they are called. When you feel you are ready, you go to the lair and try to beat the game. You will quickly learn that the more beetalions the better. Overall, I thought Donkey Kong was an 8/10, so I gave this one 7/10. Its the next best thing.

I had never played a game of this genre before, but found this game brilliant. This game may not be as accessible for all the little kiddies as other Mario Games, but would be excellent for anybody 10+. It requires some thinking and strategy, as it is a turn based strategy game in which Mario and his Friends use a variety of Offensive, Defensive, Close Combat and Ranged skills as they move around a chess-like battlefield littered with barriers, tunnels, and of course, enemies. The levels and especially the bosses are very well designed. Difficulty gradually ramps up as you progress, and there are some good challenges toward the end. I personally liked this game as much as Mario Odyssey. This game unfathomably can be found for mere $20 and you would be hard pressed to find a better value.

So I have real fond memories growing up playing Mega Man games, especially Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X. So, in this game I’ve only played a bit of Zero 2 so far, but I came away unimpressed. Your character, and the enemies, are disproportionately big for the screen, which gives little time to react, especially since there is no wide screen. The graphics look bad. Like, the NES games look better. The dialogue is boring and tedious. And I have to hold down the R button and tap another button at the same time to use my secondary skill. Being that the sword is so much more powerful than shooting, I usually put that as my primary skill, and I’m left with A MEGA MAN GAME THAT I HAVE TO HOLD DOWN 2 DIFFERENT BUTTONS JUST TO SHOOT!!! The simplistic gameplay of earlier mega mans was much more accessible and enjoyable. I would only recommend this game to people who’ve previously played and enjoyed this game.

So a single guy made this game over 15 years ago. And today you can play it handheld on the Nintendo Switch! I’ve played about 50 games on the switch and this was one of few that I was completely drawn into right away, and played every day until I beat it. Gameplay reminds me of megaman games for the NES, but with a better story and some rpg elements. Oh, and there are multiple endings, and you can see them all in the same run! I do wish there was always a save point before all bosses. That’s my only beef. Great game. 9/10

The game seems **** I’m waiting 5 minutes to get in an online game. That’s way too long. Seriously, can’t get 8 people together in less than 5 minutes? And this game was just 90% off. There must be a decent sized user base, at least this week considering the sale. I don’t get it.

I bought this game on sale for $1. It was simple, but enjoyable, and well worth the purchase. Gameplay was solid. Quest was short. It does blatantly rip off some well known platformers. A little more length and creativity would make this game even better.
