Dragon Age: The Veilguard4
Nov 2, 2024
Never in my life I have seen such a collection ill-written dialogues, it's something between a joke and true horror. They talk to you as if you are a toddler, obviously incapable of understanding the situation you're in. And they tell you numbers of times you shouldn't assume their gender because it makes them extremely unhappy. Not that your dialog options are useful enough to annoy anyone. Dialogs are meaningless, and so are, apparently, your decisions. I mean you're in a war and they are finicky on how they're perceived. I can say the best of the game is the character editor, while the Qunari look less Qunari-like but rather like humans with horns. Story is like a narrow hose, the world is tiny, riddles are a waste of time and your enemies might have exotic genders but all look the same. Difficult tasks obviously serve to drive up the howlongtobeat times. Is it a good game? Definitely, it's the worst game of the franchise but it can be considered an okay game.

It's a RPG game made by people who hate RPGs, apparently. A big map full of emptiness, a handful of enemies, no story to talk of, everybody of a class tier wears the same, has the same skills. You can sell your worthless crap and buy other worthless crap. Outdated graphics. But the combat is okay, if you like that kind of fighting. It's made for consoles and for using controllers, clearly. This is a cheap imitation of a role playing game, nothing more.

It's a fine JRPG, but it's very repetitive, and everything is so tedious and takes ages, and you're sort of drowning in worthless junk along the way, and the story is so simplistic that once you've played through the game, there's no joy in it.

Maybe somewhat surprisingly it's a great game. Much unlike LoF 1 it appears rather obviously like a walking simulator without many choices, but atmosphere is great, plot is great, you could just object the many anachronisms and steampunk-failing details. It's cool, it's great, it's fun, and it's horror. Only a very small piece to perfection is missing.

This game is insanely good. I didn't notice it in my first review, but it's in a league with Silent Hill and Amnesia and other horror classics, except it starts out pretty unhorrific. I highly recommend it, though it's not for the faint of heart, despite fewer jumpscares.

SH2 is one of the few games that I completely underestimated on the first try. In fact, I had to read through fan reviews to realize what this game was all about. The awkward controls and the seemingly endless back-and-forth tarnish the enjoyment of the game in my opinion, but it's still mind-blowing.

I am facing a problem. Pillars of Eternity is certainly one of the best RPG games I know. But: it is indispensable to read and understand the lengthy texts that are displayed to you, because they contain important hints. Depending on the hardware (resolution and display), this is an imposition. And that's why I think this is one of the best games that are unplayable.

Pretty cool game, though you realize it's pretty "old-school" and at the beginning of a long line of advancements. Some things you can always do, but it only makes sense if you have previously triggered the quest, otherwise it may not be feasible anymore. The difficulty level is pretty static, if you get to this place at first you have to use every trick in the book, but if you get there later it's practically a piece of cake. You always go in pairs - yourself and a henchman. I enjoy the game because it evokes nostalgia, but for newcomers the whole thing takes quite a bit of getting used to.

A walking simulator copying a lot from other games, TSORF remains independent, while reminding of its numerous role models. Unfortunately, all the details are executed carelessly, and the story appears diffuse and haphazard. So much would have been possible, but here we are left with just a lame linear tube that you feel forced into rather than immersed in.

At first, it looks as if DA:I consisted of an enormous world with virtually no boundaries. But it's just illusion. The truth is, the whole landscape is just a narrow hose, as is the story. The non-player characters are ridiculously one dimensional, and there are a few points in the story where you can make decisions. But it's nothing near DAO or DA2 and the story remains colourless and boring all the time no matter what (often repetetive) task is to be performed.

The Bard's Tale is not really a good game in the strictest sense. It's an unbalanced hack and slash adventure game that hangs in many places and doesn't have a viable story or even a credible goal. Dragon Age II8
Apr 21, 2021
Perhaps surprisingly, I find this game immersive and beautiful. Yet the story is so linear that every decision made by the player basically leads to the same result indiscriminately. Many scenes are cheaply made: copies of their predecessors, some well-known corridors taped shut, others opened. But it's all told in such a rousing way that it's still fun to play. Until, at the end, the difficulty level suddenly increases from "beginner" to "advanced". Maybe it's not a good role-playing game, but it's a great story told.

Neverwinter Nights 25
Apr 21, 2021
The base game is one of the worst ever written. The story is long, but completely linear and of crippling dreariness. The implementation is so weird that you can rarely tell if it's a quirk or you just didn't understand the controls. The characters are executed with personalities to some extent, but this changes little in the game. For casual players it probably makes more sense: the flow of the game doesn't bother much with AD&D rules, and once you've forgotten the old back-and-forth, new back-and-forth isn't so boring anymore. The downsides of AD&D spells are fully implemented: One and the same spell combined with half a dozen mods results in a confusing collection.

Apr 9, 2021
Machinarium is a game set in garbage, the scenario is garbage, the protagonists are scrap, and everything looks like junk. They practically don't speak, and they interact on a give-take-or-disturb level. While graphics and design and especially the music are outspoken great, the puzzles are not. it feels arbitrary to solve 4 puzzles in a row having to do with sorting of numbers just to get a robot dog saved. Even though it's almost beautiful, the story and ambience depress. One doesn't really know why one should take the trouble of fumbling around. For me, playing the game is unpleasant.

While Amanita has always been good for original games, this one is more of a nuisance than a game. Most of the sounds are disgusting, the game mechanics look well done at first, but fail in many details, which then turns an adventure game into a diffuse messing around. The plot can be described as lame-ass at best, the usual stuff for Amanita, and only quite funny if you don't think about it. You may play this on your mobile phone and have fun, but don't try it on your desktop PC.

The funny and childlike presentation cannot hide the fact that this is a game for juveniles and adults. It's relatively complicated to play and without any reference to children's imaginations. For me just the best RPG ever. The last and the most opulent work of Bioware before it got deconstructed. NPCs you can interact with, and party characters who have exactly that: Character. If you play it today it's so terrible old school you can only watch in terror. Every fight or action has to be prepared, everyone takes his best weapons for the fight, the people in background prepare their buffs, the wizards learn their spells, and voila, the single level 1 cockroach is dead. Or the chest is opened without touching it, it took only 20 nights resting. When you start the game it looks hard but promising, but after a while you find out it remains like that: It's a battle between the player and the rules, and the rules don't like you having fun.

Silent Hill: Homecoming2
Feb 3, 2020
I have long time hesitated to write a review. It was mainly because I was afraid I hadn't understood the idea behind SH:HC. But no, it appears, there is no hidden idea. It's a game that tries to imitate the spirit and path of its predecessors without copying every graphic and every riddle. Which is good. What is not good is that SH:HC is truly playable while completely unfrightening. Much of the horror of the older SH games came from the intentionally bad controls and the worthless weapons. Yeah maybe the lousy graphics, too. SH:HC is rather like an ordinary game. And sometimes, sometimes the story unpredictably kicks your ass. That makes the gameplay feel bad. You stand there with two different expectations (knowing the predecessors and on the other hand expect a more or less playable modern game), but you get both expectations disappointed. It won't work that way.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age7
Jan 14, 2020
Hey fans, first: This game is really fun. The cons are, it is an exact copy of DQ8 with mutated story elements. Many features are newly introduced, but if you know DQ8, the structures, arts, jokes and events appear very familiar. Even the music has been recycled. Instead of a 4 people group, you have now 8 which doesn't fit on the screen. Things leaving you speechless the first time are just boring 13 years later. DQ11 is much easier and more tolerating. You should make it without even being interested. It's smooth and fun, and it's no more that turn based as it was before, but still quite old-school. Combat AI of your group is more intelligent than you, most of the time, and there is no reason and few possibility to do differently. After all, you could say this game is rather a visual novel, because in about 2/3 of the game it's near impossible to lose a fight, and the game takes you by the hand and doesn't leave you much choice, if at all. If you encounter a puzzle, there will be big flashing arrows telling you what to do in order to solve it. If it isn't marked on the map, everybody you ask will send you there. What became worse that in DQ8 is the alchemy pot which creates less useful or interesting things and the missing arena (which is replaced with a usual fighting event). The combo actions in DQ11 are superfluous. The better graphics of DQ11 do not outweigh the better and multiply twisted story of DQ8.

Mages of Mystralia a funny game which reminds of the golden classics of console playing. I have been an early backer of the project of the times before Steam, but I can only say, the project went completely out of control. The development team wanted to make something like the ultimate RPG of all times, but they failed hopelessly because of their lack of technical knowledge and abilities. SOTA came out after long, long years with screamigly outdated graphics, ridiculous game mechanics, dusty ghost towns owned and built by some early backer, clunky multiplayer mode, and so on. Erverybody was so incredibly disappointed to see Richard Garriott fail like a programming rookie overwhelmed by his own ambitions and all the time trying to convince everyone that the project will get better. No, SOTA won't get better.

My Memory of Us6
Oct 15, 2018
It's a beautiful pittoresque game, but neither its target audience nor its purpose is very clear. It's so simple structured it would pass as a children's educational game but after all it's not even a challenge for children. It looks like some multi cultural manifesto located in 1990's Berlin and telling a story of the 1930ies (Klezmer-like music playing in the background). Game controls are weird and often do what you didn't mean to. As a history lesson, the game fails, but can be understood as a metaphor. The puzzles suffer from a severe lack of imagination and are annoying sometimes.

Actually the girl can reverse time, so you have the chance to change each of your decisions from bad to worse. No matter what you do, the consequences will prevail. This is exactly how an adolescent feels like, all the time. If you are older, you will feel reminded of times you thought long time forgotten. And yes, it's boring. Even though there is crime and murder everything drowns in the desperate dullness of a place that should never have been populated. Apropos nature: You will see the worst drawn trees in your life, and much of the other graphics details is sketch-like, unfinished. I guess the game might be a good recommendation for many female players, but it's just a guess.

This one's another talkie, you have to read long, long (really long) texts, often virtually pointless, and instead of creating atmosphere, it creates boredom. You can't (or you shouldn't) skip the reading, because sometimes valuable information is hidden inside. Voice-overs are rare and unambitious, simply a neutral person reading the text. The graphics (isometric) is so like of 2003 (though there have been games with better graphics at that time). The combat is clumsy, I can't say differently, simply no fun. Technically, Tyranny is a low-end game. Can't say it's no fun to play it, but the fun is in your head and not in the game.
