Mass Effect: Andromeda5
Apr 10, 2024
Don't let anyone trick you into thinking it's "fixed." The bugs are fixed for the most part, at least the game isn't liquefying in front of you, but it didn't change just how undercooked and rushed this game is. The facial animations, the scene staging, and the dialogue are all still atrocious. The teeth clip through lips, the characters look at you with a thousand-yard stare with unmoving eyeballs, and their attempt to showcase even a slightly complex emotion makes it look either creepy or laughable. The story is unfinished, and the setting is beyond generic. I swear to God that if you ask a modern AI to come up with a synth machine race comprised entirely of self-printing robots, Remnant would be the result. It's like the first draft of a race for a videogame. Granted, the Protheans weren't as fleshed out in the first Mass Effect either, but at least they were tied to the Reapers. In Andromeda they are everywhere, and nothing about them is interesting. Not their designs, not their mysterious creators, who apparently "eugeniced" the entire galaxy. The gameplay starts out strong, but the sheer stupidity of the AI and no restrictions on what your abilities are in this classless system mean you will crumb stomp unopposed. And my advice if you ever actually decide to play is to never do the RNG tasks. If there is no marker, do not bother. You can get 100% livability on every planet without touching them.

Balancing on the verge of being farcical. A very cool setting with a lot of variety and great set pieces. Attempting to be more like RE4, it completely removes RE7's survival mechanics and inventory management headaches. It's more **** extravaganza. Gothic house of vampires, metal factory of cyborg zombies, Lovecraftian boss. All in the service of a story that has some brilliant moments but ultimately takes itself far too seriously when considering the game's events. But hey, Resident Evil has been melodramatic for a while now.

Resident Evil 7: biohazard8

A slasher movie salad wrapped up in a tight package of fps survival horror with a clueless protagonist and key searching that suffers from the typical RE flaw. First half being an incredible game and the second half slipping in quality to the point where it may muddle the experience for some. I don't know if it was in any way possible to base the entire game only around Baker's house. But it should have been done. From the ship to the finale, it's just a slog.

I haven't played the original, so any cut content flew over my head, so I don't actually feel that the game is as short as people make it out to be. But even with that, you can feel that the game is rushed, from reused assets to mechanics that are just not finished. Like Nemesis, completely upstaged by Mr. X, Nemesis's only section where he actually chases seems bugged and just isn't effective. Instead of following you, he spawns in the alleys and the pimp slaps you from around the corner. It's completely unreasonable for the player to not fight him. He will catch up to you, but for some reason, one grenade can make him kneel, making the entire thing completely trivial. The rest of the game is standard action in Resident Evil. At least Nemesis and his boss fights are an actual improvement over RE2.

A fantastic remake of a classic survival horror game. Just like almost any Resident Evil game, it suffers from an amazing first half and a so-so second half. The Police Station and Mr. X are the golden highlights of the game and are filled with tension because of how underequipped you are and how Mr. X actually looks for you instead of just spawning near your location, to the point where you can run off to the other part of the police station and not see him for 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the other half pales in comparison. The boss fights range from mediocre to bad, like that crane one. Two playthroughs are a must because Leon and Claire's paths are indeed different enough to warrant replayability.

The gameplay is mediocre. It's the Arkham mix but dodges instead of counters, helped by an overpowered arsenal that the developers, I guess, didn't know what to do, so they just made end game enemies immune to most of it. The web swinging is the most interesting part of the game, but it's nothing to write home about when it comes to the overall experience. The story is split between action cutscenes with QTE's and railroaded MJ/Milles sections that make you want to turn off the game. I do not think anyone can honestly say they enjoy these walking cutscenes where MJ is ranting about her only character trait. That she is indeed a strong independent reporter who does need men to rescue her.

Total War: WARHAMMER III7
Sep 7, 2022
Just like Warhammer II, it's incredibly barren and unoptimized on launch. The rift mechanic, just like the vortex race, is obnoxious and really **** out the fun of expanding your empire. But at the end of the day, we all know that Warhammer III is just a stepping stone to Immortal Empires. The actual main game. When that's released and a couple of months pass to fix the undoubtedly broken state of it, then it will become the game for the ages.

Detroit: Become Human7
Jun 21, 2022
A very pretty and passionate David Cage fable. Unlike something pathetically linear like Beyond Two Souls, Detroit has staggering branching choices that actually matter. And a sprawling chart after every chapter really encourages re-playability. However, the writing is inane. Cage's vision of the future is to pretend that people will be so stupid to nonchalantly create completely uncanny, highly intelligent human androids, whose only feature that can separate them from a human is a LED monitor, which they can easily remove and blend in with everyone. Then create a scenario in which everyone is scratching their heads, wondering how these same androids could become self-aware. It's painfully silly, with one-note characters, utterly ridiculous slavery "allegories" and holocaust ovens. It is the definition of pretentious. But this is what David Cage does.

Charming and stylish in its presentation. Preposterously basic in its plot and themes. Some character introductions and confidant stories will cause you to roll your eyes several times, but that's the definitive Japanese game experience after all. For all its mechanics, the game becomes very easy no matter the difficulty and repetitive in it's combat, but the high-level personas will keep you going, because how can you not check them out. You can easily get 300 hours out of this game. And when it's all done, you might even feel sad that it's over.

While obviously rectifying the mistake that was Absolution. It still streamlined every single aspect of Blood Money. It's too easy. At its core, the difficulty is fully customizable, and the levels have a lot of replayability. So it's up to you if you want to see everything through the walls. But most people will choose the path of least resistance and just pick the opportunity and brainlessly roll through targets. Don't get me wrong, I don't want Codename or Silent Assassin difficulty, where you are essentially forced to abuse AI for perfect stealth. But you know, Blood Money does exist. Also, 1/3 of the plot as IOI split the game into episodes and separate instalments for money. Which is always great.

A definition of a perfect game. It's not just nostalgia at work. Although I can crudely estimate that I haven't played anything longer in my life than HoMM III. The art style still holds up. The mechanics and gameplay are timeless.
