Dune is one of my favorite books so even though Dune 1 was pretty bad I gave this one a shot. MISTAKE. Villeneuve is dead to me, what a crappy ode to political correctness. Herbert would be horrified.

Shameful that Hollywood actually made a movie glorifying a tribe that was heavily involved in the slave trade (and trying to whitewash their evil deeds). This is a huge step backwards for POC everywhere.

Every scene of this I was just thinking about how the David Lynch movie did it better. Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem and Stelan Skarsgard seemed like they were falling asleep in half their scenes, and I could definitely relate.

This is it, this is the final stake in the heart. Disney has killed Star Wars, they turned it into a shallow and derivative cash grab, and there's no coming back from this. There will always only ever be one Star Wars trilogy, everything made after 1983 will fade from the pages of history.

Not sure why I bothered to go see this, the MCU has been going downhill for a while and this just confirms it. The plot is meandering and incoherent, the villain is forgettable, and Brie Larson herself is just so, so, underwhelming in every way (and the terrible case of resting b**ch face sure doesn't help). These superhero moves have gotten way too generic and same-y, I think after Avengers: Endgame I'm going to call it quits with them.

The studio can spin it all they like, the truth is that Solo is just the latest disaster for the franchise and Disney Star Wars is now officially a crippled brand. JJ set the tone with his cynically corporate remake of ANH, Rogue One was pointless and forgettable (I saw it twice on video and can't remember a single character's name), and Rian's suicidally awful TLJ brought home that Disney is both unwilling to appeal to fans of classic SW, and unable to create new ones with their endlessly rehashed aesthetics, incoherent plots, and abrasive SJW politics. That brings us to Solo. Make no mistake, the Disney Star Wars fans all turned out, there just aren't many left anymore (as the article admits). Kids don't care about Han Solo, who they only know as a goofy failed smuggler and deadbeat dad who got stabbed to death like a chump in TFA. And OT fans aren't interested in watching Disney continue to dump on classic characters (in this case casting a third-rate nobody as Han Solo and playing him as a smirking dork instead of an edgy scoundrel), and in any case backstories are intrinsically dull since they're overshadowed by what happened later. Who is this movie for? Nobody. And nobody is showing up in droves. The fact that Disney is doubling down on even more backstory movies of characters who were popular decades ago (while leaving Kathleen Kennedy's catastrophic leadership in place) is another case of trying to play it safe in a way that will ultimately blow up in their faces. It's a strategy only a VP of Brand Development could love. But I guess if they thought they could actually create new compelling content, they wouldn't have had to buy Star Wars in the first place. Anyway, best of luck to them with the Johnson and Benioff/Weiss trilogies! They can't even satisfy fans with all the classic Star Wars characters helping out, so I'm sure they'll do great trying to create new stories from scratch. Lastly: I saw Solo. It was serviceably amusing, but pointless and cliched, and most of all it assumed I cared about these characters way more than I actually do. If Disney wants hits, it needs to make good movies (we loved the OT because they were genuinely, timelessly good, not because they had the Star Wars brand name). Babbling about good CinemaScores is laughable, they failed to predict the disastrous drop-offs TLJ had (meanwhile the "Russian bot" RT user score actually nailed the sour audience reaction). Even the prequels had respectable CinemaScores, but now that the hype has worn off everyone admits they were crap. They more time passes the clearer it gets that the last good Star Wars movie was made in 1983 (arguably 1980), and making 8 more isn't going to change that fact.

Total dumpster fire. Bland, cynical, and unengaging from start to finish. The tokenism (seemingly the whole point of the movie) is very in-your-face and obnoxious as well. If you are a real fan of the books, don't give Disney a dime for this travesty.

I'll be nice and say it wasn't as bad as Suicide Squad, but that's the best possible spin I can put on it. Gal Gadot is stiff and awkward (not helped at all by the lifeless script), her waifish build makes the action scenes look comical (like if Captain America was a 100lb debutante), the villain is completely generic and forgettable, and the constant little "women rule, men drool" digs get really obnoxious and come across as insecurity on the part of the director. I loved Snyder's earlier DC movies, but after this my interest in Justice League is just about at rock bottom.

Really disappointing rehash from Disney. Why again did anyone think this movie needed to be made? The original was superb, this one is a soulless mess. It throws in some very minor plot tweaks and additions from the original, but otherwise it's hard to deny this is just a cash grab nostalgia play, like an increasingly large percentage of Hollywood's output seems to be. The singing is unimpressive (frankly these actors don't have the voices for it compared to the original renditions) and Belle never really sells you on having fallen for the Beast, she seems like she's only going through the motions. The best I can say about it is that it really helps you fully appreciate just how well done the original was by contrast. Watch that again instead of overpaying for this flash-but-hollow dreck. PS: Homosexual intimacy doesn't belong in family-friendly films, period. Shame on Disney for trying to hamhandedly crowbar controversial alternative-lifestyle elements like that into a lighthearted movie for children. That's not what anyone goes to a movie like this to see.

"Professional" critics are worthless, this was everything I wanted in a fantasy action movie. The visuals were absolutely stunning and highly original, the action was intense and dramatic, and the character work was simple and effective. While Hollywood always seems to need at least 140 minutes to get through a basic plot, this one trips along with fleet, efficient editing and comes roaring to the finish in a tight 100 minutes. Kept me fully engaged and invested for practically the whole runtime, and definitely feels like something I'll go back and revisit someday too. I will admit I was worried going in that the CGI monsters would look cheesy, but they were actually fantastic and the movie does a great job of building them up to be legitimately terrifying enemies. The contrast between the graceful athleticism of the defenders and the bestial savagery of the monsters had me flashing back to the battle of Helm's Deep in The Two Towers. The Great Wall is an excellent, groundbreaking action movie, and a welcome arrival for people who are tired of everything being either a superhero movie, a 6th sequel, or both.

When did Star Trek become all about running around and fighting and shooting? Weren't there supposed to be interesting sci-fi wonders and strange moral dilemmas and things like that?

Meh, it's just another generic JJ Abrams action movie, with a bunch of Millennials running around in a constant frenzy as the camera spastically twirls. Even though it's obsessed with recreating the look of the classics, it has none of the heart. The new characters mostly fall flat, and the old ones really have no excuse for being there (Leia especially has not aged well, it has to be said). I wish we as a people could just put this series out of its misery instead of torturing it like this.
