Game breaking bugs, microtransactions, and a hollow world waiting for an actual game to be added. If you were disappointed with where fallout went after 4, you will be utterly heartbroken by this soulless husk masquerading as a game.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire0

Cringe inducing dialogue. Weak character development. Horrific ship-to-ship combat-in text-that last forever. Do not waste your time or dollars.

Poor writing and weak game play. Does not capture the essence of Battletech, in my opinion. Avoid.

The best way I can describe this game is a character and narrative driven fantasy RPG along the lines of Baldur's Gate I/II and Dragon Age Origins with a few RTS-based "narrative quests". That means that most of gameplay will feel like Baldur's Gate with you controlling a party, then the story will require that you play a map that layers RTS elements on top of normal gameplay (e.g., building construction, resource gathering, unit recruiting similar to Warcraft/Starcraft). So overall the game feels like a party-based RPG. I do enjoy the RTS sections as a something fresh and particularly epic after party-based adventuring. Note that the first chapter is more of an RTS tutorial and prologue that merely sets up the main story and characters - the first lead character that you control is NOT the protagonist. The writing, characters, voice acting, art direction, and music are all excellent. This is what Pillars of Eternity should have looked and felt like. If you are an RPG lover like me, this is the best game to come along in years.

Utter garbage cash grab. The full price of this game with all the "at launch" DLC is $80. That's actually fine with me. But then to stack in-game purchases of loot boxes on top of this in a single player game?! And to hide the actually ending behind these in-game purchases? These developers have lost their minds. Time to learn the hard way, fellas.

Pyre0

Pyre is NOT an RPG. It is some sort of basketball game played by cartoon characters that look like villains in a Samurai Jack episode. The story is presented in a visual novel format that is linear, and again has nothing to do with an RPG. If this is an RPG, so is Ninja Gaiden and Doom. Shame on the developers for misrepresenting this product.

This is an example of AAA graphics and sound coupled with bland gameplay. Combat is clunky and dissatisfying. Blizzard has not shown the capacity to address imbalances between characters. Power adjustments are more of marketing actions to address complaints in Blizzard's forums rather than rational decisions made by developers looking at aggregated data. Competitive is literally the worst experience that I have ever encountered in an online game.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt10

If you think that the best fantasy RPGs of the past 10 years are the Witcher 2, Skyrim, and the original Dragon Age, you will LOVE this game. This is, IMO, the greatest fantasy RPG since Ultima 7. Gameplay, voice acting, graphics, world building, storyline... this is an amazing game. It is the first game that I have played in years where I will occasionally sit back after a cut scene and say "Wow, how did they come up with this?" Quality, quality, quality.

Great storytelling and visual atmosphere. Background graphics are sharp and simple, whereas character graphics are a bit dated. Overall a great old-school Shadowrun experience.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of The Betrayer10
Aug 10, 2011
An excellent game in the same vein as the Black Isle classic, Planescape: Torment. Well paced with improved graphics over the original Neverwinter Nights. As with any RPG though, it boils down to dialogue and character interaction, and this is where MoTB shines. Dialogue is clever and unique to each creature you encounter. The NPCs have unique, interesting, and strong personalities without being rude and abrasive (what's the deal with rude in-party NPCs that insult you constantly in a lot of modern RPGs? It's just dull. Why would you hang out with these people, much less trust them with your life?). Attention to detail abounds in this game. Great attention to detail abounds, such as load-screen text specific to the area you're entering and off-hand situational comments from your party during exploration. Highly recommended.

Dragon Age II2

A classic example **** not matching the overall franchise's core values and brand. DA Origins was strongly designed and communicated as a solid old-school Western RPG hearkening back to Baldur's Gate, which itself was strongly influenced by the pioneering Ultima games from the 80's and 90's. Halmarks of these games are 1) large, non-linear open worlds 2) strategic combat 3) character statistic and equipment customization for the protagonist and supporting party members. DA II fails on all accounts. There's obviously still a decent market for the traditional western RPG, as DA Origins sold a LOT of copies. And let's be honest, DA Origins wasn't a masterpiece by any means, but it at least targeted a specific segment of the market and served that segment decently well. This was bad brand management. Whoever is in charge of the DA franchise at EA should be canned, he's done incredible harm to the DA brand and ultimately devalued EA's investment in Bioware.
