Undertale9
Aug 4, 2019
Undertale is unlike any other game I've ever played. Highly recommended for everyone. I strongly suggest you go in blind - don't read anything about it or watch any videos, if you can help it. Just remember, you don't have to kill anyone. (Also: Undertale features one of the best soundtracks of this generation.) Just play it!

Goat Simulator: The GOATY6
Jul 30, 2019
Goat Simulator is a fun little diversion in short bursts, but its absurd premise and deliberately janky presentation and controls wear thin after a while. Considering this started as an April Fool's joke, it's quite an accomplishment; it just isn't as enjoyable on Nintendo Switch as I'd hoped.

New Super Mario Bros. 29
Jul 27, 2014
Probably my favorite in the "New Super Mario Bros." series. The platforming is solid and tight, and the emphasis on coin collecting with the million-coin challenge adds quite a bit of replay value. I love the graphics and music, and the Gold Flower is among the very best (if not OP) power-ups in the entire series. One of the best titles for 3DS!

Mario Tennis Open8
Jul 21, 2014
A fun, reasonably challenging tennis game. Looks and sounds good, though I expected a court-level point-of-view and depth of field as seen in the seminal Virtual Boy title "Mario's Tennis"; the 3D here is a bit disappointing by comparison. I wouldn't mind seeing more Nintendo characters in future installments, "Smash Bros."-style.

Kid Icarus: Uprising9

I REALLY want to give this a 10, but the controls are pretty bad; my hands and wrists get very sore during every play session. Once you get past that, it is a FANTASTIC game.

Pushmo8

A delightful puzzler that belongs on every 3DS. Loads of charm and a steady challenge. Make sure you try the sequels "Crashmo" and "Pushmo World", too!

Mario Kart 79
Jul 2, 2014
Nintendo can do no wrong with "Mario Kart". In this, the best handheld version of the franchise, we have stellar graphics, tons of fun modes and options, and plenty of replay value. A must-buy for all 2DS and 3DS owners.

Super Mario 3D Land9

So much fun! So much nostalgia. Looks great and loaded with charm and challenge. StreetPass features are pretty worthless, but otherwise a great experience overall. Easily a must-own 3DS title.

Star Fox 64 3D9
Jun 18, 2014
So very, very good. Even better than the original Nintendo 64 release in many ways. Excellent use of 3D, and pretty much everything looks and sounds better. You can still play the challenging "N64 mode" if you want, but other tweaks are available in the main campaign for newer players. If only there were online dogfights...

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D10
Jun 14, 2014
The definitive version of my favorite game of all time. Improves upon the Nintendo 64 original in so many ways. This was the first 3DS game I purchased and is a must for every 2DS or 3DS owner.

A very good "Tetris" title with lots of options. The 3D effect is all right but mostly unnecessary. I'd prefer a downloadable version, but I already bought the cart.

A fun, good-looking 3DS title that may have passed you by with its early release. Lots of variety and interesting challenges. Makes me long for "Pilotwings 64".

Big Bass Arcade: No Limit7
Dec 20, 2013
This is an accessible, no-frills type of fishing simulator. It's very easy to learn and rarely frustrating, as some fishing games can be. The stereoscopic 3D effects are decent, but could use a little more depth. The fishing line physics are very unrealistic, as the line will pass right through pier pilings, weeds, logs, etc. without resistance. Those problems aside, it's a decent time-killer for those seeking a fishing game for 3DS.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds10
Dec 5, 2013
Do you remember the first time you played "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past"? Do you remember the very first time you experienced "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time"? Are you like me, and first played those games when you were a kid, and it's been so long you only just barely recall that feeling? I felt it again with "The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds". It is one of the most satisfying, enjoyable, can't-put-it-down games I've played in a long time. If you like "Zelda" games, you will love this. If you've never played a "Zelda" game, this is a great place to start. A must-buy for every 3DS owner.

Super Mario 3D World10
Nov 30, 2013
It took exactly one year and four days after the console's launch, but the Wii U finally has a must-own, must-play title that will be remembered for years to come. Combining elements from virtually every Mario 2D and 3D platformer before it, Super Mario 3D World is both a celebration of the series' past and a refreshing new take on the tried-and-true formula. You will be tempted to play through the entire main game in just a few sittings, but there's plenty more to do after that especially for completionists and those who like a serious challenge. I never stop smiling while playing this game, and I don't think you will, either.

SteamWorld Dig9
Sep 15, 2013
I could not put this game down. It's one of the very few games that has gripped me so much, I played nearly nonstop until I completed it. As most other reviewers have suggested, it's an amalgamation of Metroid and Dig Dug Mr. Driller, with a lot of fun exploring and an interesting if thin story. My only complaint is the length it's fairly short, and there's not a ton of replay value if you collected all items and treasure the first time through (as I did). That aside, this is a must-play title for any 3DS owner.

Final DOOM10
Jul 27, 2013
There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said; Doom is one of the most important and influential video games of all time. Doom didn't invent the first-person shooter, but it laid the groundwork for the entire genre and established many of the essential elements still found in FPS titles today. I'm old enough to remember playing Doom on a DOS PC shortly after its release; it still holds up incredibly well today.

Donkey Kong Country Returns9
Jul 26, 2013
This game is gorgeous, by Wii standards among the best-looking on the platform. The soundtrack is magnificent. The level design is tremendous. The variety is outstanding. The game is enormous fun. So Why won't I give it a 10? The difficulty. The absurdly punishing difficulty. This game is very, very HARD. You will die over and over again. Only determined players will finish the entire game, and completionists will also be sadomasochists as this game will KILL YOU. Yes, the Super Guide is present to help get you through extremely tough levels, but where's the fun in that?

Blood (1997)8
Jul 24, 2013
With silly, zany, over-the-top gore and, well, blood abundant, this classic PC FPS takes the formula of Doom and sets it in an ersatz Evil Dead world with one-liners and elements clearly inspired by zombie horror slasher flicks. Blood is not groundbreaking or technically amazing, but it is enormous fun.

Art Style: AQUIA6
Jul 22, 2013
A serviceable puzzle game with a unique presentation, AQUIA is a decent entry in the DSiWare Art Style series. I found it to be a bit confusing at first, but once I got the hang of it managed to perform capably. However, it's worth noting I did have some success by simply randomly pushing pieces around when the screen was close to becoming fully dark; not enough to advance very far, but worth mentioning nonetheless.

Alien Crush Returns7
Jul 11, 2013
This is a serviceable pinball game with the bizarre "tables" that highlight the original TurboGrafx-16 game upon which it is based. The physics aren't perfect and some of the ball bounce takes a little getting used to, but it's not a bad game by any means. Fans of the original will probably enjoy this most; those looking for a realistic pinball sim should look elsewhere.

Arkanoid Plus!7
Jun 2, 2013
If you enjoyed the original Arkanoid in arcades or on the NES, or similar games like Breakout (which Arkanoid shamelessly ripped off), you'll like Arkanoid Plus!. This is a serviceable, fun update to the paddle-and-ball-bouncing games which would be more at home on a smart-phone or tablet, but if you're like me and have neither, you can't go wrong with this version. I would love to see Square Enix bring an HD version to the Wii U with live leader boards and online competition.

3D MahJongg7
Jun 2, 2013
As the British are wont to say, "It does exactly what it says on the tin." 3D **** a Shanghai-rules mahjong game, and it is in 3D. This is straightforward, few-frills tile-matching, with a decent little soundtrack and a good variety of tile and background themes. Like other similar titles, 3D **** a bit with how to make best use of stereoscopic 3D on the Nintendo 3DS; I find myself usually playing with the 3D effect turned off. Use of the lower touch screen for matching tiles works well. Fans of the genre which is almost as old as computer gaming itself should be satisfied, particularly with the optional "rivers" rules for an added challenge.
