Pitch perfect tone, interesting characters and a branching repayable storyline. Really one of the best offerings on the handheld.

I was really excited about this but to put things as simply as possible and not overlong like the combat is, the game is simply a chore to play. The combat philosophy seems to be to remove control from the player as much as it can get away with. The maps require an exhausting amount of running back and forth for dialogue so simplistic and shallow it borders on machine generated. It's just... Not good.

Very little inventive features. Frame rate issues and a clunky online sticker system. The worst aspect is arguably the narrative that says nothing and does nothing but trot out the franchise cliches without charm. It feels like the game is a labor of begrudging obligation.

Destiny 22

Destiny 2 starts excellently; giving weight, drama and suspense to the plot from the first few seconds. Then immediately abandons all of that and becomes a run from point A to point B and fight three waves of the same enemies you've been fighting since 2014. It has some upticks, but is mostly the same mundane interactions, bad writing, and limp delivery up to the end. The DLCs are expensive and deliver next to nothing of value. Once again they try to pitch the third expansion outside the season pass as the miracle cure, for just another $40... oh but this time you also will want to spend another $30 to stay relevant with the annual pass. Bringing the necessary total to keep playing the game in season 2 to $170. It's not worth it. Not by any stretch. Save your money and more importantly save your time.

Destiny 2: Warmind1
Jun 6, 2018
Bungie has cemented itself as the token of everything sour in the video games industry. Warmind is insultingly short and adds only two new enemies to the game. One is an acolyte with a slightly longer range weapon. And one is a worm boss at the end of the hour long campaign. You could argue that the knights are new because they're carrying a shield now sometimes. That's it... The story missions are recycled as the strikes. The highlight event of the DLC doesn't have matchmaking of course so people need to cheat the games world lobby system to play it. Bungie seems to think time gating level ups is more content just because it means slower progression. The raid lair is fine, but at this point having been to leviathan and doing all the other raids, the trick is wearing thin. It's more labor than obligation than fun to go through. The announcement of the next expansion makes it clear that Bungie put zero effort into the first two so it could sell the third, un-included in the season pass as the fix. They did this with Taken King and it earned them profit. Knowing this, they're never going to drag this franchise off the floor and make it decent. Abandon hope all ye who enter. This franchise is a lost cause.

Destiny: The Dark Below3
Dec 9, 2014
I've played a lot of hours in Destiny. I've platinum'd the game and now I've played the expansion. However, if not for the friendships that functioned like duct tape on a dying engine I would have long ago scrapped this game. This expansion fails in almost every way that the main game fails. The narrative is lazily told not shown during loading screens. The common thread is that Crota is big and bad and yet like all other Destiny bosses seems content hanging about his home in his pajamas waiting for guardians to storm the gates and kill all of his friends. The story missions are laughably short and retread patrol maps again rather then adding content (with the exception of a short part of one mission and a short part of the strike). Fortunately for me (though maybe not), I had the seasons pass included with the game but for many others this release actually subtracted from the base game rather than adding on top of it. For players without the expansion they are now occasionally shorted weekly missions like this weeks nightfall (one of the only missions with sizable rewards). On top of that all previous armors and weapons see enemy and new weapon stat inflation rendering them obsolete. Knowing that this will happen again when the next one releases in mere months **** out all motivation to continue. What's more mind boggling is that in a game with so many issues Bungie has decided to add even more forms of currency to limit armor purchases in game by restricting vendor items to require an item that takes grinding out faction reputation. In a game where a 4 minute patrol rewards 10 reputation and guilds require 5000 to level up, you're looking at a minimum of two hours of nonstop hyperefficient grinding just to buy a single item WITHOUT even accounting for the second and third currency required (marks and glimmer). It's too bad too because once again the raid is beautiful in tone, atmosphere, and intensity. Outside that though there just isn't anything here. The game somehow feels even smaller now.

Absolute garbage. And not for the reasons you would expect. I'm not here to attack the aesthetic. In fact that's about the only thing it has going for it. This is the sort of game made to codify the inaccessibility of fighting games. Game critics looking to garner street cred for being "hardcore" and fighting fans that have been spending weeks learning how to work through "Sleepwalking" mode will be able to smugly sit on their thrones sneering at the rest of us but to anyone else it's a frustrating time-sink. Controls aren't "tight" they're stiff. There are only a handful of characters, none of which are even remotely interesting in terms of characterization or play-style. Story mode is short and stupid. I'm not going to recommend a different fighting game over this. Pretty much any will do.

There's more good than bad here and the game has a lot of charm. What it lacks in some ways is ambition. Good: Battle graphics are outstanding and a huge boost from Black and White. Huge variety of monsters from various generations available immediately. Online multiplayer is better than it has ever been. It's easy to trade and battle strangers on the spot. Though there are less options for rule-sets than perhaps there should be and the battle room seems to refuse allowing full 6 monster teams. Breeding is easier and more clear than ever and training monsters to their potential is much more intuitive with mini games. Tons of items, abilities and core gameplay options to personalize your team of favorites. A new type that challenges the dominance of certain types. Bad: Too few new pokemon as well as too few Mega options, many of which are lent to the already most powerful monsters in the game. In total, the lowest number of new pokemon in a game. Metagame is not even remotely balanced to the point where community battle simulators provide a more entertaining experience. Story is almost nonexistent. The antagonistic team is crunched into two short back to back sequences which are resolved by non-player characters off screen after you battle the villains. Pacing is poor, aforementioned flare sequence and the oddly spaced gyms. Early gyms being very far apart and having pokemon level caps too close for comfort before they cease listening and later gyms being crammed narrowly together. Many characters are unremarkable and easily forgettable, including the finale battles. Side characters continue to be a nuisance chopping up progression. Post game content is a shadow compared to some previous gens. Though at face value there may seem to be more negatives posted above, the severity of most of the negatives isn't crippling and what the game does well it does very well. I look forward to the next addition where the foundation made for XY expedites a more content packed follow-up.

Resident Evil 64
Mar 4, 2014
Resident Evil 6 is a game that requires an extensive autopsy to make sense of. It had some positive introductions but largely suffered most from easily avoidable production oversights. The good: Resident Evil 6 starts by establishing its tone very well. We may not know Helena well in the tutorial but we feel the graveness of the situation immediately. It does feel like it has promise. The graphics and character captures are brilliantly done once again. The voice acting as well is some of the industry's best delivering somewhat less impressive lines. The concept of interwoven stories is exciting and had much opportunity for a completed picture of the grand scale events. And there is much in terms of gameplay time. Between the three modes and the mercenaries bonus material, there is much time that can be sunk into the endeavor granted the player has patience to suffer through the flaws. Solid drama in the Chris ending. Interesting environmental designs and aesthetic. Enemy design was mostly good with the occasionally tiring appearance of gun toting enemies. Boss fights included, though the resilience of certain characters is cartoonish. The negatives: The plot is entirely incoherent, beyond plausible and even in violation of established canon in some parts. Poor design choices that should have been realized in production were left in the game for quantity rather than quality. Examples of this are quick time button sequences that are not clear. Constant poorly implemented vehicle sections. Chase sequences with fickle or erratic camera work. Occasions where an environmental factor was highlights without enemy movement paused leading to deaths beyond the players control. Co-op lag issues in online play and extensive disconnects early into release in sections like the Snake battle. Checkpoints that are unreasonably spread out making S ranks more of a time consuming chore than a challenge, especially on higher difficulty modes like "No Hope". Mercenaries becomes routine and predictable with rinse repeat combat and counter spamming. Even breaking 1.2 million points fails to feel rewarding as a result. Cash grab alternative multiplayer modes essentially amount to trophy purchasing (48% of all trophies are DLC, an almost unheard of amount). Constant interruptive sequences break game pacing and seem to be ashamed of the main combat. Inventory is slow and clunky compared to Re5 which had simple quick switching and tactical reloading for mastery. Exploiting the switch mechanic is game breaking in providing perfect aim at huge distances and no recoil shots especially in Mercenaries. A complete failing in any understanding of how PTSD works and amnesia/body double/cloning cliches to move plot. Characters act in ways they shouldn't with their established history. Arbitrary skills introduced to justify sequences (Piers the expert driver). Weapon upgrading and shop system dumbed down to extremes with the skill system replacement. Overall, the game is serviceable but not in any way enjoyable. It 'mostly' functions the way it should have but lacks polish and even more so fails in some ways that should have been obvious in quality assurance. A big production with a little cohesiveness. A cleaner, tighter, smarter followup is what the franchise desperately needs at this point.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag8

A wealth of content and nice colorful graphics and atmosphere (a nice contrast from earlier gen titles on PS3). The game isn't a true next gen game but the load times are relatively short, there's a wealth of content and occasionally there's a feel good sensation of successful play. Upgrades make a true sense of progression and new play toys. The downside is clunky controls that will often cause screw-ups. Run and climb are tied to one button and the character will often get stuck breaking momentum and climbing during a chase if they get too near a wall. Combat is reduced to waiting for enemies attack to make a parry-riposte which other enemies will wait for you to finish. Characters are likable even if the plot seems meandering. Overall a good game to play while you wait for more dedicated PS4 games.

Some of the lighting effects and sounds are pretty well done. Graphically the textures on walls and the filters look pretty good on the ps4. The "monster" designs look less furbished. The real issue is the gameplay. What would perhaps be terrifying to a person who rarely plays games serves little spook to someone who does. What would be scary comes off more frustrating and inconvenient than spooky. Sequences are predictable from surveying rooms prior to activating a flag. Knowing a monster can't find you but won't leave would draw tension to someone who doesn't have a grasp for mechanics but to any familiar player feels more like a loading screen before they can move again. The limited battery life leads you to conserve in safe areas and bumble into furniture for longer than you'd care to while saving battery for the times where it'll actually be needed rather than convenient. Games free for ps+. If it wasn't I'd strongly recommend against it. If you have plus than it comes down to how much you feel your time is worth.

This game is better than I expected. Combat is mostly pretty smooth and still feels pretty good when you play on higher difficulties and pull something elegant off. It's much easier on the whole though. There are very very few real bosses and none of them are really at all difficult. Odd for a game that's entirely action based. The atmosphere is excellent in terms of visuals, stage design is creative but platforming is simple and less imaginative. The characters range from bland to somewhat likable but Dante is cringe worthy until about the middle where he sort of fades out. The plot is simple and paced fairly well. Plus it was the rental for last month so not a bad deal for ps+ users. For free you might as well try it if you like action and have time. Otherwise, it's something you can afford to miss.

Entirely defective. I can't get the game to detect a single person. I know it's not the camera because it worked in the playroom. Don't buy this game by any means. And shame on the reviewers for giving a game that entirely fails to function anything other than a zero. If ever there were a greater example of publisher to reviewer payola this would be it. The person in the corner is a broken mess of pixels that doesn't look remotely human and will score perfects even as it can't detect you.

To call it excellent would be disingenuous. GTA V is a good game. It has very high quality banter going between characters most of the game and it does have a wealth of content. Main story missions are somewhat varied even if all of the side missions are mind numbingly generic. The game suffers from occasional pop-ins, a still inept multiplayer experience, and the famous jack of all trades master of none phenomenon. You can do anything which often feels a lot like nothing. Ultimately, I sunk a week into it and have no inspiration to continue the game. Not something I'm fond of with full price games. Get it on a sale or in an inevitable bundle some day.

I have some bias in that I'm willing to play shoot 'em ups but I never dedicate the same amount of time to them as other genres. Resogun is genuinely fun and no added cost for PS+ makes it senseless not to get it. The game play is charmingly simple with some room for player skill progression, slow-mo scenes are infectiously exciting and fist pumping but if you don't like the genre you probably won't stick with it much. There's not a ton of content beyond getting better at the game through practice. It's a genre piece to its core. Pretty and fun but simple.
