The Last of Us Part II Remastered

Really shouldn't be called a remaster, more just a PS5 port with some extra goodies. But those extra goodies are more than worth the $10 upgrade fee and for people buying and playing the game for the first time, those PS5 upgrades make an already stellar game even better.

Would maybe be interested in slogging through the painfully dull story if the combat wasn't also equally uniteresting to due to how painfully easy the game is. After Yoshi P bragged about how the game was finished months ago and wouldn't need a day one patch you would think the games performance would be able to atleast hold a somewhat consistant 60fps in what is supposed to be a fast paced action game but I guess that's simply expecting too much from this team. Probably the only good thing about the game are it's visuals and the games impressive boss fights. The sheer spectacle of these fights combined with an outstanding soundtrack make these fights feel truly epic, they're also some of the few fights in the game that don't immediately melt to mindlessly spamming your abilities and actually seem fairly well balanced for the games mechanics, unlike regular and "elite" enemies which make up the majority of the games combat. Unfortunately they're too few and far and simply aren't worth putting up with the meandering busy work the game puts in between them.

Extremely charming puzzle game. Made by the same devs that made Tetris effect and Rez so as you might expect the music and visuals are unique, charming and memorable. For me personally the puzzles were at that perfect difficulty that takes a little time without being frustrating and the solution's were always satisfying. The last optional puzzle in particular was very hard but the payoff was amazing when I finally figured out what the solution was, I almost couldn't believe it, it was so clever.

Actually worse than the original game. Yes this remake looks pretty but the gameplay has been completely butchered. Joel takes twice as long to do everything, making him feel sluggish and unresponsive. Swapping weapons, aiming, crouching, picking up items, climbing over ledges are all noticeably slower. Guns have much slower fire rates and there are a ton of ledges and objects you could climb or vault over in the original which you just can't anymore. Melee combat is straight up broken, extremely common for Joel to lock on to an enemy when starting his Melee animation only to completely whiff or the enemy simply doesn't get staggered, especially apparent when doing a sprint Melee on a clicker with a weapon (this usually gets u killed as a result). A handful of mechanics from Part 2 have just been haphazardly thrown into this remake without any thought, (I like part 2's gameplay a lot, but that game has completely different balance and mechanics than this game) and some minor mechanics from the original have been taken out. A lot of balance decisions just feel off, like they were made so they could say they made changes from the original game even if they were for the worse. Ai is far smarter and more aggresive (Again I assume to be more like Part 2's) which should be a good thing but with Joel being nerfed to hell and far slower to control, the game on harder difficulties ends up being far harder then the original but in a way that is far more frustrating than fun. Game is also far buggier than the original, it's obviously been awhile since I've played the og game at launch and some of this stuff will but patched, but it definitely feels like I'm running into more bugs then the og or remaster at launch. I know I'm literally the only person in existence who likes Last of us 1 for it's gameplay but at the end of the day this $70 remake is supposed to be the definitive version and it is anything but. Definitely don't recommend until they patch some of these issues along with a severe price drop. Unfortunately I assume some of these decisions were made to make Joel feel more "realistic" so probably won't be changed. Very disappointing.

Probably one of the best pack in games with any console. Incredibly charming and fun. Does a great job of showing off what the console and controller can do while still being enjoyable all on it's own merits. Extremely excited to see more from this team.

Disgusting scam ****. $70 full priced game with absurdly priced microtransactions, and as if that wasn't enough, the recent update lowered payouts of races to furthur push their MTX BS. Sony's greed knows no end. Also online only DRM ****.

I understand this is a remake but the simple fact is the souls genre has grown dramatically over the decade since this game released and it would have been nice to see some of that implemnted in this $70 "modern" remake. Bosses are painfully easy, Limited movesets, brain dead ai, easily cheesed. I don't think there is a single boss that comes even close to being as interesting of a fight as even the starting fights of dark souls 3 or bloodbourne. The healing system is beyound broken, they've made minor changes but it's really just a band aid on a system that (again) later souls systems improved on (even blodbournes blood vials system is better). I understand that this is a very faithful reamke but for the asking price there's simply not enough improved. Would have loved to see an option to either play the game as it orignally was for the diehard fans or a version of the campaign with bluepoints own touches to make it feel truly modern and unique (and again for $70 I don't think that's asking too much). They instead tried to split the diffrence and it doesn't really work imo. Thankfully the original game is still fun despite it's glaring problems and the game is certainly pretty.

The new story content unfortunately falls pretty flat with a lot of rehashed content. But I still give this dlc a 9 becuase the dlc boss fights are actually some of the best fights in any action rpg period and with kingdom hearts long history of excellent super boss fights I do not say that lightly. If you care about good KH combat/bosses give this dlc a go. Even if you were disapointed by kh3's combat at launch like I was I would still say give this a go becuase it really is amazing how much this games combat has improved.

Most fun I had was getting kicked from team killing my own team mates, at least that gave me something to shoot at (the games just endless running otherwise). I can somewhat respect the devs dedication to such a hardcore and "realistic" shooter but that doesn't mean I can find it fun. Also the tutorials are just dreadful. Literal text documents where you sit and read paragraphs of writing to understand how the game works. When you have an in depth game like this a good tutorial is a must to avoid frustration and this completely fails at that.

Everytime I get on I quit the game frustrated due to the games terrible lobbies refusing to let me play against people standing right in front of me, which can seemingly only be fixed by quitting the game and relaunching, which is a painfully slow process even on PS5 due to how long it takes for the game to communicate to the server on start up. The game is very fun when u can play against other people, but with the current online state combined with a pretty slim selection of single player options no reason to buy the game in it's current state.

it's truly baffling how Intelligent Systems can clearly put so much time, care and effort into making this lovelingly crafted (and at times increadibly beautiful) paper craft world while simultanously putting so little thought into making the game actually fun and interesting.

The last of us 1 is one of my favorite games of all time, I seriously can't express how much I didn't want a sequel to it, and how worried I was leading up to TLOU2. After finishing it though, I can safely say I haven't felt this way about a game since last of us 1. The gameplay improvements at first seem rather small but each new addition builds on the last games mechanics in surprising and fun ways. Probably the biggest improvement over the first game is the level design, levels are much bigger with multiple ways to clear most areas and so much thought and detail had been put into the environment. The graphics and sound design are astounding. The story isn't quite as good as the first games (near perfect) story, but it is still such an amazing, rich, beautiful character driven story, and the fact that people are calling this game sad and depressing is genuinely shocking to me. Yes this game is dark at times but the struggle between the light and dark within both it's characters and plot is what makes this game so compelling.

Keep in mind for this review I haven't beaten the game, however I am over 15 hours in and I just can't play anymore. The Pacing and story are an absolute mess. The characters are fun, diverse and likable, thanks to both the fantastic artwork and some good comedic writing but they unfortunately never grow or develop in any meaningful way (this unfortunately even applies to the main character Ajna) The initial RPG combat is fun and fast paced, but unfortunately once you get more then a couple hours in it completely stagnates and doesn't really develop any further. Combined with some pretty poor balancing, there ends up being just a handful of options/characters that are obviously superior to the majority of other options, which takes away a lot of the fun in experimenting (not to mention some side characters appear to not even be finished, one character I found doesn't even have a basic super move and yet still takes from the iddhi meter when u do the inputs for her super) Similar things can be said for the platforming. While initially rather fun, it quickly becomes tedious. The majority of upgrades later on don't really flow or string together like you would hope, it's more solitary moves that u use individually and ends up feeling like a big game of match the square peg into the square hole. Probably the biggest problem I have with this game though is the backtracking. For a game with a story so blisteringly fast that it barely dwells on any significant story moment for more than a few lines of dialogue, it sure doesn't mind wasting your time with backtracking. A few hours into the game u gain the ability to sail to 3 distinct locations. After an hour or so at one of these locations you'll gain a new ability you can use to go even further into the area only for you to find you need the ability from one of the other 3 areas to progress any further. So you now need to head all the way back your ship, undoing all the progress u just did in that area in order to sail to one of the other 2 locations, get an hour or so into that area, get the ability, backtrack. Now after you have all the necessary abilities. You can THEN progress through any of the 3 areas you want however you have to start all the way back at your ship, meaning all the time spent obtaining the first ability of that area must be redone. Keep in mind there are no warp points or shortcuts opened up so you have to do almost ALL of it again, same as the first visit. It's absolutely maddening. An especially egregious cause of forced backtracking is after clearing one of the 3 areas you forced to go from almost the exact end of the level ALL the way back to your ship. Meaning you have to redo a large portion of the area you just beat but now in reverse. Thankfully the other two areas drop you off near the start of the area once you’ve completed them, but then why not do the same for all 3 instead of wasting the players time? This is then followed by you returning to a reused area from the first few hours of the game, which is THEN followed by you returning to the 3 area's I just talked about AGAIN. I understand these beautifully drawn assets take a lot of time, but it is completely unacceptable how much backtracking and redoing of the exact same platforming challenges and how much fighting of the exact same enemies is required in this game. And that's where I stopped playing. Maybe I'm completely wrong and every problem I have from then on gets fixed, but I'm certainly not sticking with the game to find out, and I don't recommend you do either.
