Indiana Jones and the Great Circle5

The exploration / puzzle elements are a bit on the weak side but the combat is really weak!
The UI is confusing and the controls are awkward. The voice acting good and the music is top notch but as a game, it's frustrating and not very compelling. I love the movies and was looking forward to a worthwhile adventure... Nostalgia tried to make me overcome its shortcomings but I gave up on it after 5h :(

Elden Ring8
Mar 6, 2022
Let me start by saying I'm not a Soulsborne fan... I like difficult games but I can't stand being made to repeat 20+ minutes of drudgery just to get back to the boss that killed me! That's where Elden Ring makes the game so much more accessible!
Not only are there sensible checkpoints in this game but thanks to the open world design, you can mostly run past difficulty spike foes and come back for them when you've levelled up. A few of my Soulsborne gripes are withstanding... You still need to grind/farm to level up and you need to rely heavily on Google/YouTube to figure out how to do stuff, so I've knocked a couple of points off for those irks.

Taiko no Tatsujin: The Drum Master!7
Jan 28, 2022
The same fun drumming game you know and love... Just not as generous.
Maybe the fact that it went straight to Game Pass had something to do with that..? Drum n Fun (Switch): 74 songs
Drum Session (PS4): 74 songs
Drum Master (Xbox): 55 songs There's a few oddities like 'Last Christmas" and "I Want You Back" but a lot of the Pop, Namco and Vocaloid favourites are missing. The feature set and game modes seem to be identical to the others mentioned but the layout is much more like Drum n Fun. One thing I will say is that the Xbox pad seems ill fitting for this particular game - the D-pad is too low for extended play and is a little stiff. You can of course change the controls (Type 2 is my preferred anyway).

Sackboy: A Big Adventure6
Jun 27, 2021
The presentation is brilliant, the music is sublime, the voice acting is good and the control is just OK.
The thing that knocked most of those points off is the obsession with auto-scrolling levels in this game! Auto-scrolling levels are the worst part of any platformer (as they deny you the chance to explore) and they're something that you tolerate in tiny doses, when the rest of the game is great but nearly 50 % of the levels in Sackboy feature auto-scrolling!
So, what could have been an absolute classic is a instead a very missable experience :(

If you have VR, you need this game! It's exactly the chilled, boundless exploration experience I've been after ever since I bought PSVR... The comfort options available should keep almost everyone happy (I don't do well with VR locomotion but I've had a few 5 hour sessions without ill feelings). The VR and non-VR additions / enhancements to the game over the past 3 years (and the passage of time) will dictate that you start afresh but in doing so, you get the full experience at the pace you're meant to absorb it. The non-VR additions have fleshed out the single player and multiplayer gameplay into bigger and more varied experiences and are worth returning for, even if you don't have VR. There have been bugs but Hello Games have been quick and diligent to address them. The VR mode is blurry (even on the Pro) but it doesn't detract from the experience too much. Despite all the hate they have received, HG have continued to work at this with little to no income stream (PS4) to produce a game that surpassed it's original goals by a long way. A Pro Patch (to reduce the blurriness) would knock my score up to 10.

Aug 29, 2019
Great space shooter with a cheesy but fun story - The graphics, sound and gameplay are spot on! The control takes a little getting used to (type C layout is best) but it doesn't take very long to acclimatise. Considering the game can be picked up for about a fiver (it's included in Game Pass), it's a whole lot of enjoyable gaming for the money... I just wish it had a VR mod because I enjoy playing ES more than Eve Valkyrie!

Battlefield V5
Aug 29, 2019
BFV is a distinctly average game. It plays a lot more like CoD these days, favouring smaller game modes, where fastest finger wins and there's no room for strategic play. They even reduced the squad size to 4 so you can't play as well together either. The content at launch was very small and the content since then has been slow to come and unimpressive - mostly additional small game modes, Fortnight mode (Firestorm) and finally 1 extra (badly designed) map. The game is graphically impressive, the soundtrack is good and the single player campaign is ok so it's not all bad... it's just not what a Battlefield game should be.

Beats Fever8
May 24, 2019
Beats Fever is Music Gun Gun for VR... It's a fun game that plays a little differently to other rhythm games - rather than striking on the note, you need to make sure your Move controller is in the right location when the note hits you... Once you understand that, it's a lot of fun. The music choice is a little EDM-heavy but there's a variety of styles to choose from - the advertised "40" tracks is more like 25-30 as some of the tracks are re-used for the harder difficulties. It's no Beat Saber but it's a lot better than Happy Drummer or Audio Beats and if you set yourself up a Far East PSN account (Indonesia is cheapest), you can pick it up for a touch over £5.

SUPERBEAT: XONiC3
Jul 2, 2018
Way too frantic and nearly impossible to hit the correct direction on the analog sticks. There's a few decent tracks which lift the score up a little but I can't see how anyone other that a coked-up octopus would get enjoyment from the gameplay. Hatsune Miku looks and plays a lot better than this, despite the low song count. Loads times, disk space requirements and GUI all poor - avoid unless you're a masochistic amphetamine addict with an allergy to animation!

Without a doubt, a beautiful recreation of the original, finally realised on the hardware it was conceived for. However, there was an opportunity to FIX the controls of the original (not just reassign the buttons) which loses it a mark outright. The other lost mark is nobody's fault but time... There was a time that so much uneventful travel was enjoyable but those days are gone (The Witcher 3 has a rule that something interesting must happen every 40s) so I must measure the game by today's standards. I loved every other part of the game - a worthy 8/10 :)

Undertale8
Jan 31, 2018
What can I say about Undertale that already hasn't been said... so I'll just mention difference of the PS4 version... The visuals, story, gameplay and music are all on par with the PC version but the implemented trophies are way too easy - You don't even have to finish the game to get the Platinum! You just need enough money for the 15 Dognation Trophies (you can quit the game after getting the last Dognation trophy, keeping your money on your saved game) and to REACH the final area - you don't even have to enter it. They should have locked at least one trophy against each completion imo but trophy hunters will at least be happy.

After trying the demo, I wasn't going to buy the full game but while PSN had a misprice, I decided to pick it up and I'm really glad I did :) The thing that put me off the demo was the combat system but it turned out that it was one of the strongest parts of the game, once I gave it enough time. It's neither turn-based, nor full ARPG, something in between... What turned out to be great was the fact that you are given a pause in the action which gives you an opportunity to use libra/scan to devise the best strategy and gifted the ability to switch out your party's gear and spells to suit the foes you're fighting. In previous FF games, you'd have to lose the battle before being able to change anything. Many people have criticised that all you do is hold circle throughout fights - these people haven't taken on any challenging foes yet - you certainly can't take on some of the later bosses without near constant blocking, waiting for the opportunity to attack. The graphics are gorgeous and the story is good too. The skills (fishing, photography, etc) are irrelevant but diverting if you want more out of your game. The thing that let the game down is the main characters - they look like a K-Pop band and act in a mostly repugnant nature. They in no way make you care about them. Noct grows as a character towards the end of the game but not much and not convincingly. The only main character I felt any warmth towards was Ignis (no pun intended). It's only the fact that I bought the game digitally that I put in the effort to find a real gem of an ARPG but if I had bought the disc, I'm not sure I'd have put the effort in and would have traded it in quickly, with an altogether different opinion of the game.

The Last Guardian8
Mar 17, 2017
Pros The story is fantastic - despite the lack of conversation, I found myself really invested in the welfare of the protagonists and feeling genuinely concerned whenever Trico got hurt. The puzzles vary from quite easy to devilishly difficult. The game looks very nice (usually in strong sunlight) but the graphics can be beaten. The sound and soundtrack set the scene very well. Cons There were quite a few occasions where I couldn't get Trico to do what I wanted... to the point that I assumed I'd missed something and had to refer to a walkthrough, only to have it confirmed that what I wanted to do was correct. There were a few camera control issues (while trying to climb Trico in enclosed areas) but no worse than other games in its ilk. Overall, I thought it was a really lovely game, had an involving story, looked pretty and had a lovely soundtrack which was complemented by an infrequent Japanese narrative. Controlling Trico was sometimes very frustrating so I had to drop 2 marks for taking the polish off an otherwise great game. You can complete the game in a couple of sittings so I recommend that you buy a physical copy so that you can trade it in afterwards as there's not much to offer in terms of replay (unless you're a trophy hound).

Batman: The Telltale Series5
Jan 24, 2017
As this is a story-based game, I'm going to split the review into story and gameplay... Story: 8/10 The story didn't draw me in straight away as everyone knows this particular protagonist but as the story progressed, the twists and plot helped me understand that I didn't know THIS Batman very well at all. All of the characters you know are there but this is a very fresh story that builds into something very unique that holds your attention well. Gameplay: 3/10 Unfortunately, gameplay is where marks are drastically lost... I'm no stranger to TTG (Tales From The Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us are 2 of my all-time favourite games) so I wasn't expecting much in the way of gameplay but it's the flakiest bugfest TTG have had the cheek to release! There's graphical glitches all over the place, the sound and video regularly go out of sync, QTEs expire before they appear and it crashes so often that you feel using the disc as a batarang! I'm playing v1.05 so God knows what the previous versions were like - The residents of Arkham Asylum are more stable! Overall: 5/10 The story was just good enough for me to bear with the technical shortfalls of this game but I would recommend staying away from the PS4 version until all the bugs have been worked out.

Battlefield 19
Nov 7, 2016
This is exactly what the series needed! BF3 & BF4 were great but the series needed something new... and cops & robbers wasn't that thing ;) Graphics The game looks amazing, from the textures to the particle effects - a true next-gen Battlefield game! Motion capture has been used for the cut-scenes which makes the characters look far more realistic and expressive. Sound The return to a classical score adds to the drama and suits the era well. The voice acting is mixed - the foreign and British voices come across well but the American actors are terrible! The shots, flame, explosions, vehicles and soldier banter all sound great... the horse sample however, is terrible! It sounds like The Sugar Hill Gang are scratching it :p Gameplay I wasn't alone in being concerned about the weapons and vehicles that were used in WW1 but fortunately, Dice decided to drop historical accuracy in favour of playability which (pedantry aside) was the right choice. The weapons are mostly usable but the class restrictions can be limiting. Mortars are great for defending objective-based games. Sentry kits are a nice addition, available to pick up in certain spots in the game, they give you a unique weapon setup and armour. There's anti-tank, flame-thrower and a very powerful and rapid SMG. There's a decent selection of tanks and aircraft (if you can find them) but the bike is atrocious. The horse is a nice addition but overpowered - you can charge against 10 guns and come out mostly unharmed. It's annoying however when your horse gets stuck on a random bit of scenery as standing still will get you killed very quickly. The Reinforcement vehicle (Train / Dreadnought / Blimp) is another nice addition - the idea is to grant the ailing side a chance of getting back into the game with a powerful armoured vehicle... I've seen it turn the battle a few times but mostly, it's poorly utilised by a selfish pilot who just wants to boost their own kill count, rather than getting close enough to the necessary base so that all gun emplacements can be used effectively. They need to take the most powerful gun away from the pilot seat to fix this. There's a decent selection of maps but after just 2 weeks, I'm already thirsting for more. There's the usual CQ, Rush, Domination and Deathmatch game modes but couple of new modes: War Pigeons and Operations. War Pigeons is a close-quarter fight where you have to acquire a pigeon and stay alive long enough for you to attach & release a message - a bit of fun for 10 minutes but no lasting appeal for me. Operations is immense! It's what Rush should be. It's a multi-stage Rush-style game where you have to capture and retain all bases in a sector - if you do, you clear out remaining defensive forces and push on to the next sector, signalled by trench whistles and the rousing cheers of your countrymen - if you fail, you get 2 more pushes but importantly, you get a reinforcement vehicle after a failed push. It's incredibly tough to complete Operations when attacking (especially the 3-stage "Oil of Empires") but it's the best addition to Battlefield game modes in a very long time. The single-player "War Stories" are very good and definitely worth playing. Summary If you only buy one FPS this year, make it BF1! Occasional glitches (going under the map or being unable to shoot), server and squad joining issues prevent me from giving it a 10 but it's the most functional BF game at release that I can remember.

Overwatch7
Oct 4, 2016
It's a fun game for a few hours but I don't get why Overwatch is so loved, past the 1st week... The character diversity is good but gameplay doesn't innovate much from any other 12-men-in-a-box format. Add the fact that there's no offline mode and it's looks like a very expensive proposition for a game with such a short lifespan. If you can pick up a physical copy cheap, have a go for yourself but don't buy digital because you'll likely trade it in shortly afterwards.

The Golf Club8
Sep 8, 2016
Not perfect by some way but a very good golf sim by all accounts... If you're used to arcade golf games, the game is punishing to start with, offering very little in the way of helpers to account for wind / height / undulation and it will take a few rounds before you start getting the putting power right... Stick with it though and it will all start to feel very natural and organic and far more rewarding than any other golf game, where you essentially cheat by adding after-touches to a poor shot (who in real life can put backspin on a driver anyway?) The offline game is brilliant but there are bugs with online multiplayer; dropping out to the main menu sometimes, a 10-20 second lag between a friend taking a shot on you watching it, tournaments losing running scores between courses and sometimes, a friend's put will go in on your screen, even though they actually missed (and vice versa). The Collector's edition gives you tours which helps drive you through progressively more and more difficult courses to hone your skills but sadly don't offer anything in the way of character progression. The built-in editor gives nearly limitless content (some better than others) via user-created content so there's a lot of replay value in the game. Definitely worth the ~£10 you can pick this up for these days - the sequel isn't out for 6 months and may not even improve on this!

No Man's Sky8
Aug 12, 2016
Not perfect but it's certainly not a bad game... A lot of the negative scores on here are from idiots who bought into the hype which the game ultimately didn't live up to. The game delivers on what it set out to, back before Sony's media machine changed this from a £20 Indie into a £50 AAA. Look and feel: The ultra-colourful 70s style sci-fi art and explorative theme are a breath of fresh air after all the moodily lit dystopian shooters that have hit the console since its launch. There are some graphical quirks when coming down onto the planet and some of the textures look low-res up-close but based on the fact that these are procedurally generated, they should be forgiven. The soundtrack complements the game well and the sound effects work well. Gameplay: The exploration of new worlds is an incredible experience to start with but does become a little repeatative after 20 or so worlds. Also, the variances in their algorythms begin to get stretched at the same marker, as the flora & fauna begin to look a little familiar. Shooting on the ground isn't great and not loads better in the skies but it's not the reason for playing this game... Trading & building your language skills is strangely compelling as you move from system to system but the inventory system is a patch or two away from being workable. Summary: If you're open to new experiences and have a penchant for 70's sci-fi, you'll love it... If you want a solid space shoot-em-up with a strong story line, Destiny may be more your thing.

Marmite game. You'll love it or hate it and nothing anyone else says will change that. If you're into Dark Souls, you'll love it. If not, you'll quickly learn if you're into Dark Souls. Despite soooo many glowing reviews and recommendations, I found the tedium of replaying the last 30 minutes of hack n slash every time you die, just to die again 2 minutes later than before (or worse, on your way through old ground) completely unacceptable in this day. Sparse checkpoints isn't "punishing", it's just plain irritating. It's one of those games you're supposed to love and you feel guilty or even mistaken for disliking it... "Maybe I didn't give it enough effort?"... 5 hours in and I deleted it from my hdd, it was that irritating.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End9
May 13, 2016
Fantastic from start to end - the story, voice and motion capture acting, graphics and music were all top notch! The shooting is improved but still weak so I've knocked a point off for that. The control was sometimes a little twitchy and the puzzles were a tad easy but not so bad as to knock another point off. Multiplayer is based on the weakest dynamic in the game (shooting) and it brings nothing new to the 10-men-in-a-box table so I'm never going to play it - if you're buying the game for MP, knock another point off. It's sad that story-based games have to include a multiplayer option at all IMO but I guess that it's to stop everyone trading it in as soon as they've played through the story.

Ignore the 10's, they're on drugs - Ignore the 0's, they've run out of drugs. It's a bit of a 'meh' game, let down by a rigid multiplayer model, poor control and annoying recharge delays. Lots of great additions in this game such as Commander & integration with phone apps but the stability is shocking! Lots of bugs hamper gameplay too (1-shot kills, spawn trapping and zero spawn-protection). Changing the controls between BF3 & BF4 hasn't enamoured many (I've gotten used to them) but WHY have they changed them again between platforms? (aim/shoot is L1/R1 on PS3 but L2/R2 on PS4 and it's NOT changeable) In 3 months, I'm sure that this game will be great but right now, it's marred.
