Look I’m probably being really vain and one sided here but I hate this show so much. Aside from great acting and an amazing score Watchmen by Alan Moore is not something that needs a sequel or a retelling or what have you. I feel like this show would’ve done better had it not been attached to the Watchmen ip, I swear the show started as an original concept and hbo knew it would underperform so they looked at what ip they had lying around and just slapped Watchmen in the title and reworked the story to fit in with the universe. Show ****.

The critic consensus is nearly right and the user consensus is clearly filled with russian botfarmed trolls and fox news poisoned chuds hiding behind the veneer of very authentic alan moore fan (tm). This show's amazing to watch listen to and ponder on. Soundtrack is flawless. Plotlines are very close to home and timely. If you havent watched this you do not know what you're doing with your life.

DONT BELIEVE the critic reviews…. This show is utter garbage and does not deserve a better rating than the Snyder movie. I literally stopped watching it at episode one due to how far it derails from the source material. Everything that made the comic amazing is lost with this show. This show exists to use the fame of watchmen to sell a run of the mill cop drama about blatant racism.Media like this makes you wish for the days when critics did their freaking job! What is point of a review if not to steer people to watching praiseworthy shows or films? Todays critics believe reviews should praise minority representation, and leftist idealogies regardless of whether or not the film or show is good. I wish I could create a critic account to combat the sea of lies in the critic **** you want more watchmen after watching the movie, just read the comic series, they are amazing!

Against all odds, this is one of the most complete seasons of television ever. Rules so hard and in every way possible.

I wanted to watch a series referring to my favorite movie, and I got big pile of cr.p. Some idea was there, but it fell on the altar of pointless activism...

Based on the legendary 80’s graphic novel, this limited series takes place 34 years after the events of the comic and focuses on law enforcements attempts to deal with a white supremacist group known as the Seventh Kavalry who have taken up arms against the Tulsa Police Department. It’s always risky to adapt such a well revered IP (as the terrible movie showed), but Damon Lindelof and his team have done a great job of telling an original story whilst also retaining the feel of the original comics to deliver an interesting and entertaining season of television.

A well-made 'fan fiction' of what happens after the Watchmen movie (but mostly comics). This story was interestingly not from the author of the Watchmen comics so it is technically not canon. However the story and characters make me wish it was. This is a great re-imaging of what life in the world was like after the impact from the last movie. If you havent at least watched the Watchmen movie, do that first, otherwise you will be very lost. I take off two points because some parts dragged on too long, like some flashbacks, and the conclusion of some characters seemed without purpose. I'm also happy that this ends after one season and they don't try to drag it on for 5 seasons. End it while it's good! PS. For the people calling this 'woke'; I don't like forced wokeness but nothing about this is woke. It is not the real world and it doesnt pretend to be. Just because history in this world led to the clansman basically having more power in the world does not mean the show is also saying that it is also like this in the real world.

I agree with the politics in the 2019 adaptation of Watchmen. I won't sugarcoat that. I am far left of leftist and even farther left of liberal; my politics would be considered extreme by some. On paper, I agree with the sentiment found in Watchmen, specifically the study of the alt-right and the racial tensions that exist in our cities. Notice how I'm painting with broad strokes here; the show does the same. By trying to say a lot, Watchmen ends up saying a whole lot of nothing. It is the quintessential neoliberal wet dream: a strong black woman beats the **** out of the cartoonishly evil supremacist group, the big communist (because Marx is in style with the young intellectuals) beats the **** out of the cartoonishly evil supremacist group, the sigma interrogator mentally beats the **** out of the cartoonishly evil supremacist group... I'm not saying that identity politics shouldn't be studied, or that we shouldn't represent marginalized groups, or that we shouldn't envision worlds in which my ideological enemies are given their due. What I am saying is that making such sensitive issues so binary offers absolutely nothing to any existing discourse. It's reddit politics where we reduce centuries of pain and exploitation down to an easily-digestible meal that appeases the left-center libs and pisses off the right-leaning chuds who are afraid of their own shadows. It's politics for people that don't understand politics. Real racists, real bigots, real xenophobes are much more subtle: they exist right under our noses in our offices, our school boards, our management positions. Watchmen just wants to throw them all in a trailer park and have them look like dumb, poor, Facebook-posting morons. Say more. Be more ruthless with your agenda. Call out the fascist undercurrents running across America, the pedophilic conservative global elite, the transphobic elected officials advocating for genocide. Keep calling out the racism, but don't turn around and try to "both sides" police brutality by trying to make us care for cops that commit racially motivated crimes. The Flanderization of the core characters only further diminishes the message here. Sister Night is too one-note to make any analysis stick; Ozymandias is fanservice bait whose arc amounts to nothing. Dr. Manhattan is the victim of like a thousand retcons and is basically unrecognizable from the god the comics left us with. Most pertinently, though, is Rorschach; the whole Kavalry organization is a perfect study of the right's securitized view of politics with idolization and line-drawing done purely by shared interests rather than morals and values. Kavalry misunderstood Rorschach's mission and trauma much like the real-world right misunderstands people like Elon Musk, Andrew Tate, and Ron DeSantis. As for the rest of the show, it's okay. It's visual barbiturates: the edits and action sequences are meant to satisfy the blithest audiences imaginable. The show's inconsistent use of violence (we go from blowing up cows in the pilot to a horrendously choreographed police raid in ep. 2) is confusing as a fan of the original comic, since the scarcity of violence was much more impactful thematically. Characters and costumes are visually fine and the cast did the best they could with the dialogue they were given. Color grading is, as expected, poor; HBO seems to love raw lighting because they never bother to grade their damn footage. The show is never unwatchable but it does almost nothing to separate itself from similar programming visually. Imagine this show with **** tempo and blocking... man. As a sequel to the comics, Watchmen is pretty underwhelming. Lacking the nuance of the original, this series feels more like a poor contextualization rather than a necessary sequel. The characters are meant to be rooted for; there's little examination of power and justice; there are no moral conflicts aside from the obvious 'heroes vs. racists' skirmishes. Save for a few Easter eggs, there is very little carryover between the comic and the show. "Oh, look! Electric cars because of Manhattan! Oh, look! The stencil of the lovers! Oh, look! Squids!" is as far as the show wants to go. I still can't think of a single reason why Dr. Manhattan would come back to Mars after **** off to an entirely different galaxy in the comic. Watchmen is boring, genuinely. It lacks the allegorical punch that would excuse the wayward plot, and it fails to expand upon the original in any meaningful way. The milquetoast visuals do enough to keep one engaged but don't offer any style of their own. Why exactly someone thought we needed a sequel to an unadaptable comic is a mystery for sure, and it's one I'll never unravel. I don't get why Hollywood just can't leave good enough alone.

Wasted potential. I wasn't going to watch this at first because it just seemed overall uninteresting at first but after a few friends recommended it, I decided to give it a shot. While I do enjoy a few aspect and characters, specifically Looking Glass was cool. The show is too embedded in modern messages to take most of the dialogue and storylines seriously. A lot of the characters make really dumb decisions that they never would've done in the graphic novel.

Not gonna be everyone's series, but for me, it is a masterclass of bending imagination, blending style with substance perfectly, ambitiously creating a world, telling a non-linear story from many perspectives, spiced up with loads of creativity and a first-class music & editing taste. Watchmen will remain as Lindelof's unique opus for the ages, which, while being a fabulous adaptation of the even better graphic novel (written by Alan Moore, illustrated by Dave Gibbons) and an Orwellian sci-fi mystery, succeeds as one of the top-notch cinematic performances from the 2010s. 85%

I thought it was ok. As I understand for those who are comic fans of original Watchmen they hated it as this twisted the story, for me as someone watching who never have read those comics, only seen movie, I thought it was ok, nothing impressive.

Stay away. I see why it was cancelled after a season. How can you take something as beautiful and perfectly crafted as the Watchmen story line and turn it into such woke tripe.

If your a fan of the comic or the movie, you will probably not enjoy this as much as you would expect. And if your not a fan of them you will probably just be confused about the back story. The plot of this film is interesting enough, but seems to be crammed into the watchmen universe to appeal to a larger audience. The quality of the acting and filming is also quite high.

This is amazing, it is a worthy continuation of the end of the comic. Tremendous performances and the ending goes without saying, I like that it ends in one season.

Intelligent, creative and politically conscious. Art direction and overall curation of content are top notch. Good performances. Very relevant to current day politics. It will make reactionaries uncomfortable. 10/10.

I can't In good conscious give this anything other than a negative score. It got a few pints for the cinematography which was good. But this is nothing like the movie, or comics. Does not have the same charecters, themes, not in the same time..... This just isn't Watchmen.

The absolute best superhero content available so far. Even for non superhero fans, this is just an almost perfect show all around. I have recommended this show to all my friends, and even older family members, and everyone loves it.

Exceptional in every way; thematically rich, aesthetically breathtaking, and emotionally devastating Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, Watchmen (1986) is well-known for its deconstruction of the superhero genre, dismantling and interrogating virtually every generic trope so as to question the very purpose of such stories. At the same time, its depiction of Cold War paranoia and condemnation of right-wing idolatry are front and centre without ever seeming forced. Created by Damon Lindelof (co-creator of Lost and The Leftovers), the most significant thing about this adaptation is that it isn't an adaptation; it's an original story set 33 years after the events of the comic. And is it any good? It's not as good as The Leftovers (what is?), but it is an exceptional piece of work. The acting is immense, the writing is challenging, the aesthetic is stunning. All in all, Watchmen is that rarest of beasts – a show which lives up to the hype. Familiarity with the plot of the original isn't a requirement so as to appreciate the sequel, as you're given all the world-building back-info you need, but it can certainly help you get the most out of Lindelof's intricate narrative and thematic tapestry, especially in the earlier episodes. The world of Watchmen is a slightly different version of our world, in which the 1930s saw the rise of "costumed adventurers"; ordinary people who took to the streets to fight crime. The show is set in Tulsa, OK in 2018. White supremacist groups have been on the rise, and police are now allowed to wear masks and remain anonymous. In essence, the story follows the fallout from a murder, which is soon discovered to be much more complex than originally thought. Lindelof has stated that he wanted to tackle whatever socio-political issue that was to 2019 as the Cold War was to 1985, and to him, it "felt like it was undeniably race and policing". Politically then, the show does much the same thing as the comic did – it deploys a real-world socio-political problem in a not quite 1:1 fictional milieu. In Reagan's America, it was apocalyptic Cold War paranoia, whereas in Trump's Divided States, it's the rise of right-wing extremism. The theme of white and black comes up time and again throughout the series. For example, in "An Almost Religious Awe", a member of the KKK offshoot, Seventh Kavalry, asserts that "white men in masks are heroes. Black men in masks are scary," whilst in "See How They Fly", another member of the group proclaims, "it is extremely difficult to be a white man in America right now". In the same episode, speaking of the President, who has introduced a system of reparations, it's stated, "first he took our guns. And then he made us say sorry. Over and over again. Sorry. Sorry for the alleged sins of those who died decades before we were born. Sorry for the colour of our skin." Another major theme is how racial tensions are manifested in law enforcement. As the show begins, we're watching Trust in the Law, a 1921 Oscar Micheaux film about Deputy Bass Reeves, aka The Black Marshal (Bass Reeves was a real marshal and Micheaux was a real director, although Trust in the Law is not a real film). Here, the bad guy wears white (and is white) and the good guy wears black (and is black), thus inverting assumptions. The first scene set in 2018 does something similar as a menacing black cop pulls over a nervous white driver. These two scenes form a beautiful bit of visual story-telling, establishing the centrality of racial tensions, conveying that such things are often more complex than they appear. The show's aesthetic, especially, the cinematography and editing, is also worthy of praise. "This Extraordinary Being", for example, is shot primarily in black and white, and takes place in the 30s and 40s, with the cinematography employing the odd bit of colour here and there within the black and white photography to focus our attention on particular objects. As for "A God Walks Into Abar", if you're interested in learning about editing, watch this episode. Cut by Henk Van Eeghan, it essentially tries to give a visual representation of how Doctor Manhattan experiences time – with every moment in his existence happening all at once, so he can 'remember' things that haven't happened yet. It's a spellbinding exercise in stylistic control, with flawless time jumps that fold organically into one another to form a single cohesive template. Watchmen is an exceptionally good show. There will be fans of the comic who'll dislike it on principle. There will also be those who accuse it of pandering to a liberal PC agenda, and there'll be those who simply don't like the idea of a Watchman TV show with a black woman at its centre. Make no mistake, however, this show has been put together by people who know, appreciate, love, and understand the comic. Thematically complex, aesthetically breathtaking, brilliantly acted, Watchmen is an exceptional piece of television.

Lots of cry baby comic nerds in their parents basements complaining I see... objectively, it’s a very well written and produced show. But if you’re a hardcore comic fan who hates adaptations with any remote deviation from source material, go and rewatch the arguably more faithful, but boring af Watchmen movie

My those red comments are enlightening. Here we have a piece of art that pushes you to think critically about American history, American culture and a terrifying alternative future that isn't that far future at all. Red (ironic?) reviews will shout about "woke" this and "force fed" that without taking a single second to examine why they react so strongly to this story. This show is smart, bold and almost dizzyingly ambitious. I often ended an episode in a weird psychedelic like state. The opening scene asks you to question what you really know about American history, I know I was quickly googling "Tulsa 1921" before the credits even finished. History is full of horror and you can't brush those trauma's under the rug. From a film making stand point the directors make wonderful use of the visual language of a multitude of genres from super hero movies to old westerns, silent films, horror movies and so much more. The acting is incredible top to bottom and the music and score is even better than that. This show is a true triumph. It miraculously creates it's own footwork in this world and adds wonderful modern context to the book. A masterpiece.

An absolutely great show, beware though it is NOT a good adaptation. The makers translated the original into a sort-of sequel, sort-of remake, indeed focused very much on subject of race, which wasn't quite the case with original Watchmen. That made a lot of people very angry, and scrolling down might give you a clue as to what kind of people those are. That's just one more reason to watch it for yourself.

Really enjoyed the WM TV series. I you expect to see more of WM from the brilliant Zack Snyder movie, you could be dissapointed, because most of the timey, this feels more like a new franchise, than being part of the WM franchise. That said the story is funny, exiting and lots of different twists and turns to make it very watchable. Effects are ok, but Manhatten looks like a painted man. Regina King is awesome.

A middling sermon or a mediation about the state of the world today? Watchmen lacks the nuance to do either well. The stark departure in both tone and quality from the original source material should really come as to no surprise to fans that should by now be used to Hollywood ravaging their favorite intellectual properties in pursuit of cash. Unfortunately, HBO seems to have shot themselves in the foot on this one. While viewing the season, I couldn't escape a simple question: "Who is this show for?" Conservative viewers looking to have their views challenged will simply eye-roll the over-the-top nature of the show's premise. Minority viewers are sure to laugh out loud at the series antagonists almost cartoonish version of racism. Even ultra progressive viewers looking for confirmation bias are likely to walk away with an empty experience as the world the producers built feels so drastically alien to reality that it simply cannot be fathomable by an intelligent person. Professional critics seem to be fawning over the idea behind the show while paying nothing beyond lip service to the actual execution of said idea. The production values are nice, the show feels technically slick and well-produced despite horrendous acting and particularly flat line delivery from series lead Regina King.

What a journey! Ominous and atmospheric. Acting, soundtrack, **** nailed it for me.

I'm only 4 episodes in and boy is this show interesting! If you liked the original comic, without being one of those that think that the own the story because they liked it before it was popular, and also if you are not intimidated or biased by stories that deal with issues of race, civil rights and such matters, I totally recommend this show to you. Of course you have to know the original Comic to enjoy it to the fullest (it's easy, I binge read it in 2 days before watching it). But the characters are so interesting, the stories so intricate, and the performances so captivating that if you aren't hooked by minute 7 of episode 4, I'll give you your money back!!

Have seen Episodes 1-4 so far. Wow. Fantastic use of the source material to create something new / original* If you disliked the slavish re-enactment-ism of the Watchmen movie, check this out. Far exceeds the film version in every way.

First off, nearly all the positive reviews are from angry,purple haired,mentally ill starbucks marxists who have nothing better to do than praise any piece of media that conforms their cultural marxist **** you're not a pathetic,mentally ill beta heterophobe living in denial of history, you can safely ignore 95% of the positive reviews. So, for the rest of us sane people with good taste who doesn't blindly support literal crap shoved into our mouth, this show is an absolute trash, and easily one of the worst shows of 2019. I don't think I need to say much beyond that. The lazy writing, weak storytelling, bad pacing,uninspired acting... Everything is simply horrible and often so bad i'm wondering how can a company greenlit this. The show was so bad that it's not a surprise that the only people liking it are mentally ill raging lunatics.

Superb at the very least! They created a great story from some of the original characters while updating it to real issues that still persist nowadays. If you read the negative comments mostly are from butt-hurt racists. The show is beautifully crafted and the symbolism in some shots is really nice to appreciate and look for.

It was an excellent display of cinematography and storytelling with many layers to peal back that will definitely reward those wanting to watch over and over. I am hoping that they do a second season but it can hold its own as a single season story. I loved that they embellished the source material to bring forth a more relevant storyline that speaks to current issues in America. It is all too often that movies and shows on super heroes ignore the realities of why we may need those heroes in the world. This story hits close to home with it being based in Tulsa, OK and around the surviving lineage of Tulsa natives from Black Wall Street (real life). Dont let these racist clowns on here shy you away from the story here bc it is captivating in nearly every moment. You never quite have an idea of everything that is going on until it is too late.
