The show never forgets it’s a twisty, high-stakes thriller, and neither will viewers.

Hwang puts aside writing a cluster of dramatic types to surround Lee and Wi to build memorable portraits. .... This season allows us to get to know more of them beyond a few quirks or twirls of the figurative mustache, although there’s a share of that. But more are developed amply enough to give their performers something to sink their teeth into.

Squid Game. Season 2. Welcome back to gaming! The new season takes us back to the world of brutal survival games, where the contestants face even tougher challenges and moral dilemmas. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk maintains the tension and atmosphere by adding new characters that bring fresh ideas and unexpected twists. The cast, including the return of Lee Byung-hun and Lee Jung-jae, delivers outstanding performances, making viewers empathize with each contestant. Season 2 not only deepens the themes of greed and human nature, but also raises important social issues, making it not only entertaining but also profound. "Squid Game" remains relevant and provocative, leaving viewers waiting for more twists and turns.

So much potential, absolutely squandered. Every aspect of this season could have been made interesting with just a bit more effort, but literally none of it is. The premise, main plot, subplot, old characters, new characters, pacing, literally everything about this season written extremely poorly. It's just bad. It was bad from start to finish. The 1st season was phenomenal, but season 2 was a complete waste of time.

We always know what’s coming next—kind of. Squid Game 2, then, manages to effectively provide both familiar pleasures and a whole bunch of devious new twists.

Yes, Squid Game Season 2 will undoubtedly spawn an obnoxious number of think pieces about various modern parallels, but it really doesn’t have anything to say it hasn’t already said in Season 1.

Ultimately, Squid Game season 2 ends up feeling like it's trying to do one thing, and one thing only: get you excited for "Squid Game" season 3. And I guess on that front, it's successful — I want to see how this story ends. But I can't shake the feeling that too much of season 2 feels like it's spinning its wheels. Sure, it's entertaining and highly-watchable — don't be surprised if you binge through the entire thing in a day or two. But whereas season 1 felt like earth-shaking entertainment that came out of seemingly nowhere, season 2 is both too familiar and too inconclusive for its own good.

It's a huge shame, and it's unclear what went wrong and who's to blame. Did Hwang really want to continue the story, or did the success of Season 1 force the show to last longer than it should have? Will it all make more sense when Season 3, due in 2025, is released? Or will we find ourselves as trapped in a doomed "Game" as Gi-hun is?

Somewhere around the umpteenth stabbing and machine-gun execution, I had to wonder if this was supposed to be fun, and at what point its social critique just becomes fatalism.

They're back with the same high quality acting, character development, pacing and tension that made the first season so great. You want more Squid Game? They got more Squid Game.

Squid Game Season 2 continues the story with bigger ambitions, higher stakes, and more chaos, but ends up feeling like a setup rather than a complete season. While it introduces a wider cast, new twists, and attempts to dig deeper into the system behind the games, it struggles emotionally due to character overload and decisions that make the protagonist feel less grounded than before. There are still moments of strong tension, solid performances, and striking visuals, but the season leans more toward dramatics than realism, losing some of the subtlety that made the first season hit harder. The social commentary is still there, but much of the impact is diluted by rushed pacing and the fact that this season doesn’t fully stand on its own. Without its follow-up, Season 3, this chapter feels more like a transition than a satisfying continuation.

This was a disaster. The worst thing I’ve seen in the last six months. Ruining such a highly anticipated continuation could only happen due to the overwhelming popularity of the first season. Now Squid Game feels like a promotional project for various performers and actors. Most of the screen time is taken up by character dialogues with occasional interruptions for the games. They introduced a rebellion-against-the-system theme, but after all the painfully bad shootout scenes — which look like they were made with a couple thousand dollars — our Gi-hun is still moping around, disappointed by the lack of justice. And of course, there’s an excessive amount of blood, completely out of place, which only further proves how unserious the project has become.

A bit of a pointless season. Nowhere near as good as the first one and a lot of agenda nonsense pushed through further lowering the quality of the writing.
