I love this show so, so, so much <3 I really wish there was a third season, but I'm also very grateful that OFMD exists at all.

Our Flag Means Death is a comedy series based (very loosely) on the life of Stede Bonnet, who in 1717 abandoned his life of wealth and luxury to become a pirate. As one might expect with Taiki Waititi and Rhys Darby involved, this is very much a goofball comedy. It never quite reaches the heights of either’s best projects (Flight of the Conchords and What we Do in the Shadows for example) but it grew on me as the series progressed and revealed itself to have a decent amount of heart amongst the jokes.

It was a pretty funny show and I thought it was witty with its writing and great acting. However, if Gay characters trigger you then this is not a show for you.

This series is incredible. The characters are well-formed, believable and complex not to mention that each and every one of them is incredibly lovable. The humor is nuanced and layered while also being silly and fun. I loved every single moment.

This series means a lot to me. It is the first time in years that I feel represented, that a series makes me visible and at the same time is not afraid to laugh at itself. It has created an incredible community. I wish for a third season from the bottom of my heart. #SaveOFMD

I really like this show. It ended up being a lot different than I imagined but it really does a great job of making you feel like you are part of the crew and at sea with them. The relationships between characters feels very genuine and it doesn’t feel shoved in your face. A lot shows with homosexuality can feel forced but this just feels so natural. It could be a little on the funnier side but it has its moments. I wouldn’t say it is meant to be a comedy but it’s light hearted.

This is one of the best series currently airing and I'll be damned if more people don' start getting it. It is fun, amazing, casual, simple, smart, with an amazing cast, great lines. Dunno what else to say. Please, just watch it.

Wobbly slash fiction with borrowed elements from "What We Do In the Shadows" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."

I was very disappointed. I heard this movie was ALL about ghay stuff, sadly it was not ghay enough. No where near a ghay pride parade levels ghayness. Lame. Derivative. Banal.

Just not funny. None of the jokes landed. Not sure what's more to blame: the writing, the editing, the directing, or the acting. But pretty sure if the writing was good, there'd at least be a chuckle in there somewhere.

Such a funny, heart-warming, comforting show, which is easy to just keep rewatching over and over again. I can't recommend Our Flag Means Death enough and I genuinely believe that its existence has made the world a better place.

Yes this show is flawed. The pacing of the first three episodes is a bit slow and almost lost me, but when Waititi's Blackbeard is introduced, the show turns into the most heartfelt and beautifully told **** romance that I have ever seen.

Fantastic show! I quickly fell in love with the motley crew aboard the “Revenge.” The writing is superb, as is the delicate balance of humor, action, and romance. If you enjoyed Good Omens and/or What We Do in the Shadows, this show is for you.

This is my favorite show. I cannot stop thinking about it. It's funny, heartwarming and has an amazing cast of characters. And it's about gay pirates. There's no reason you shouldn't watch this show.

This show brings me so much happiness and the representation is amazing. It’s hard to turn on the news without seeing anti-LBGTQ laws and rhetoric, so this show is an escape from a world that doesn’t want **** people to be seen or heard. It means a lot to me and so many other people.

This series was a complete surprise to me. I thought it would be a silly thing that made me chuckle a few times. Instead, I was completely drawn in by the evolution of the characters. Very excited for a second season

I feel like I've been waiting for this show since 2012. My gf and I screamed out loud when we realised it actually wasn't **** this time, and after watching the finale I couldn't sleep because Waititi's performance was distressing in the best way. Either way, since I've already watched it twice in a week it's likely that the wait for season 2 will feel just as long. Thank god for fix-it fics.

Incredible show, I watched it all in one sitting and then watched it all over again the next day. So very funny and very heartwarming, they are pirates and they are a family.

So refreshing. Funny and lighthearted yet also so emotionally intelligent and visceral at the same time.

Funny and romantic, highly enjoyable. No spoilers but let's just say the writers aren't cowards. Excellent show! Lots of fun, and who doesn't enjoy a good pirate tale?

An amazing show! I love everything about this show, and I can’t wait for more. The emotional last few episodes of season 1 caught me so off guard, in the best way possible. Can’t wait for the second season!! ️

The show is witty, funny, heartfelt story **** of people trying to figure out what makes them happy. It just happens to be set in 1717 and that they are pirates.

I've always loved Taika Waititi's sense of humore and this show only reinforces that. He and Rhys Darby are outstanding leads but the supporting ensemble is also excellent. I adore this show with everything in my heart.

This show is fantastic. I just finished watching the first season with my wife and we will probably rewatch it again from the start. The critic reviews don't do it justice. This is the type of show (like Schitt's Creek) where if it gets a second season, it will get popular and we will get six great seasons - but could easily not make it to the second. That would be a real shame. Like other viewers have said the first few episodes are slow, but the second half of the season is hilarious and wonderful.

I love this show so much I've created accounts on two different rating websites to review it. It's everything I've ever wanted in a show. Hilarity. **** identities existing before 1980. Incredibly vibrant and enjoyable characters. Taika Waititi. I just binged the show and I can't get enough! I've started today but it has to already be one of my all time favorites.

It does take a little while to get going, but by episode 4/5 the uniqueness of the show truly shines through! The series feels like a trip at times but is actually more 'real' than I had anticipated, and I mean that in a good way. The characters are great, Rhys Darby gets to show his dramatic chops, Buttons is hilarious and the pirate crew is fun (really like the cook/surgeon Roach too). The production value is high, the comedy unique and each episode runs at a good 30mins. If you want to know what mid-life-crisis pirating could have really been like and join the shenanigans of an amateur pirate crew, this show is for you!

Since playing the inept manager on Flight of the Conchords, I've never found Rhys Darby especially amusing. This time he stars in the series loosely based on the adventures **** landowner who leaves his family and wealth to become a pirate in the 1700s. Darby bumbles about continuously, ranting with pomposity but never being funny. The supporting cast is filled with potentially comic types, but none of them goes far enough. Taika Waititi is co-creator (and plays Blackbeard), but his skills with left-field humor can't rescue this. Even Leslie Jones, who can be hilarious with a look, is just dull. The pace never lags and everyone is doing their best to amuse, but the lack of witty writing simply sinks the series. (Review based on the first 3 episodes. The final 3 released 3/10.)

HBO’s Our Flag Means Death is a hilarious look at pirate life on the high seas. A light-hearted comedy that at times offers thoughtful moments. The ensemble grouped into one scene have great comedic moments that will make you laugh. These first episodes made me think of Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) and the Police Squad gang. The Naked Gun crew also pulled off multiple funny moments within one scene. There are only three episodes available on HBO, but it should be enough to get you laughing. - Damian @TalkTeaV
