Only Murders in the Building

This show remains an extremely rare example of a comedy-drama that does both equally, and incredibly, well.

Few shows bring a smile to one’s face as consistently as Only Murders in the Building, and Steve Martin and John Hoffman’s half-hour murder-mystery comedy continues to succeed in that regard with its third season.

While there are still laughs – particularly involving Sazz Pataki’s stunt pals, Eva Longoria embracing life as a would-be super sleuth, and a getting-to-know-you montage involving Galafianakis and Oliver that’s borderline romantic – season four has a lot more heart, and it works.

[The second season] isn’t as playfully meta as its predecessor. Yet in every other way, it’s as mysterious and witty as before. A fast-paced whodunit that captures the spirit of New York City and its colorful denizens and diverse communities, it’s a pure delight, led by a Short performance that reconfirms his standing as the funniest person alive.

As a writer, Martin has always exhibited eclectic tastes, and "Only Murders" reflects a playful extension of those sensibilities.

A pleasant, fizzy trifle with dashes of semi-compatible substance.

There are some other enjoyable moments in a slightly enervating whole where, you suspect, our three lead actors are having a lot more fun than the audience. .... Familiarity here breeds not contempt but a sense of “so what?”.

One of the best shows that I’ve ever seen in the last 5 years! So funny and entertaining, Selena’s acting is in another level, her, Martin Short and Steve Martin have amazing chemistry!

I watched cuz i like steve martin and mart short. It is an amusing story with some very funny moments (i loved the passive aggresdive exchange btwn the the m. Short character and the president of the apartment abot his late fees). BUT i personally do not like the very slow pacing. Basically, they are takingvthe time to give bak story for character development. This will not appeal to somebody that wants to get into the mystery clues right away. I wstched 3 episodes and probably will NOT continue. I admit tho, once we kno the characters there might be a very big enhanced payoff. But not gonna invest that much time. However, it might appeal to ppl that like the leisurely detective pace and want to really digest the dialogue.

an ok comedy. i was never fully convinced by the cast and to be honest, the best moments were not even thanks to the main characters.

"Only Murders in the Building" (S01, Aug 2021, 10-eps, 30+ mins, Hulu) This review is for its first season. I waited several years to watch this because (a) the initial set of reviews weren't good, and (2) I wanted to see if it endured for several seasons. So given that it's completed 4 seasons, and will get a 5th, I was like, well, it must be pretty good to endure, right? So the first ep was pretty good, but then the second AND third eps were significantly poorer and an acting and/or directing pattern was establishing itself. Martin Short was overacting and over-expressing. Steve Martin (age 76 at the time) just came across as old and tired. But worst, and this is a continuing critique to this day, is the acting ability of Selena Gomez. Her problem is the exact opposite of my observation for Martin Short; she underacts, undervoices, and in general underwhelms. Her character is just unappealing in all dimensions. But you know what all three of them are EPs of the show so no one can remove or replace them! So if, like me, you can't get past even a few episodes, you cannot hope for a new cast at some point, you have only one option, stop watching the show and move on, which is exactly what I'm doing.

I love selena gomez but her acting post wizards of Waverly place has been consistently horrible, rigid and bland. She fails to portray a character but instead just reads her lines. The mystery is awfully predictable and their dynamic doesn't intrest me in anyway.
