Smale and fellow novelist Jessica Ruston’s screen version has retained the joyful essence of the books and – with a deeply admiring nod to the casting directors here – have in Emily Carey a Harriet who delivers everything they need.

Geek Girl is a well-written and well-acted look at what happens when someone who doesn’t usually embrace surprises in life does so out of the simple desire to be seen.

It’s a solid showcase for its 21-year-old star. Geek Girl is a likably wholesome, generally low-stakes YA fairy tale — references to Cinderella abound.

The format is a little run-of-the-mill, even by teen romcom standards. .... But overall, Geek Girl is a feel-good, cosy watch that will be happily approved by dedicated fans of the best-selling source material.
