Somehow, Boy Swallows Universe pulls off a pretty dark coming-of-age story without being depressing or hopeless, thanks to some deft writing and fantastic performances by the cast.

The A.V. Club
There’s a solid downbeat family dramedy nested inside Boy Swallows Universe, meditating on the compromises that come with living at the bottom rung of society. (A scene in which Lyle and an upper-middle-class housewife haggle over the price of a used Atari speaks volumes.) But the show doesn’t seem to realize that; it thinks that we also want a conspiracy thriller, an after-school special, and a Dickensian tale of childhood suffering.

The best thing I have watched probably since the last Australian series I watched on any streaming service. I am not an Ozzie, but my goodness they make exceptional television. And have amazing actors.

This series revolves around a broken family in 80s Brisbane, where dealing and using heroin play a central part. The sons are the fulcrum of the story: Felix Cameron plays a precocious, outspoken whippersnapper and Lee Tiger Halley plays his brother, who's sometimes mute. Fortunately, both of the young actors are marvelous in capturing the complex emotions that their situations find them in, while displaying their immense brotherly love. The series starts with an upbeat, quirky energy and some flights of fantasy. There a clever directorial bits and snappy situations. As the plot progresses, it becomes less about eccentric and more about drama, which is also handled well. While the subject is dark and many of their encounters unpleasant, it's ultimately a sweet story of family love with some eccentric personalities and compelling storytelling.

Slant Magazine
As a piece of social commentary on working-class life in suburban Australia, Boy Swallows Universe is hair-raising and charming in equal measure. As a crime drama, it feels gratuitously melodramatic. The denouement in particular, which liberally employs exaggerated plot devices and stock villains, eschews the light touch of the show’s promising early episodes.

Uneven pacing can oftentimes feel as though the series is slow without meaning to be, still providing engaging dialogue but failing to completely captivate. The drama itself is melodramatic and packed full of moments of inspiration designed to tickle the eyes with tears, but the more cynical viewer will simply enjoy them, not be bowled over.

Show tricks people into watching it because of Mr Fimmel, but he's barely in it. Then the show is just TRAUMA TRAUMA TRAUMA FEEL BAD FOR THIS KID TRAUMA TRAUMA. Mostly just dreck that tries to fool people into liking it because it blatantly emotionally manipulated them. Also, it gets worse with every episode and the finale has every character acting in ridiculous ways.

You would be hard pressed to summarise, in one sentence, what the story of this tv show is about. In fact, the more you think about the collection of cartoons that the tv show is made of, the more you realise that ultimately, it's about absolutely nothing.
