Since each year is stand-alone it’s easy enough to enjoy Season 3 on its own. While the series boasts a good cast, it’s Welliver’s show. He brings a solid presence to the character of Bosch.

The second season and now the third aren’t exact translations of the books--nor should they be, since what works in one medium doesn’t automatically in another--but they feel to me both like the Harry Bosch from the page and like a very solid TV cop drama.

The show hasn’t lost its footing or gone too far into new territory. And with no new seasons of Luther or True Detective, and no new Sherlock or Foyle’s War or The Wire, it might just be the best ongoing series about homicide detectives that you can watch today.

The show surprised me again, it just got better. Now don’t get me wrong, if you aren’t interested in a trope-y cop noire series, then you still don’t want to watch this. My complaints in the past though have been addressed in a few ways. It isn’t just about Bosch anymore. He is still the main star, he will always be the main star, however we get to learn more about his partner, about the other cops and about Irving. The plot isn’t just about his mother. Oh, it is about his mother, but there are so many other plots, relationships, and encounters that you don’t feel quite so overwhelmed by it. To be fair though, I really dislike his ex-wife’s plot involving working for the FBI. I could do without her completely, and definitely without it. The show is very serialized, meaning the episodes bleed into each other. I know what happened in the season, but I would be hard pressed to point at the specific episode it happened in. The show is good at the long form of writing, but I am spoiled with most of my shows and sometimes wish there would be that “oh **** episode. Pros: The writing is getting better. Cons: Repeat of season 2: Dear god can we stop with the murdered mother storyline? I hear they are writing season 4. I am definitely in on it.

A solid 3rd season that doesn't break any new ground. This series could of been tighter and more focused though.

Really clunky acting and dialogue in Season 3. The daughter might be one of the worst actresses on tv. Amazon needs to up the game and hire a proper show runner and directors.

First two seasons were excellent. This season is working on being mysterious and it isn't working. Very disappointing. This could have been the best season yet. Acting is still good, but it appears someone else is producing this year.
