Even the crazy twists of this story that don’t quite work impressed me with their ambition in a film that gets incredibly dark and narratively insane.

There are moments of dread and tension, and as the narrative wears on it goes to some commendably weird places. But by then it's too little too late, and the movie ends with us wishing that the characters really had done something — anything, really.

The first part is very intriguing, but it all becomes very repetitive very early. Acting is not that bad, but the characters don't have a very satisfying trajectory; it's quite obvious what will happen to them from very early. And the last act is just bonkers; the director tries to channel 'Suspiria,' but it feels very cheap. There's also a supernatural element that will make your eyes roll. Wished the plot could've followed what was laid out at the beginning.

Now from IFC Films, another long and uninspired film that could easily have been a short one. The whole concept is based on suggestion, and how much you're willing to accept how the story works. Which becomes quite complicated after about 25 minutes, for two simple reasons. The first one is that almost the entire film takes place in the same location, and from the beginning it's made very clear that the people there have problems, so the confinement will deteriorate the situation. That's immediately inferred. Second, something evil seems to be looming over them, from the inside and from the outside, and one of the characters is to blame for it.
As events unfold around that resource, there's only one possible outcome in a horror film: Annihilation. An explanation is given with flashbacks of why those things are happening, but the truth is that it's just very frivolous, and nothing that this film does justifies the whole mess.
And the ending is just a **** joke. A total wasted effort.

Despite some nifty freak-outs, the movie’s buildup can lack a certain snap.

There’s something present here, something perhaps even brilliant, but whatever that may be; it’s just not enough.

We Need to Do Something simply doesn’t have the character-centered backbone to create an engaging 96-minute long story. It’s painfully obvious that atmosphere and style were the priority even though the premise made it so that the characters took the spotlight.

The cast is wasted in such lame roles, and the horror story’s uncertain tone falls far short of intriguing. So, despite one supremely frightening moment, this movie is not scary. It just stinks.

Unpredictability being its lone strength, We Need To Do Something is an uneven survival horror that gets caught up in its own pretentious trappings.

At first it’s intriguing, and has some seriously weird scenes dispersed among a broader film full of fluff that no one really gives fly F about. Characters are based on tired dysfunctional family & social tropes and possess the interpersonal depth of a sheet of paper. 1/4 of the way through it cuts to a flashback concerning the teen girls self harm “boohoo woe is me” wiccan-lesbian relationship; get ready because it‘s a recurring theme playing into the situation the family is *presently* in. Does Sierra McCormick only play damaged girls with an alternative lifestyle? Seems like a decent actor who’s just shoehorned into this character over and over again. You’re really not missing anything if you skip this one.
