Crude, rude, nasty fun.

The essential problem with the movie isn't that it's loud, violent, and gory, but that, before Carpenter ratchets up the tension in the final 35 minutes, it's not especially interesting.

Greetings from Lithuania.
"Vampires" (1998) is a movie directed by John Carpenter, and for me this was his last good film. I enjoyed this semi-wester vampire flick back in the day, and revisited it in 2026 on 4K UHD. This film by the way looks absolutely amazing on 4K. As for the film, this is western, vampire movie that is set in present days, but western genre is written all over it. James Woods and Daniel Baldwin were good in this film. I liked the practical effects which there are quite a lot in this film, and basically no use of CGI. Make up was really good. Music is excellent.Overall, "Vampires" for me is a good genre flick. It is well paced, well acted, very well crafted and it knows exactly what it is and nothing more. Good film.

Vampires is a classic 90s film by Carpenter. But unlike most of Carpenter's later films, Vampires is pleasant and interesting to watch. Vampires has everything we all love this director for. A good cast, a classic plot that is not original and typical action scenes of level B action movies. The story itself in Vampires looks like a caricature of other vampire movies. Here, literally the first 10 minutes of the film set the tone of what is happening in the film. I'm sure that if Vampires the viewer sits down to see an interesting story about vampires, instead of waiting for Carpenter's classic film, he may be deeply disappointed. Vampires can be safely recommended to all Carpenter fans.

It's interesting, though, to think of double-billing Woods' Crow with Pacino's Prince of Darkness from Devil's Advocate: Scenery-chewing never looked so good.

The lead actors on both sides of the vampire divide are all strong personalities.

For all the exploding gore, graphic eviscerations and combustible corpses, it’s not shocking, not sexy and not scary.

Ridiculous without being awful enough to be hilarious.

It's just as well that John Carpenter makes horror movies, because here's a horrifying thought picture James Woods as an action hero. [30 October 1998, p. 44]

An enjoyable good vampire film with mostly good effects and awesome action. The cast is great and James Wood really is cool on this movie.
This might be a carpenter film that should also get more recogniton like several of his other films.

Rednecks vs. vampires. The idea had to say something in its favor but it was not 100%. Why? The abuse of vulgar humor, the scary scenes that are only half fulfilling, and a villain who lacked a more dynamic personality. Better luck next time?

A very good enjoyable John Carpenter film, From his 90s output this is not the worst he has made a very fun Action horror film I would say that all this cinematography is as good as you can expect from him so it is not bad to look at, I would recommend it strongly

When originally seeing this movie I hated it. Revisiting it so many years later I have to say it's even worse than I remember. Most of it's mainly due to an unlikable performance from James Woods (The Getaway) and a terribly written character. Poor Sheryl Lee (Twin Peaks Fire walk with me) gets thrown around, punched, slapped and stripped. She doesn't even have a character and the blatant misogyny made me feel very uncomfortable. Than there's The other Baldwin brother Daniel who has some overly mediocre moments but the character is just so badly written. Only Thomas Ian Griffith as the head vamp and Tim Guinee as Father Adam offer any real likability, charisma or depth. And as for the film itself. It's pretty much a disaster. It tries to be a sort of biker vampire flick. Its mean spirited but lacks any real engagement and because of that its boring and you could just care less. A definite dark spot in Carpenter's accomplished career. Budget: $20m
Box Office: $20m 1/5

Terrible acting. Terrible Dialogue. Terrible story. Terrible effects/pyrotechnics. Terrible makeup. Terrible characters. This movie is a Turd-Sandwich. Only thing I enjoyed is how the hunters dispose of the **** hooking them up to a truck and dragging them outside into the sunlight. I thought that was a clever idea and nice addition to the Vampire genre. The rest of the movie ****. Pun intended.
