Thelma the Unicorn

If the rest of the film does err towards the slightly generic, Howard gives Thelma the Unicorn a great lead that you’ll have no trouble rooting for.

Thelma the Unicorn avoids being rendered completely unoriginal by its overly familiar premise thanks to consistent splashes of acid humor and a plethora of wacky supporting characters.

While there are some quality jokes about how hard it is to maintain authenticity, it’s all frustratingly—if unsurprisingly—surface-level. Thankfully, the film is often funny, and it's best when leaning into the absurdity that fuels Hess and Wang’s other work.

For most of its running time, it’s a small-scale delight that balances quirky humor and heartfelt emotion to excellent effect.

In a sea of family content that’s more often than not annoying, Thelma the Unicorn surfs, for the most part, above the crowd.

Somewhere, buried under all that paint and glitter, there’s a lesson to take away from Thelma The Unicorn, but it’s nothing new.

Essa animação da Netflix tem comentários bem ácidos sobre a indústria cultural, especialmente considerando o mundo de aparências em que vivemos e de como interiorizamos essas expectativas assim como essa disputa acirrada entre popstars e de como tal indústria se alimenta de conflitos e de moda, dando pouco espaço para a arte em si. É uma pena que o final seja sentido de longe, com uma lição de moral de "ser você mesmo" já repetida à exaustão, bem como unidimensionalizando os vilões e tratando o público que acompanha a carreira da Thelma como marionete: ora são fanáticos e ora se comovem, a bel prazer do roteiro. Ainda assim muito divertido de assistir, e está visualmente bem colorido, irá agradar o público mais infantil, com uma edição ágil e personagens extremamente simpáticos. Bom filme.

My kids loved it so what do I know!?7/10

I read the book, and adding the addition to being a singing unicorn!?!?! all I can say is: B-B-Bubba bobba hob-hobba-hobba wah-wah.
