The War with Grandpa

Whenever and wherever kids do see it, they're apt to enjoy it, while the theme reminds the adults in their lives that the differences and that come between families -- from politics to something as frivolous as a kid's bedroom -- finally aren't as significant as the deeper bonds that they share.

The amiably bland family comedy The War With Grandpa genuinely surprises with how un-special it is. It’s the kind of film that seems to vanish from the mind even as you’re watching it.

De Niro is game throughout, and sometimes amusing in that way he can be. But Walken is the funniest performer here.

It’s a very minor victory to report that rather than being bad, it’s merely bland, an adequate milquetoast time-waster for a very young and very undiscerning audience.

The War With Grandpa is a sluggish hodgepodge of slapstick humor that barely holds together its illogically motivated plot.

The “pranks” just aren’t funny. The whole premise isn’t funny.

When the books are written, The War With Grandpa — the first family film to hit theaters since the pandemic — will have a special place in De Niro’s vast and varied cinematic legacy as the absolute worst movie he ever made.

The whole grandson declaring war on grandpa has some bad and extreme unrealistic vibe hanging over the movie. Most "pranks" weren't funny, but some were. The acting of Robert de Niro is never a dissappointment, not even when the movie is mediocre at best. A 7 for this is on the highest end possible. Mainly because De Niro saved anything left of the movie and the fact that some of these pranks were good.

Dirty Grandpa, but cute. For the most part this family-friendly slapstick comedy meanders around without much of a real plot as grandfather and son go back and forth in a "war" of over-the-top pranks while swapping some touching moments with the rest of the house along the way. Outside of a rather tasteless gag at a funeral that involves the body of the deceased getting manhandled, it's about as inoffensive as you can get. Naturally, the older you are the less amusing all of this will be, but it's still worth putting on for the kids. Not only will it likely keep them in a near-constant fit of laughter, but also comes with a nice anti-war message on top of preaching the values of getting along with your elders. Yes, it's about as deep and original as an inflatable children's pool. That doesn't really matter too much though when all it's trying to be is a bit of harmless entertainment for the youngsters, which is something I can always get behind.

I liked it, but it is of course more for kids. So I assume it might be more funny for kids who watching and for grownups some jokes maybe not as funny anymore.

What happened with the idea that family movies are about normal people dealing with extraordinary things (as comedy or adventure)... this movie now paints human values as so bad, the best they can hope for is 'normal'. Even our kids thought this movie was sick. Its not how it ends, it's how it normalises a lack of humanity. Who is this movie made for? If this is a reflection on society, I want to clock out now

Its boring with really bad jokes with not interestant characters and bad acting performances.
