SummaryThe otherwise ordinary Harold Fry (Jim Broadbent) captivates a nation when he leaves behind routine and regret and sets out on a 450-mile walk of hope to reach his dying friend. His journey is a celebration of life that helps us to realize that failure and loss – just as much as success and joy – can shape us for good.

The subtext behind the pilgrimage is that an act of kindness from decades ago can stay with a person and compel them to shake off the shackles of shame. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is about the lengths that even skeptical people will go to for each other, a length that defies all logic.

Harold’s trek has its moments to savour, but Wilton seizes the day by sculpting her own mini Mike Leigh film on the side – armed with only a vacuum cleaner and a face like thunder.

As twee as its title, Harold Fry probably won’t win over anyone immediately turned off by its premise. Broadbent and Wilton are as reliable as ever, but this tear-jerker mostly feels removed from real human emotion. It might inspire you to go for a nice walk, though.
