The usual possession beats are here — creepy crawling! smoking crucifixes! shivering violins! — and given their own quirky spins. (One key revelation takes place over coffees at McDonald’s.) Yet, Daniels carves space for the intimate moments that matter to him.

The Deliverance is bolstered by the cast’s commitment to the story and their characters. Without them, the film's ending wouldn't have been remotely believable.

When I went in to watch The Deliverance, I knew that it was a movie pertinent to a real story that took place in Gary, Indiana. I knew that the topic was both a deeply disturbing one, and that the movie would not just be a delving into cinematic escapism or bliss like many other movies tend to be. Not that it deterred me, as I have a interest in true crime and situations relevant to the paranormal and always **** movie focuses on Andra Day in the lead role of Ebony Jackson; a struggling single mother who has just recently relocated for the umpteenth time. We meet Andra along with her mother, played by the legendary Glenn Close, and her children around the dinner table after they've moved into their new home in Gary, and it is this time that we begin to gather that there were some issues that Ebony was dealing with as a mother and with her children's father being deployed continually and the challenges of financial woes due to the restraints on the family due to this fact. Things seem rather normal on the surface - it seems like the functionality of the family is a bit disrupted but that they still hold close to each other and the one scene that exhibited that to me most was when Glenn's character is doing Andra's character's hair while she sees to her daughter's and the boys watch a movie that the whole family seems to know line by line. This normal scene sets that pace for the movie feeling more like a drama than what it becomes. When strange occurrences begin to happen in the house, Ebony's children become violently ill at school and they are subsequently sent to the emergency room for evaluation. Once evaluated, the medical professionals cite that nothing seems away and assures Ebony that her children seem fine otherwise. Ebony displays that she is a strong mother bear sort and she even bucks up to her mother who seems less than supportive when confronted with the test results after the children's evaluation. Once more, we get a glimpse into how Ebony feels isolated, unsupported and challenged when she and her mother exchange vulgarities due to their differences in opinion.Soon, Ebony's woes become that much more pressing when not only do the children display strange ailments, but weirder things begin to occur within the house. Due to the issues with her children, the State of Indiana has Children's Protective Services send out a caseworker and that is when things really begin to turn for the South because Ebony's children's experience is not only continual, but the state begins to question Ebony's ability to care for children and her sanity within the scope of the ongoing bizarre occurrences she claims are happening in her house. What happens after this, is nothing short of paranormal and supernatural history not unlike the stories associated with the Amityville Horror or the true story about the little boy who became the inspiration for The Exorcist (watch Possessed with Timothy Dalton, 2000) - and while I would not say that The Deliverance is as terrifying as The Exorcist I'd wager it is a bit more because names were not changed, and the identities of those who were terrorized is clear in this movie and we can easily decipher from many reports from various authorities that the incidences that occurred in The Demon House and the experience the family has a long with others who went to visit the home that there is far more to this world than we can see, and much of it we may never understand.I recommend The Deliverance to those who want to believe in more - or for those who already know it's real.

While the poor, urban setting of The Deliverance is a little bit unique for the supernatural genre, the way the suffering and dreariness within the backdrop collides with the ghastly misery of the unrelenting horror of it all is just several steps out of bounds.

Had Daniels explored all the underpinnings of a horror outing as a dramatic allegory for addiction — as the film‘s opening quote (“I need forgiveness for my sins, but I also need deliverance from the power of sin…”) suggests he might — the director could have fared better than going all the way to ghosts… or is it demons?

[Daniels] desire to wrest explicit meaning out of the mother’s experience and corral viewers toward a single conclusion unwittingly places The Deliverance in mawkish and disappointingly cartoonish territory.

The Deliverance is alternatingly dull and totally nuts. It is never scary, and only sometimes holds your attention.

This is one of those strange films where I can’t decide whether I liked it or not. There are so many unlikeable elements but the climax makes them feel worthwhile. The characters are engaging but unlikeable. The pace is slow. The build-up goes nowhere. It’s really bleak. The thing that really grabbed me and is my problem with this film is that everything happens in the final act, the perfect example of this is how well it sets up the basement mystery but it leads to nothing. I can’t help but reference The Babadook (2014) and The Exorcist (1973) and The Entity (1982) but they all have a much more consistent pace. The ending is great but for most of the film there is nothing happening or any hint of any relevant hint of what will happen unlike Exorcist which has a consistent slow build. So overall I think that I liked it but also I didn’t like it. Great acting by the way.

Not absolutely awful, but deteriorates into a pretty standard demonic possession film by its 3rd act that is littered with bad acting and dialogue.

Andra Day plays a mom who's struggling to keep the bills paid and her 3 kids in line. Turns out their new house is cursed by a demon that ends up possessing the offspring, while mom is blamed. Given that this was directed by Lee Daniels, a more grand approach is expected, but he forgot the tension part. The performances play out with extended intense dialogue and numerous personal encounters. Glenn Close, as the grandmother, seems to be enjoying the wild outfits and angry attitude. The scant effects aren't special. Demonic possession isn't a new topic and this movie brings nothing to the genre. It's just a slow slog domestic drama with nothing original or remotely thrilling. It does NOT deliver.

#TheShortHandCritic: #TheDeliverance is a throwaway horror movie that was made memorable by the unexpected performance of #GlennClose as Alberta. Close sinks her teeth into the role—surprisingly avoiding camp (something, let’s be honest, she has danced around more often than she should in her career) while clearly eyeing another #Oscar nod. Unfortunately, her role of the reborn abusive mother to #AndraDay’s character Ebony may not be written big enough to support it. Day plays a drunken mother who mirrors the behaviors she grew up dealing with. She tries her best to still make Ebony lost but likable, but it’s a challenging feat. Had the movie been simply a drama like in the first act—it would have been far more interesting. Instead it submerges into a possessed house horror flick that feels out in left field. Nothing adds up the way it should—the dynamics of the mother/daughter relationship go back and forth between believability. It’s flimsily directed by #LeeDaniels, and the stereotypical writing is even worse—it being based on an apparent true story. In different hands of those with more skilled concentration, this could have been a great movie. But it’s simply awful and—not scary. The curiosity factor of Close’s excellent performance is almost enough to recommend it for a viewing… almost. ️1/2 (1/2 Added Only For Close’s Performance/Out Of 4 Because 5 Stars Are For Restaurants & Hotels Only) #FilmReview #ShortHandCritic
