Stillwater

Audiences will come away feeling like they’ve really been somewhere, that they were moved by the people they met and expanded by the experience. You can’t ask more from a movie.

What director Tom McCarthy’s intriguing film — which is a tad overlong — deftly explores are the cultural barriers that prevent us from achieving basic goals, such as solving a murder, and connecting with people unlike ourselves. The story is a lot more nuanced than France vs. America.

Matt Damon, in the central role, confers a somber grace on a man who always thought he had none.

The quality of the acting makes it easy to overlook how increasingly leaden Stillwater becomes — but not easy enough.

Stillwater mashes up quest-for-justice, father-daughter dramatics, fortysomething romance and mid-life introspection for a refreshingly adult drama. It doesn’t coalesce completely, but Damon and Cottin keep it engaging.

For most of its length, Stillwater goes along as a meticulous examination of its central characters. And then suddenly near the end it jumps the tracks.

This is one to forget: a muddled, tonally misjudged, badly acted, uncertainly directed and frankly dubious drama, something that falls into the so-bad-it’s-bad bracket.

An excellent movie and likely very close to the truth in the Amanda Knox case. It is very instructive that the actual killer is so upset about the movie!

The story was interesting but the movie was definitely 20-25 minutes longer than it needed to be, the main plot just kind of takes a break in the middle of the movie. The ending was kind of unsatisfying as well after nearly 2.5 hours of buildup.

The female lead and her daughter were great and she carried to story. The story could of been amazing. Matt Damon was awful. His daughter was unlikeable. They should of built out the love story between her and the middle eastern lover more. You really didn’t care one way or the other is Matt or his daughter lived loved or died. They made Americans look bad and it just wasn’t realistic at all. Roughnecks make A LOT of money. Any American who makes 150-200k a year could afford 12,000 dollars for a private detective. It wasn’t realistic in the slightest. Matt Damon is carried bc his mom works at Harvard and he is part of the A lost friend circle but he ruined this movie. Another actor could of done amazing things with this material.
