While the Hollywood legends don’t disappoint, it’s their children who steal the spotlight. Being able to hold your own in—let alone carry—a movie alongside those heavyweights is no easy feat, but it’s especially impressive considering Schuyler and Jake are not household names.

Sam & Kate doesn't try to elicit big emotional responses, but that's exactly why it gets them.

As long as their are little lives worth a little intense scrutiny, there’ll be indie films like Sam & Kate, pleasant diversions that give legendary stars the indulgence of a victory lap, this time with their kids along for the ride.

Fisk and Hoffman (the younger) make a fine pair on screen with a natural chemistry; it’s nice to see her back in a romantic leading role. You just wish the two had more substantive material to work with. In fact, the Hallmark holiday version of this film would likely have been more entertaining, or at least shorter.

Sam & Kate doesn't have anything wrong with it per se, but there's also not much in it to mention anything of congruent importance. Unnecessary by far is an adjective that defines it perfectly and that's mainly because it never gives you anything you really care about. Dramatic exploration is non-existent and focuses more on letting you draw your own conclusions. Character development is basically zero, so you go through almost the entire path the story gives you with little explanation until it decides it has to end, and then nothing. It will undoubtedly lean heavily on the presence of Sissy Spacek and Dustin Hoffman to entice audiences to see it. In fact, they are the reason I saw it, but Sam & Kate is a film that misuses both of them. What it really seems is that they are there just to serve as props for their respective offspring.
