Saint Misbehavin': The Wavy Gravy Movie

Esrick spent 10 years on the film, and the result is a comprehensive portrait.

Make of it what you will: like its subject, Saint Misbehavin' is an unabashed love letter to the world that defies the cynicism of our age.

Not a particularly deep portrait of its iconoclastic subject, this loving documentary should be of interest to aging baby boomers with long memories.

It's impossible to watch this movie without feeling that you're in the presence of a good and decent man.

Perhaps the fly-on-the-wall approach of Esrick's mentor (and this film's executive producer) D.A. Pennebaker would have been more revealing. Instead, we get just a mystery man in white.

Director Michelle Esrick, who followed Wavy around for 10 years, journeys from Manhattan to Woodstock to Nepal to the hills of California to tell Wavy's story. The journey is entertaining, whether you witnessed the 1960s firsthand or heard about it from your grandparents.

This Age-of-Aquarius relic's dedication to utopian ideals is great; this superficial portrait, however, is merely grating.
