Prevenge is a brilliantly conceived meditation on prepartum anxiety and extreme grief.

A pitch-black, blood-soaked comedy and phenomenal first feature by Alice Lowe, who also stars as Ruth, the pregnant heroine.

Covering depression, grief and pregnancy as body-horror, the end result is a palpably unusual mix of comedy, pathos and gruesome violence

Uneven though it is, and downright shaggy at times, Prevenge is valuable in that it plots so unexpected an expectant-mother story — one in which pregnancy is actually ultimately minimized in terms of its impact on the story.

While not every tonal downshift here is entirely fluid, this remains a smart, risky one-off, unconcerned with those (and there will be many) who can’t acquire its taste.

As the psychodrama of a lonely woman with a score to settle acquires seriousness it saps the misanthropic sense of mischief and madness, causing the movie to lose its way.

Lowe's attempts at getting into anti-heroine Ruth's head are largely unsuccessful, though her performance is sometimes effectively hysterical.

You have to stay with this psychological thriller, through the first two kills (about 20 minutes)... I so nearly turned off. However, after this point, the acting, story, characterisations, and direction get so much better and the film is actually worth watching, especially if you like dark humour. This is not a comedy but is much better than most comedies around at the moment. Alice Lowe, who wrote, directed, and starred in the lead role has done a splendid job of showing the bonds of one psychopathic mother as she talks and listens to her psychotic unborn child, in her womb.

Interesting black comedy that combines horror and some fantasy that ended up being an entertaining mix but not very outstanding, I'm not saying you will reject it, it's simply that it never transcends, nothing bad in it either, after all this is entertainment and that is what it gives. That ends up trying to encompass more than what it can it's true, you cannot blame it for being ambitious but you also have to know your our own limits.
