A suspense comedy as breezy and noncommittal as its title, this sophomore feature from writer-director Sophie Brooks is a deceptively low-fi affair, but it keeps a cheeky premise going for longer than it has any right to.

Whether you will enjoy "Oh, Hi!" or not depends on your expectations for this movie. Are you in the mood to watch a silly romantic black comedy? Well, chances are you'll like it. Did you come for an erotic drama with thriller undertones? You won't get that. If you adjust your expectations, you'll be able to have fun. I know I did. Just don't take everything so seriously. The movie does start to overstay its welcome around the one-hour mark, when it starts to drag a little bit, and Iris' moronic friends can get on your nerves with their stupid attitudes that serve the plot rather than anything else. Overall, I liked it. It's always nice to see Logan Lerman, especially if he's shirtless and cuffed to a bed. "Oh, Hi" reminded me of the better movie about romantic relationships that came out earlier this year, "Together". I kind of wished I was watching that instead. But I promise you, I still had fun with this indie chick flick.

Molly Gordon & Logan Lerman play a couple who drive to the country for a weekend getaway. Their seemingly burgeoning romance ends up with him chained to the bed facing her outrage at his lack of fidelity. This unusual situation works, thanks to the engaging duo and writer/director Sophie Brooks breezy, cheeky approach. Toss in the additional low-key comic style of Geraldine Viswanathan, John Reynolds and David Cross to add a bit more. While there is too much discussion about commitment and the whole endeavor seems a bit far-fetched, the film still manages to provide an unusual angle on modern romance.

While this send-up might not pass the scrutiny for a rewatch or cult classic, it’s at least good for one fun and unexpected go-round.

The opening of the movie has some perfectly timed visually-delivered laughs, like an early car scene involving an accidental failure to reverse, and the bottle-episode staginess of later scenes limits the visual invention. Still, by this point you’ve boarded the ride, and Oh, Hi! keeps you captive in a way that Iris only dreams of: by sheer force of Gordon’s personality.

Oh, Hi! is an ambitious, thought-provoking look at modern romance that starts with the terror of weekend getaways before dissecting the gender stereotypes that keep people from finding their happily-ever-after.

After its opening act, the film gets silly fast, with a frankly stupid witchcraft subplot and narrative turns that are telegraphed with audience-insulting obviousness.

As it adds extraneous characters, “Oh, Hi!” becomes so frustrating and unbelievable that I wanted to yell advice at the screen.

"Oh, Hi!" is that rare case of a movie that’s funny, engaging and interesting moment by moment, but everything else is wrong with it.

Oh, Hi! is a refreshingly unhinged take on modern romance — a darkly funny, emotionally tangled indie film that blurs the line between love and obsession. Director Sophie Brooks turns what could’ve been a typical rom-com into a chaotic character study, anchored by Molly Gordon’s raw, magnetic performance and Logan Lerman’s understated charm. Though uneven in tone, the film’s bold shifts and honest discomfort make it an oddly captivating watch — messy, heartfelt, and undeniably human.
