Naked Singularity

There's something off-kilter about it, in a good way. It has a confidence that might not be earned but is still enjoyable to see. It's tapping into something true and knows it.

The brisk pacing and capable cast still can't quite mask a certain routine feel in a movie without much heart.

Not even an impending apocalypse adds much in the way of urgency. Still, Boyega is very credible and at 29 he’s beginning to look like a leading man with real gravitational pull. Likely he’ll file this on his CV under misfire.

Even Spiderverse-savvy Spiderman might consider this singularly confusing, a botched effort to say something scientific-sound and profound in a story that’s basically a lawyer-novelist riffing on “The French Connection,” and doing it badly.

Naked Singularity isn’t a typical courtroom drama. It’s a heist flick, a sci-fi romp, and a message film all rolled into one. And it’s a pretty terrible example of all three genres.

The concept might have worked well on paper. But on screen, at least how Chase Palmer has directed and co-scripted it, those clashing elements exert weak gravitational pull.

The uniquely underwhelming sci-fi lawyer drama Naked Singularity is a weird mashup of ill-fitting genre tropes and quarter-cooked ideas about social justice and alternate realities.

(Mauro Lanari) Ridley Scott produces the film adaptation of the book "A Naked Singularity" (Sergio De La Pava, 2008), Chase Palmer's first feature that has the merit of clarifying, as never before in a movie, the dichotomy founding the philosophy of the time: Voltaire against Leibniz, the "Candide" (1759) against the "Theodicy" (1710). "If this is the best of possible worlds, what then are the others?". The paradigm shift, the breaking of the gnoseontological scheme, takes place through science (fiction): transcending legal laws thanks to physical and cosmological possibilities, the injustice of the system with reptilians and the "Gravitation" by Misner, Thorne and Wheeler (1973). Confused? Why shouldn't it be? Still no one has shown that the problem is solvable, but at least here we do not get bogged down in directors like Richard Curtis, who allows himself to provide a haughtily defeatist answer, or like Nolan, who stages negentropy in an rambling spy-movie. Palmer's real flaws are a very bad photography and, together with De La Pava, "the clumsy jumble of tones and ideas" (RT). Personally I add the lack of a different and complementary point of view: the female one like the protagonist Laura of "Press Play" (Björkman 2022).

Perhaps John Boyega has in mind to star in movies that offer him a challenge as an actor, and in this case I can't really say bad things about his work, however, I can't help wondering what the hell went through his head when reading the script and believing this was something good. Also, I understand this was adapted from a book. I can't say anything about the source material, because I don't know anything about it, however, Naked Singularity is only 90 minutes long, and from what I read, the book is about 700 pages long. Certainly something was lost along the way.

No normal person watches a film starring a racist. A no-talent blaming everyone for his acting disability. I don't know how such a racist can be employed.
