The ending is phenomenally silly, the Die Hard references glaring (look out for the Rolex), and the entire project is perfectly pitched in that elusive sweet spot where achingly familiar formula can briefly satisfy once again.

In the end, Mutiny is mindless fun on a freighter. It stands out for its unique location and will land in the top half of the Statham action-film rankings.

Statham and Wallis give good performances and the heroes avoid the stupid mistakes that make movies like this less forgivable. As far as summer fare goes, this is one of the more enjoyable actioners. It’s a fun time-waster; that is, if you’re in the mood for what it’s selling.

To paraphrase Nicole Kidman, we come here for bone-snapping. And we get it here in abundance.

Mutiny was directed by Jean-François Richet, who made the pretty good Gerard Butler movie Plane, and here, once again, he shows a flair for staging extreme misanthropic violence with a human touch.

Although Mutiny isn't enough of a standout action flick to recommend to everyone, if you're a Jason Statham fan, it's an essential watch. The movie works as a Statham vehicle so well that it actually justifies the marketing campaign's half-serious memes of reclassifying Statham's body of work as its own genre.

The drum-tight, immensely satisfying new Statham film, Mutiny, is a cut above.

Mutiny won’t win any awards and it certainly won’t be the best action flick devotees of the genre see this year (they may well see a better one on a streaming platform this week), but at 95 minutes it doesn’t outstay its welcome, and is curiously capable of still raising a smile. Maybe not from Jason, though; that’s never been his thing.

Perhaps there’s something slightly more charming about the existence of a sturdy and unpretentious formula-first actioner like Mutiny just because it’s that much less common to see a film like this actually reach the big screen in 2026. It also helps that by this stage Statham knows how to go through the motions but doesn’t seem to sleepwalk through them just yet.

Knowing that Statham can do more than this, that he’s capable of being incredibly funny, doesn’t make what he’s doing in a very narrow range onscreen here any less effective. He’s our journeyman hero, turning up reliably each year when people are in need of an action film that’s just good enough, always ready to do the work.
