Minions: The Rise of Gru

The fast-paced, vaudevillian-style humor keeps us laughing despite the fact that we never really have any clue what any of the Minions themselves are saying. This movie affords itself more surface-level moments with lesser-developed villains because of the relationships we're immediately invested in between Gru and his Minions.

Even if you can’t stand the Minions (who are once again voiced in “Minionese” by Pierre Coffin), you might find this one tolerable. Especially if you’re old enough to get the 1976 jokes yet feel young enough to find bemusement in all the goofy slapstick.

Six months into 2022, it’s the funniest film Hollywood has produced thus far. Audiences know what to expect, and Illumination delivers, offering another feel-good dose of bad behavior.

This Minions prequel would have to go some to make it as flimsy, but Steve Carell is pricelessly funny doing the voice of a pre-teen wannabe villain wrangling an army of goggle-wearing little buggers and you could do worse in a search for animated family fun

Perhaps it’s a relief that the film does not, as is a trope in recent films, end in Gru’s temporary redemption, but at least that would be a conclusion of some sort. Instead, we’re left with entertaining but toothless villain-lair-building.

As lackluster as this scattered-brained saga is, the animation team of “The Rise of Gru” does excel at constantly reminding us that we are in the 70s via its production design.

At 88 minutes, Minions: The Rise of Gru struggles to find enough story to encompass its run time, ending up feeling substantially longer as a result.

This movie was a little bit fantastic but it’s needs more gooder or funny scenes

Minions: The Rise of Gru is a light 6/10 for me. It has a few funny moments and the usual Minions chaos, but there’s not much to hold onto once it’s over. Gru as a kid is cute, the villains are over-the-top, and the movie moves fast enough to keep you entertained, but it doesn’t offer anything new. It’s a simple, goofy watch — fun for the moment, but nothing memorable.

Very cute, but another instance of a movie studio taking a successful franchise and stuffing politics into a sequel hoping people will tolerate it. The first Minions move seems like that it is going that direction, only to have the most awesome supervillain in the world, who is a woman, get her butt kicked by a tiny male child at the end. Pretty much the same punchline is at the end of this movie, but apparently they had to stuff wokeness into the rest of the film to compensate. So both the end AND the beginning of the last sentence are reasons why this movie is 'no good' on the whole.

It's very fun at points but none of the characters are interesting and the story is bland.
