Stylistically this movie succeeds. It captures the dark and desolate wintry Noir vibe and visualization of the game perfectly. The world feels real. However the storyline and characters are nonsensical. I think it is a fine homage to a great game, but as a movie it is missing the necessary components to make it “good.” I feel only a fan of the game could appreciate it.

its so unexpected and confusing, i didnt know max payne freaking shooting demons when the game isnt even about demons, also worst part the legend mark was in this **** movie

The video game roots don't really help or hinder this movie. It's a solid action thriller in it's own right. Yes I was entertained.

Poor casting, poor story, poor acting. This movie feels like it goes out of its way to upset Max Payne fans.

A revenge movie full of drugs, guns and shadowy demonic monsters should be a home run, right? **** this one. It's more of an softly hit ground ball to the first baseman for an easy out. Heavy changes from the video game has me asking "Why?" more than I should be. For a game that really popularized bullet time in video games, there really isn't a whole lot of it in this movie. There was a whole scene of shooting a lot of guns and there was some slow-mo but nothing you'd consider "bullet time". But when it does happen, it's kinda cool visually, albeit too short. And there really isn't a whole lot of action either. It's definitely more on the "solving a mystery by finding clues and interrogating people" spectrum. We really don't know why Max is seeking revenge until about halfway through the film from a flashback scene. They spend a little too much time on the wings and building up a lame villain. ¾ of the movie makes him out to be a total badass, just for him to get shot 2 minutes into the fight with Max by the actual main villain. The ending was pretty much the peak with what little action there was. The biggest takeaway I have from this movie is that Beau Bridges, Jeff Bridges and Lloyd Bridges are all related. How did I never realize that before!? And there's an end credits scene for a potential sequel that's totally going to happen, right??

I've never played the games, but I guess the story has nothing to do with it other than the name, having said that I quite liked the movie if what you want to see is an action revenge thriller the movie has cinematography that I think is very cool and the ending is quite exciting

Old memories have been revived. When I was a kid, I used to play the first version of this movie game on PC. I used to play the game, so I watched this movie. Mark Wahlberg is a great actor. Mila Kunis and Donal Logue are great actors in this movie.

This movie is good, it's a simple and beautiful story that is easy to understand. The music is perfect. The event turned out to be very interesting

Beautiful. It looked fantastic. The effects were amazing, the camerawork stunning, it looked good. It was over-the-top but then that is how it is nowadays. Sounded great. Couldn't fault the sound. Good use of the surround, nice spot effects, great bass here and there. It was good solid sound. The story was badly done. I remember the game being great but that was a good few years ago. This movie seemed to change a few things and took away a lot of the noir charm. Some of the story in this movie didn't really make sense either. There was really poor characterisation too. Basically it was a horribly executed and written story. A total shame on the good memory of the game. Great picture and sound cannot excuse a poor excuse for a story.

This movie makes no sense; it’s clearly created by someone who has never played or seen the game before and instead got some weird ‘cheat sheet’ of a couple important names and locations but never anything story-related. Due to this, any fans of the game will be wondering what this movie has to do with Max Payne, while at the same time, someone who has never played the game will have absolutely no idea what’s happening in this movie. In essence, this movie is absolutely plotless until about halfway through when the drug, Valkyr, appears. And while we’re on the subject of Valkyr, the effects of it are nothing like they should be. I mean when someone takes this drug in the movie, they go on some weird acid trip where they suddenly see demons flying at them, terrifying them, and killing them. And the drug demons do actually kill them! Who would ever take this drug? It’s all negative effects to the user. I can’t decide if the best part of this movie was when everyone in SWAT was gonna get a medal for their incompetence or when Max took the drug and immediately started roaring and having his injuries healed. The vote is still out. I saw a piece of trivia that said Mark Wahlberg refused to play the game before getting into the role because “he did not want to get addicted”. And that kind of crazy makes a lot of sense for how bad a job he did playing Max. As movie Max said “I don’t know what heaven’s like..” but I’m sure the ending of this movie is pretty close.

This movie is about nice man with sad story about his family. But he is strong and will fight with his enemies. With videogame isnt the same storyline, but nice.

A stylish, neo-noir thriller that comes off as Sin City-lite. Where Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's comic book adaptation received praise for the originality of its stories (as well as the visuals) however, this offers a by-the-numbers revenge plot. Despite all of its references to Norse mythology, its twists and turns remain predictable throughout. In fact, the only unique thing they bring to the table are the bizarre hallucinations the characters have of demonized valkyries. Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the games this is based on outside of the first one's surprisingly incredible GBA port, but I'm pretty sure there weren't any supernatural creatures in them, imagined or not. Even if there were, it doesn't change the fact that they feel wildly out of place in this movie. They do at least provide something interesting to look at though. Of course, there is also plenty of bombastic blockbuster action. It's serviceable, but at the same time these slow motion shootouts have got nothing on a John Woo flick. Probably serving as the best example of how Max Payne borrows competently enough from other, better films to be watchable in a turn-your-brain-off sort of way without ever managing to be truly exciting. As a matter of fact, aside from being woefully miscast with Mark Wahlberg giving a performance with literally all the acting range and emotional expressiveness of an actual block of wood and Mila Kunis being the poorest excuse for a Russian gangster I have ever seen, the real problem with this movie is that it's entirely forgettable. Perhaps not the worst complaint one could direct at this, but it's still indicative of a rather fatal flaw. After all, as adequate as it may be, why should you watch this when there are plenty of other options out there doing the same thing in a more enjoyable manner?

Not as bad as advertised but certainly not good. The plot of the film is your basic run of the mill action-revenge story and does little to distinguish itself from being otherwise. Mark Wahlberg and company do solid jobs but the film doesn't offer opportunities for them to show their chops. All in all, for being a video game movie, it's not the worst I've ever seen but it could have been alot better

This is a review/angry rant. Spoilers ahead but if you are a fan of the games then just skip this trash. Firs of all, out of all the actors in Hollywood to play Jim Bravura, you got Ludacris? ****ing Ludacris? Honestly after I saw that I gave up. Why not just hire Michael Cera to play Max and Anna Faris as Mona? I like Mark Wahlberg but his portrayal of Max was really bland and boring. He didn't have any of those qualities that made Max such a complex character in the games. And why did they make so many unnecessary changes? Why does Valkyr all of a sudden make these demon bird things appear? It has nothing to do with the game as it was never mentioned. Why is BB all of a sudden the main **** villain when he played such a bit part in the game? Why is Nicole Horne not the main villain like in the game? Max is never undercover in the film, no Vinnie Gognitti, no mention of the Punchinello's and then of course no Vladimir Lem. Honestly there are waaaaaayyy to many stupid changes and this movie is way to ****ing PG. The games are some of the most well written, darkest and creepiest piece of media I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. This film sadly makes the game seem like the blandest detective/revenge film that you'd see on TV at 4 a.m. on some random channel. It's bad enough that it takes almost an hour for any action of note in the film plus the bullet time sequence was pathetic as well. Video game movies have never worked and they probably never will but if you're going to make them, STOP MAKING SO MANY ****ing CHANGES AND PISSING OFF THE LOYAL FANS OF THE GAMES.

"Max Payne" just goes to prove what movie critics have been saying for years. Yes, video game based movies do indeed ****. Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne is very bland and boring. The dialogue is also is atrocious. One example is at the very beginning when someone who works in the cold case unit asks if Max Payne wants a beer after work. Wahlberg just completely ignores him. Why is there no interaction between these two characters? Who knows. Action sequences aren't horrible, but I'm sure you can find better action in a whole bunch of other movies. The ending **** also. Not worth your time.

I expect it to be equally beautiful as the game. Too bad ... The movie could have been much better if it got the same story as in the original game ..

I saw the movie before I learned about the video game. The Movie took a different spin that was less effective than the video game. Then again, I am not sure they've made any movies based on video games that were a real success. That being said, I still think this one falls on the higher end of those films. Although it lacked the grit and murky attitude the video game had, the story structure and dialogue could have been much worse. Lets be grateful. Marc W. was an interesting pick as Max Payne, and I think he delivered something with substance. Could a different actor do better, possibly a few, I thought he lacked that inner strife and just hollow feel that drives Max, I don't feel like Max is a mess and doesn't care and wants to die because he has nothing but revenge on his mind. I feel like that still mostly could be the director's and story's fault. Max Payne should have had a more epic intro than "leave that man alone". I also think Mila Kunis was an attention cast rather than a talent cast, not to mention Luda. Her character lacked the hate and aggression needed to believe she was a mafia **** her strength. This movie could have been great. Revenge stories always have potential, the flaws are notable but I think this one managed to crutch along and not be a failure. Just not much more than that.

Verdict: Video Game Action success? Story: Having never played the games or even knowing anything about the games I could really see this fresh as an action fan. I was expecting some form of supernatural side to the story but I was wrong. It is just a revenge thriller that has lots of action and very little dialogue. Most of the support characters have very little development and are each only used to pass on a small part of the story. In the end as a standalone action film it is switch the mind of acceptable. (6/10) Actor Review: Mark Wahlberg – Max Payne the determined cop who wants to truth who ends up getting caught up in something bigger than he could have ever imagined. Solid from Mark but the fans of the games will dislike what he does to the character. (7/10) max Actor Review: Mila Kunis – Mona from the more underworld side of the city she ends up teaming up with Max to take down the people responsible for the death of their loved ones. I think this was a bit too early in her career, she looks a little bit out of place, and maybe she could return for a sequel and use what she has learned. (4/10) mila Actor Review: Beau Bridges – BB Hensley friend of Max who was also good friends with his wife, he tries to help but ultimately is the guy responsible for everything that has driven Max. Good but nothing special performance. (6/10) Actor Review: Ludacris – Jim the internal affairs officer trying to figure out what the corruption in the Police could change how they look at crimes being committed in the town. Another guy who was in a role that is hard to believe too early in his acting career, he tries but it just doesn’t quite some off for him. (5/10) ludicrus Actor Review: Chris O’Donnell – Jason a former work colleague of Max’s wife, knows more than he is letting on. Good supporting role that is good use for information only. (5/10) Actor Review: Donal Logue – Alex ex-partner who tries to reconnect after discovering a new clue about Max’s wife’s murder. Only a small role but the look of a desperate friend works well. (6/10) Actor Review: Amaury Nolasco – Jack a man that spends a lot of time watching what is going on with Max and Mona, but he does have a motive, but we never know what he final motive is. Good supporting role used well to create a target for Max. (6/10) amruay Director Review: John Moore – Simple direction used to create plenty of over the top action for the more casual fan to enjoy. (6/10) Action: Plenty of gun fights throughout, I really don’t know how many bullets they must have used. (9/10) Crime: Simple crime aspects used nothing truly original though. (6/10) Thriller: Tries to pull of some thrills but doesn’t really succeed. (6/10) Special Effects: Good special effects for the hallucination scenes and gun battles. (9/10) Believability: No (0/10) Chances of Tears: No (0/10) Settings: Dark settings used to create a very dark world similar to the story they are in. (8/10) Suggestion: This is really one to try I can’t say it is very original and like most video game films isn’t the most popular compared to the games. (Try It) Best Part: Gun rights. I love the game series. Obviously the game is much better. But I thought the movie was pretty decent. Had a good story, and dark tone that we all know and love. Could've used more action sure. And the supporting characters needed more of a personality. But Mark Whalberg did a fine job.

Max Payne the film falls short of the Max Payne game series. John Moore takes the concept of the game it's story line and creates something basic. The fans of Max Payne were a bit disappointed at the films depute. Unfortunately the story and comics in the first game were so impressive for that time and made such a huge impact in the gaming industry and most importantly in the player's, or better gamers minds. Therefore it would be very hard to make a movie with a similar impact and create a Max Payne as Bad ass as you could possibly make it in the game. I mean you as a player. It is a shame, the film could have done more justice to the Max Payne novelty. Maybe future remakes will be taken into accord although I know the reason they are not at the moment. The directors saw how hard it was to make an actual impression on the fans. It is a shame really, Mark Walkberg is a decent actor but unfortunately he did not make a true impact in this film. I would suggest a more sickening looking kind a character. But hey, we cannot really get exactly what we want can we? Well.. sometimes we can. Film-makers have shows us before and will do so again..

Mark Wahlberg plays popular game hero Max Payne, a cop who sets out to find the man who killed his wife and child, while doing so he uncovers a potential conspiracy that could lead him to the killer. While Max Payne boasts a great tone, atmosphere and great cinematography, the overall film wasn't really all that great, the acting was tough to judge, there were some good performances but the actors seem like they didn't have much to work with, the action scenes are minimal, and was just a ton of shooting and they weren't all that exciting, however if you are interested in this film, you can watch it, but I feel that there are better options. Without comparing it to the game, I felt they could have done more to make it a bit more interesting and exciting, and possibly add more to Max Payne's back story and they could've been more inventive with the action scenes instead of making people just shoot at each other. Otherwise, its a good concept and is well shot, but the execution needed a little more work.

"Payne-ful" to watch, unwatchable if you're a fan of the videogames. I am a HUGE fan of the games, and near the beginning a scene starts to shape up like a part of the videogame. I get a little giddy...then I sit through an hour and fifteen more minutes of nonsense, insanity, not plot, terrible acting, and even mediocre action. Mark Wahlberg as the title character was the stereotypical east coast detective. You could have plugged one of 50 actors into the role and gotten the same thing. As a stand alone film, it's really bad. As something with even a semblance of "inspiration" from the video games, it's even worse. Avoid this. If it's free turn it down, if it costs money, punch somebody in the face. One of the ten worst movies I've ever **** I've seen Glitter.

It's pretty entertaining in some point, but even then it's only on a superficial level. "Max Payne" is a pretty lame attempt at recreating what the games did so well.

I really wanted to like this movie. Unfortunately, the movie seems to chug at a very slow pace and the action scenes are way too far and few between. Even the shootdodge that Marky Mark does in the movie doesn't even look that proper. However, even without all the action, the movie does stay very true to form to the video games, as it is as dark as the games is.

Worst Video game adaption i've ever seen. I'm a great fan of Max Payne Video game series and expected the movie will be thrilling too. it's cheesy,boring,horrible and atrocious.Even Mark Wahlberg didn't left any effect.Mila Kunis looked like doing a cameo. Writer messed up everything in the script. So-known slow motion sequences are way too short as compared to game. I'm very disappointed. May be it will please the non-gamers a bit but for Game fans ,it's just a waste of time.

Definitely not worth watching if you are a fan of the videogame Max Payne. Horrible movie that is nowhere near the original game. Though i give 2 for the effort. -the-epikninja

If John Woo directed this movie, there would be more action scenes than ever and the movie would have been longer. The plot in this movie does not match with the one in the original Max Payne game which winds up to be a technical flaw. An enemy as an angel with wings? That did not exist in that game.

I loved Max Payne (video game) so there's a film! I watch the trailer and it doesn't really look like the game I didn't know what to expect, so I watch it and the action scenes are nice but everything else ****. The best part is, none of it makes sense, its nothing like the game, what about the train station scene (Roscoe street station) the thugs just walk right in and want his watch. Isn't he supposed to kill them whilst they wait for the train? They've all mixed it up and the characters have a terrible roll. They even chose the wrong character that they kill in the ending. Nope, NOT Nicole Horn, someone else! I mean, how can they choose the wrong character! Skip this film, its not worth the time.
