Not quite a comedy, not really a drama, Mad Dog and Glory throws your equilibrium but keeps your interest high. [5 Mar 1993, p.C3]

Mad Dog and Glory is one of the few recent movies where it helps to pay close attention. Some of the best moments come quietly and subtly, in a nuance of dialogue or a choice of timing. The movie is very funny, but it's not broad humor, it's humor born of personality quirks and the style of the performances.

The film plays out as a fun comedy-crime romp with the two leads playing against type: Deniro as an impish by-the-books police officer, Murray as a gangster comic. All the performances are incredible from the impeccable cast, from top to bottom. The dialogue is also well-written, with each character breathing a life of their own. "Different strokes for different folks" has got to be one of my favorites, delivered by the amazing Caruso. Overall, if you could look past the minor flaws in somewhat abrupt tonal shifts and pacing, you'll truly enjoy this wonderful piece of cinema from the early 90s.

I liked this film a lot since my first viewing. It's extremely weird, but that's it's charm. By being so weird and bizarre it actually feels more real than most movies. Life isn't clean-cut or perfect. Life can be very awkward, and things can be dark. The people you meet, the relationships you have with them, tend to just happen, and happen in ways you don't plan or expect. Everything about this film is slightly offbeat, making decisions that aren't necessarily smart. The cast is fantastic, the tone is great, the film is pretty slow, and strange, both too bizarre to be realistic, but bizarre enough to be somewhat real. It's not a perfect film, it can be a bit cheesy at times, and it's certainly not for everyone. It's even fairly shallow. But to capture the comedy of life, finding the humour of the smaller and stranger things. It does a great job.

Mad Dog and Glory, thankfully, finds the director in remarkable form, crafting an engrossing new film out of what might have been, in less competent hands, simply another Hollywood formula movie.

Mad Dog and Glory also seems like two movies at once, only in this case the split comes off like a case of Siamese twins. Actually, it's girls on one side and boys on the other, and the boys get all the breaks. [4 Mar 1993, p.A12]

Despite Thurman's unlikely role, she's rather appealing with De Niro, but the De Niro-Murray chemistry isn't convincing. Murray, a breeze in Groundhog Day, seems tensed up here; the film, long on the shelf and with long-shot cult potential, brings no discredit upon its makers, but no glory either. [5 Mar 1993, p.5D]

The movie is a little gimpy. But Murray's molto impressive. He drops his voice half an octave; he walks like a golem tailored by Armani; he puts his silky style in the service of menace. It's a whole nother dimension to him. [8 March 1993]

Taken as a whole, Mad Dog and Glory is a disappointingly mixed bag. What's on the screen is passably diverting, but I often felt as if I was seeing only half the movie. With this intriguing premise and cast, the film should have offered more complete entertainment.

It's a good film to watch during your lunch. Predictable but the performance of Robert De Niro & Bill Murray attract you to film until the end.

The film can't decide what it is. A romantic film? Thriller ? Black comedy? Unfortunately the film is non of these and it is rather dull. They could have mad a better film with this great cast.

A cop who'd rather be an artist. A mobster who'd rather be a comic. And a woman who'd rather be anywhere but between them.
