The documentary ends up both a delightful ’90s time capsule and a sharp analysis of the social and cultural forces that shaped Morissette’s career—for better and worse.

Jagged rides the wave of that excitement, but avoids opportunities to explore deeper below the surface.

Alison Klayman’s documentary about the making of Jagged Little Pill should be as raw as its source material, but plays it incredibly safe instead.

If you’re looking for a heartwarming, affirming doc about how yes, you’re right to love Alanis Morissette, it’ll probably work for you. But don’t expect to learn anything new, or be wowed by its presentation.

Not sure why I was expecting more, but it this is as about as by-the-numbers as music docs get, just a bunch of talking heads waxing rhapsodic. It's only really saved by the strength of the music it chronicles.
