Jackie, the English-language debut from the Chilean director Pablo Larraín, shows you the past in a hall of shattered mirrors – fractured and unsettling, with every surface sharp enough to draw blood.

Powered by a transfixing Portman, Larrain's film – one of the year's best – is appropriately hard to pin down and impossible to forget.

Jackie has a nightmare vibe to it that’s palpable and unsettling, and Portman’s performance as the widowed first lady is a tour de force of conflicting emotions brought on by the impossibly ghastly reality bookending that sunny day in Dallas.

The title character never emerges from the iconic shell she inhabits to become a fully fleshed-out individual and the filmmakers are perhaps too reverential to make her seem real. Like Camelot, she’s a mythic figure and Jackie doesn’t do enough to humanize her.

It is a mess of a film, botched but also misconceived, with a central performance by Natalie Portman that evokes nothing about Jackie Kennedy, beyond the stylish clothes and the secret smoking.

This is the best performance of Natalie Portman to date. The movie is only 100 minutes long and it doesn´t need more time to get inside us. Jackie is very well directed by pablo larrain. This is not totally a biopic, they used a lot of imagination to do this movie, if i didn´t investigate about the movie and figure this i could actually believed that all of this happened, exactly as they told us.

This film is very maudlin - the titular character sounds quite ghostly and it has somewhat of an ethereal feel to it. Of course its all about a true story, a very sad story and I can't say it wasn't a complete tragedy but the film didn't especially appeal to me as it seemed that things were somehow just a bit too overly forced in my opinion. I feel the main culprit in this was the music, the sombre music felt a bit too forced. I can only imagine the pain that Mrs Kennedy must have felt and been left with for a long time after that horrendous shooting but it felt somehow slightly tacky the way that the music is so loudly over-present, if anything. I did feel that Natalie Portman gave a reasonably good performance as Jackie - she does quite well at having a glassy look, which is quite understandable. There was a distinct feeling, an atmosphere, of numbness, again quite understandably so. I still felt that there was something missing but I honestly can't say what that is. It was an ok watch, with some interesting pieces of dialogue and the like but I wouldn't say its especially good or great. Its quite an eery watch but I'm not especially sure I learnt a great deal from it and I wouldn't say its entirely memorable either.

Natalie Portman is great as always but the film feels like it is missing something.

My God what a dull, morbid and depressing film. We were hoping that this would be about her life, how she met and married JFK, their relationship, and maybe they would have the assassination in the last 15 minutes. Instead, it is set straight after the assassination. Just a bleak, miserable film. Turned it off after an ~hour. Maybe, if you don't mind that you can see some value here, but not for me and my Mum. The cinematography is excellent, with a 4:3 aspect ratio and footage that could have been taken straight from the time period. The sets and costumes are also excellent, but bear in mind this is only the 60s, it's not the 1600s. The sound mixing is atrocious. The music is way louder than the dialogue and I can barely hear Natalie speaking in her soft breathy voice. The music sounds more like a Hitchcock suspense thriller. What a bizarre choice. Natalie is fine as Jackie. I'm not familiar with Jackie so I can't really judge but she seems solid to me. Decent performances all round.

Seriously ? This film is so boring ! nothing concrete happens and i'm very disappointed. The pictures are beautiful but for too long there is nothing happening ! We sympathize with the main character but the film revolves around : nothing! nothing happens. She just wonders how to do her husband's funeral, that's all. So disappointed ... Don't waste your time.
