Sandler, like him or not, is a master at bringing ‘90s heart and sentiment to his dumb schtick, and he’s disarmingly quiet and warm here. And his best jokes have nothing to do with Halloween.

The jokes aren’t often Sandler’s best material but Hubie Halloween is as sweet and easily digestible as a Milky Way.

The humor being volleyed around in Hubie Halloween isn’t malicious; Sandler, as Hubie, is almost always the butt of the joke, and the gags are mostly gross-outs rather than jabs at any specific people. Hubie Halloween may not be Uncut Gems, but it excels at being what it is: a comedy that’s easy to watch, and easy to forget about.

Hubie Halloween gets by on the strength of its cameos and sight gags.

A feel-good, all-star monster mash with a low-key smackdown on bullying and a major focus on being as goofy as possible.

Silly, overstuffed and as sweet as anything Adam Sandler has done.

Somehow, delivered via the bizarre antics of Adam Sandler, who was once one of our most wonderfully corrosive comic personas, it has a certain power.

There is something half-satisfying and pacifying about Hubie Halloween. In true content-blurring Netflix fashion, Sandler has essentially made a likable children’s movie to babysit undemanding adults.

Compared to a lot of other Adam Sandler movies, Hubie Halloween is watchable without being actually very good.

Along the way, audiences are treated to the standard Sandler shenanigans, but more inspired and less lazy than usual.
