Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is best understood as a basket of jokes and non sequiturs that simply need some kind of framework to keep things semi-coherent. That’s a compliment, of course, as these are very, very funny jokes.

For about a day after I watched Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, I was dismissive of its Airplane (but not quite as good) comedic styling and the over-the-top acting, which felt like it was trying to wear me down. And yet by day two I was telling family and friends about some of the oddball moments of humour that made no logical sense but also made me laugh.

My usual problem with capers is they almost always climax with a tedious chase sequence. Thankfully, Wain undermines the formula, simply snatching clever ideas as they flit past.

It is all delightfully nonsensical stuff, but conceived and executed with neurosurgeon-level care.

As the world continues fermenting its vile culture, the gang behind The State and Wet Hot American Summer is back to save you from the merciless onslaught of bad news. At least for 90 minutes.

Both goofy and edgy, the film may not land every punchline, but it satisfies in visceral, pleasurable ways that a more sophisticated comedy could not.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is a flagrant concoction that wants to do nothing more than make you laugh, and at that it succeeds. Yet in its way, there’s a bit of a vision to it.

Despite some thin spots, “Gail Daughtry” is a comic highlight of the summer.

That lack of focus means it doesn’t quite fire on all cylinders like Wain’s prior pictures, but when the bone-dumb gags fly this gleefully (and frequently), it’s hard to care overmuch.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is as unhinged as the name implies, and it’s exactly what we’d want from Wain and Marino. These two have proven that their brand of comedy hasn’t gotten old over the decades, and thank goodness they’re back making the most insane movie comedies out there.
